Baby down with chicken pox

Baby's got chicken pox…and we aren't talking about a child here, although Benaf Dadachanji's barely out of her teens herself. Benaf, who plays the bubbly polio stricken Baby in Star Plus' Ba,Bahoo aur Baby has been down with chicken pox and is keeping unwell
for two weeks now.
The 18 year old says she contracted the virus from her brother and has been bedridden since 23 January and has another week left for recovery, according to her doctors.

"My brother got chicken pox and when he started recovering, I got it. I have stopped shooting as I cannot apply make up. And my face is the worst affected. It was very painful initially, but now the scabs are falling off while the marks are still left. I am dying to wash my hair and have a soap bath as I am only allowed to use neem water. And I am literally sitting on neem leaves throughout the day," giggles the pretty Benaf, who keeps herself busy these days watching loads of movies and English soaps Orange County besides spending time with her friends who come to visit her.

Benaf, who is studying for her B Com degree through correspondence, spends 15 days shooting for Ba,Bahoo aur Baby (and she says she is happy doing just one show at a time) and the rest of the days, prefers to chill out with her family and friends .
Benaf was also seen in Hello Dollie,Remix,Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Here's hoping the pretty Baby is back at the BBB sets soon.

Hansaben bani Gunvanti
After the exit of Instant Khichdi in October, Supriya Pathak who played Hansaben in this Star One serial kept away from the small screen. Her character in this weekly, about a dysfunctional Gujarati family which hits the Rs 100 crore jackpot with an oil mine in their backyard, was unique in its mannerisms.

She was the most unconventional in the show's Parekh household who even used the family's private aircraft to dry papads. She also has a son Ruhaan, who is younger to Sanah. However Instant Khichdi producer Jamnadas Majethia, better known as JD, in the telly world, has managed to convince her to be back on television.

She now features in his Star Plus weekend show, Baa Bahoo aur Baby. "We had approached her earlier to play the role of Baa but she did not want to commit herself for long spells of shoots at that time. Now when we were developing a track with a new character, we again thought of her," explains JD. In Baa Bahoo aur Baby, Pathak plays a "phoren-returned Gujarati woman" called Gunvanti. "Obviously when people will see me they will remember Hansaben.

But as Gunvanti in Baa Bahoo aur Baby, my look and gestures are extremely distinct," explains Pathak. "I will be seen in salwar kurtas and sweaters. It is a slightly older character who still clings on to the past," says Pathak. Adds JD, "Gunvanti is Baa's bhabhi. She owes the place where Baa and her family live. She enters the household as the maami who has returned from abroad.

We've shown her as a typical NRI, she carries off her salwar suits along with her sneakers and scarves. As her character of Gunvanti is also Gujarati, there is that tinge to her but she it is different from Hansaben." Baa Bahoo aur Baby is produced by JD, along with Aatish Kapadia, the names behind serials like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi (both Star One) and Batliwalla House No 43, which are now Kudkudiya House No 43 (Sony).

The cast includes Sarita Joshi as Baa, Rajeev Mehta (Praful of Instant Khichdi), Rajesh Kumar (Roshesh of Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai), Devan Bhojani, Lubna Salim, Vaishali Thakker, Suchita Trivedi, Benaf Dadachanji, Kamalika Guha Thakurta and Gautam Rode. As for the return of Instant Khichdi, JD says, "That will take some time. We are looking at doing another show for Star prior to Khichdi and one aspect of it is certain - it will not have a Gujarati backdrop," he informs.

Kid speak!

Deven Bhojani's act as the autistic Gattu in Star Plus' Ba Bahoo aur Baby has quite a fan following amongst kids! But the actor was caught completely off gaurd with the reaction that he got for one particular scene.
The scene in question showed Gattu going to a vendor to buy pav bhaji for himself...but he couldn't get it because he had no money!
This moved his young fans to such an extent that they started saving money to pay for his lunch. There was a day not so long ago when the actor was given some money that the kids had saved up from their pocket money! But the actor was mighty surprised when his five year old daughter too reacted in a similar fashion.
"Just as I was leaving for the shoot the next day (the day after the episode was aired) my daughter called out from the terrace and asked me if was carrying my wallet, worried that I might again be deprived of lunch!" laughed Deven.

That's the way kids are...they say it as it is!

Hats Off to produce show based on Aatish Kapadia's novel

Hats Off production is all set to produce a play based on writer cum producer Aatish Kapadia's novel, Resham Dankh.

Aatish Kapadia: a master craftsman

The show will be a social thriller that will be on air on either of the Star channels (sources indicate that it could be Star One). The novel was co written by Kapadia two years ago and will soon see a version on the telly.

