In the latest series of events, Dr Simran's daughter Aastha dies in a car accident and Simran loses her sight. And that's where Mrinal Kulkarni comes into the popular Zee soap.
The actress from Son Pari has been roped in to bail Dr Simran out of her complications. Says Niki Aneja Walia, who plays Dr Simran, "My character goes blind after the accident and there is no one to take care of Aastha – my nursing home."
So, in order to keep the institution running smoothly, the scriptwriters have engineered a chance meeting between a Dr Saakshi (Mrinal Kulkarni), who comes to India for an official purpose, and Dr Simran.
"I play a doctor who is like Dr Simran in many ways. In the show, Simran will insist that I take charge of her nursing home," says an excited Mrinal. Mrinal's association with the show's Astitva director Ajai Sinha goes back a few years. "We worked together in Hasratein for four years. This time, when he offered me Astitva, I knew that I had to do it," says Mrinal.
Apparently, the actress took on Dr Saakshi despite grave reservations about doing a daily show. "I was doing two daily shows for Sahara -– Zindagi Teri Meri Kahani and Arzoo Hai Tu (both off air now). Also I'm doing Son Pari, a weekly. I was tired of working everyday. But this was one role that I couldn't turn down," says Mrinal.
