Chirkut,

Vent away -- I understand your frustration. And it is very sad that this these seriels make an impression on children.

Let me pose one question to you and all parents reading this(I do not have kids yet) -- I know many parents get indian channels because they want to teach thier children Indian values and culture, but do you really think that Indian television is showing children the correct image of Indian culture and values?

Firs off we have these shows (for the most part) which show that there is one self sacraficing person that has to suffer thier whole life, despite them being these ultra-wonderful people.

Second, some of the clothes and dance moves we get to see in Indian music videos would put most of us to shame. My bhabhi's parents were just visiting us in the US and aunty was saying that we do not see American girls dressed like we see in these Indian videos. Granted I am in the midwest, so things may be different in California, NY, etc.

But do you think we are giving our children the correct image of India? I am just curious...

Its sad, but a majority of people are stupid. And they like seeing all the bad stuff happening to one person.

Well considering I am not the brightest light bulb out there -- I do not think I can say others are stupid, but something about these shows is satisfying some kind of entertainment desire. I am not sure why 😕

....i don't think the serials are imparting the coorect view of the reall indian culture....but i am sad to admit that these serials are actually showing what is happening in india or has begun to happen...it's a viscious circle cos a lot of it is happening because of indian tv and cinema....i know a lot of people from india feel there is more culture in many youngsters in UK than in India...just wish someone had the sesne to show the way india really really is in its truest form..

I will be honest here... I got the channels for the entertainment of my parents and in-laws when they were visiting and this has continued. I do NOT let my children watch the indian serials or indian movies. Of course my kids are young and I do not see a need for them to watch. I do not want to spend my time explaining the not so logical and and not so true picture of what India is by letting them watch these serials.

One time when the TV was on, my son go to see the dance video of Raghav - kabhi aar - kabhi paar... questions started to pop for which I did not have answers and from then on, no TV. Of course when grand parents are there, they get to watch a little, but my leash comes out again.

Hi InnocentIndian,

From my experience I can confidenly say that what they show on TV is highly exaggerated. Things have started to happen in India but believe me the middle class is still very middle class in terms of culture, etc. in India. I visit India very often (that too the metros) and I certainly cannot generalize that India has gone to dogs, etc. based on pockets of population. In fact what I see amongst my paerents' neighbours are balanced, mature, sober young individuals who have the priorities set right in life. We can bring up our children with an Indian culture abroad but it is not difficult to do that in India either. In fact the middle class young woman of these days has a new found confidence which was probably not as prevalent 25 years ago or so..We plan on returning to India in 2 years and hence I have done my homework as far as all this is concerned as i have a six year old daughter who by the way loves India:-)

Of course the TV Serials portrayal of sacrificing Bahus,e tc. is really silly and so is the cliched talk of girls being Pariah Dhan which is not so in reality. That is why I liked Astitva to begin with as that does not have cliched dialogues and shows a strong independent career oriented woman who is still aware of her values - which by itself is more real.

innocentindia,
I agree with what you are saying, it is definately a viscious circle...and it is such a sad cycle to fall into because I always felt that our culture was strong and rich -- to bad to see it begin to get influenced in a negative way by television.
Of course as xyzzee said, what we see on television is highly exageratted. For the most part what we see on television is not the true face of the Indian middle class (which most of us probably will fall into). I am very proud of my cousins and the young people in my family in India. They are all mature, young, determined individuals....just like us 😊. So I wonder why we cannot see more normal people like the average joe and jane on television -- something children can identify with.
I do not mean to bash television -- but I think we are seeing to much of the same thing. It is fine to have a few shows that fall into this genre, which appeal to this audience who likes melodrama -- but why does every show have to be that way. Or turn that way. Ye Mere Life Hain -- started out about a middle class girl that aspired to be a director -- but along the way it is also became like every other show.
I used to love watching Astitva because Simran was a good strong character, but how much can one person endure....and why should she always be enduring 😕
But let me take a step back and say television and movies are good in many ways. It does get children interested in the culture, music, dance, etc. And I think it is a good way to learn the language. I was born in the US (my parents sent me to india for high school to learn the culture), but I learned hindi when I was young by watching movies. Of course back in the day I was watching movies like Naram Garam, Gol Maal, Saate pe Saata. So even though vazz mentioned that she brings out the lease (hehe) when her kids are in front of the television, I guess some good is coming out of it.

Very well said. Nice to know you went to high school there to learn teh culture!! Which city/town did you go to? I agree, some of the stuff on TV is just not for kids but some of the programs are not bad and children learn quite a bit from them.. I agree about Simran and only Simran having to endure so much.. So ridiculously unfair and unreal.

My family is originally from Bihar -- so I was in Laloo-land (before it became Lalooland) and I had a wonderful time. It was a great experience and I am glad I got the chance to bond with all my relatives 😊

It really makes a difference when you go as a visitor and when you live there.

Ah, I used to live there too, though quite a few years ago.. It certainly is different, living there and going there as a visitor. Good to know you had a good time there.