"It's a very different kind of a story and it's interesting. We haven't done a show like this before so it will be a nice change. It has a finite end and will not go on for ever," says Kapadia, refusing to divulge any details.

"It's not a run of the mill thriller. It happens within a family...and that's the beauty of the show. At the end people will be shocked," says JD.

This is not the first time that Kapadia's works have been adapted by the visual medium. The story of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer, Aankhen is adapted from Kapadia's Gujarati play, Andhla Pato (the Gujarati equivalent of Blindman's Bluff), first staged in 1992. Waqt is also based on the stupendously successful Gujarati play, Vhala Fari Malishu Aavjo, penned by Kapadia.

Baa, Bahu, and fake creepers

Srabanti Chakrabarti | March 24, 2006 15:34 IST

The road to Swati Studio in Mumbai's suburban Goregaon did not give me good vibes on a hot and sultry March afternoon. A 10-minute walk from the railway station leads you to the studio, all set to shoot the 100th episode of Baa, Bahu Aur Baby -- the popular weekend television serial on Star Plus.

Produced by Hats Off production, the story is set against the backdrop of Saurashtra. Like all other serials from their stable, this too has its own colour -- very much evident from the sets -- which immediately transports you to old Gujarat.

The moment you enter the sets, you are greeted by a wall full of creepers and algae. But just when you want to complain about the cleanliness and hygiene, you realise that it is a plastic model. Full marks to set designer Jayant Deshmukh for creating such a realistic set.

More on rediff.com!

Being Cyrus: Unique

Films that created stars

Aussies to get some bhangra rap

The amount of money and effort that had gone into making this set was quite evident. The lead cast of the serial was yet to arrive, we were informed, and it will be almost sundown before the shooting starts.

As I walk around the sets, I come to a house with a small balcony and a swing in it. "Did you notice the small designer tiles in the balcony? They are real and we had to spend a lot of money on them. We wanted to create a realistic look," explained Jamna Das (also known as JD), the serial's producer a partner of Hats Off Productions.

The swing, throughout the duration of my visit, was occupied by the second partner of Hats Off and the brain behind the scripts of many popular serials -- including this one – Atish Kapadia.

"This (the swing) has become an addiction of sorts for me," he smiled. "Whenever I am here, I spend most of my time on the swing."

But before he could lounge on the swing longer, Sucheta Trivedi (who plays Meenakshi in the serial) came up: "Your time's up. Now it's my turn!"

There's no doubt the team is used to fun on the sets.

The other side of the balcony had a unique kitchen. One side has embroidered wooden cabinets from the colonial days, and the other side housed a refrigerator. The contrast was evident in the utensils kept in the kitchen as well. While one side had old brass vessels, the other had a modern dinner set.

In fact, one could not miss the brass finish switches all across the set. "These are all antique switches I got from old markets in Mumbai. And I bought them for only Rs 200! The shopkeeper told me that when I return it to him or resell it, the prices will go up. Apparently, that is the case with these antique things," said JD.

The dining room was just across the kitchen. "You will find three Bheet Kapats (built-in cabinets) in the dining room. We had to make them especially for this set," JD continued. The eight-seater dining table is where the Thakker family has their meals in the serial. The windows were made to perfection with colourful glass pieces on top adding to the show.

The bedrooms on either side of the living room keep on interchanging – sometimes the bedroom belongs to Praveena and Praveen, and other times it belongs to Subodh and Meenakshi.

Surrounding these rooms was a courtyard, and a very narrow lane. The set was perfect for someone to park his scooter in the lane and enter the house through the aangan. The aangan had a well. But it is a fake well without any depth.

"You must be wondering how we do the scenes with water? We made a special well of fibre glass and have kept it elsewhere. Whenever we need it, we get it here," JD explained.

The shooting finally began at 5 pm. The first scene of the day involved Leela (played by Lubna Siddiqui), Subodh (played by Rajesh Kumar Singh) and Meenakshi (Sucheta Trivedi). The first take was not okayed, but they got it right after a couple of takes.

Finally, after a long day, it was time for 'pack up.'

Baa, Bahu Aur Baby is aired on Star Plus at 10 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

JD finds Gattu next door!

Producer JD Majethia has taken a fondness for his neighbour's son. He's often heard talking about the little boy who keeps greeting him with an enthusiastic "Jai Shri Krishna" any time of the day.

JD has two daughters, Kesar and Misri, and unlike most actors he's not into discussing them with his colleagues. So it came as a surprise for all when he spoke boundlessly about this little kid, who lives next door. It was only later that JD realised who the kid was inspired by - he was play acting "Gattu" (Deven Bhojani in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby)!

No wonder JD finds him lovable!
