I would go ahead and say definitely after Pandu-Kunti marriage. Also, as Ganga di said, he might've done some sleuthing after the rangabhoomi fiasco.
Because Kunti's son or not, Karna was already one formidable character at that point, it's highly unlikely nobody dug up his past. 🤔
This. Thank you! I had missed this part.Originally posted by: proteeti
Thenks! Found it. 😳
"the son of Ganga, whose eyes were covered with film slowly raising his eyelids, and causing the guards to be removed, and seeing the place deserted by all, embraced Karna with one arm, like a sire embracing his son, and said these words with great affection:--Come, come! Thou art an opponent of mine who always challengest comparison with me! If thou hadst not come to me, without doubt, it would not have been well with thee! Thou art Kunti's son, not Radha's! Nor is Adhiratha thy father! O thou of mighty arms, I heard all this about thee from Narada as also from Krishna-Dwaipayana!"
- KMG--Bheeshma Parva--section 124.
I had guessed that sages or celestial beings might have revealed this truth to him but the spy network theory seemed more rational to me. 😆

That is pretty sure that Karna being the son of Adhirath was known by many and his courage accompanied by the valour or Karna might have made others think of his lineage. Plus the behaviour of Kunti.
All these combined, it was very unlikely of someone like Bheeshm to ignore, he would have certainly done his due diligence
BTW what reason did BRC show of his knowing the truth. Am asking this since they had reduced the divinity
Sometimes I feel if Karna actually was the son of Kunti, could not it be that Kunti realised that Karna could be a potential threat to her sons and knew about his adoption story.
So she made up this eldest son theory started a Chinese whisper so that Bheeshm and Krishna get to know of it (am completely removing divinity angle from here) so that one time or other they hint him about it, this would reduce his wrath towards her sons and make him less fierce a competitor. Just think Karna did defeat Yudhishtir, had he killed him there, the war would have ended
Points to ponder

possible, that's very much the reason why she went to persuade him before war but IMO Krishna genuinely wanted him to side pandavas.
So karna's identity was known to Kunti, Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya, Krishna
Did vidur know? Why didn't dhritarashtra reveal it to Dury?

Dury was away in Kurukshetra na. Dhrity got to see him only before the last Mace fight. Karna was toh already dead by then toh bolke kya fayda. 😳
