It is said that we should do work without thinking of the results in the most famous sloka "Karmanyevadhikarasthe". However, we do need to plan ahead in life, don't we?

Eg, hypothetically, if I want to study in one of the top universities. Then I can't just work hard for cracking the exams. If I don't assume about the results being good and hence send in the application, then I can't very well get in, can I ? I do need to plan ahead. Isn't that violation of the above sloka?

I don't think so.

In the eg that you mentioned, your actual goal would be to excel in the field you're studying and then do manav-kalyan. Getting into a good university is not the real goad, its just one stepping stone, and hence it will still be considered part of your Karma.

If you're aspiring to be a Doctor for eg, then it will be your duty to study well and get into the best university so that you be able to procure the best knowledge and become a good doctor.
