Dear all
I am new to Astitva EPK, just got myself a Zee connection a couple of months back. I have read the Archives and I think I have a fairly good handle of what has been happening in the past few years.
I understand that Sia has left her mother of 18 years to return to her biological mother Simran. Abhi has returned to his ex wife Simran. Shaguna seems to be willing to give her life for Dr Simran. Sid is willing to sacrifice his love for Dr Simran. Sid's mom is happy to say that Dr Simran has more influence on her son than herself. Anil seems to be very respectful of her.
Simran is surrounded by people who are willing to sacrifice a lot for her sake. I can understand why Kiran hates her so, but what is it about her that makes her so beloved to so many people not only within the serial, but also amongst die hard Astitva fans .
I hope you will indulge me inspite of the fact that I am new and that I have not actually watched from the start - I would love to hear your thoughts on what is it about Dr Simran that people love her so and of course, if there are some who don't think so highly of Simran, your thoughts are welcome too.
Thanks in advance.
A very thoughtful topic indeed !!!
Well, for me, this has many aspects. Here I want to mention that the doctor Simran that I came to love and who endeared herself is a little different from what you see on the screen today. This doctor Simran is a little too forgiving, a little too weepy and somewhat of a pessimist. But prior to the leap, we see a character who is in command of most of the situations she finds herself in with no malice whatsoever inspite of the numerous amount of wrongs done to her by people surrounding her.
First let me take up some points raised by you and try to see if I can elaborate:
I understand that Sia has left her mother of 18 years to return to her biological mother Simran.
Sia was kidnapped by her mother of 18 years, and Sia came back to Simran after her death; in fact the kidnapper/mother Archana herself requested Abhi to take care of Sia after her death; The nani, who was a party to the kidnapping, chose to go back to England. Sia came home not only to Simran, but a father she never had, one and a half set of grandparents, a house full of extended family and of course a sister who unfortunately and understandably did not accept her readily.
Abhi has returned to his ex wife Simran.
That of course was with a great deal of reluctance, which was pretty disgusting in itself considering this man had actually left her in the first place, twice, neglecting his responsibilities of a father, a son and a husband he could never be inspite of marrying thrice. At least this time he is trying to make up little.
Shaguna seems to be willing to give her life for Dr Simran.
Shaguna goes back a long way. She came to Simran when her drunkard husband left her for a another woman, and she in turn saw Simran through her worst phases. In fact she was just like a mother to both the Asthas. Simran took care of her and her family when Shankar went to jail for trying to kill Simran and instead ended up injuring Shaguna. Shaguna in fact has a story which is pretty close to Simran herself. In India, bayis are known to be very loyal, especially if they are working for someone so long and have so much done for them in return. Shaguna pretty much falls into this category.
Sid is willing to sacrifice his love for Dr Simran.
This is a little tricky. I am not sure I can completely justify as I don't really relate to the character of Sid. His mother and Simran fascination seems pretty weird.
Sid's mom is happy to say that Dr Simran has more influence on her son than herself.
Urmilla again has a long history. This woman single handedly tried to destroy Simran, broke her own home, had an illicit affair, neglected her child, schemed against Simran with her lover Ashwin (who again had an axe to grind against Simran who had rejected him in her college days), tried to disfigure Simran by throwing acid on her face, and finally was forced into a prostitution racket by Ashwin, subsequently murdering him and going to jail. At this time, inspite of the extent of damage Urmilla had tried to cause Simran out of jealousy and spite, Simran became her greatest supporter, even getting into a fight with her best friend Manas, Urmi's husband, because he chose to move ahead with another lady Ria.Urmiala does have a lot to thank Simran for.
Anil seems to be very respectful of her.
When Anil got attracted to Kiran, he did not know she had deliberately and consciously broken Simran and Abhi's home, taking Abhi away from baby Astha. Kiran happily walked away from Abhi when she realised that he was not really going to forget Simran or what he did to her nor would he ever come out of the guilt.
Simran is surrounded by people who are willing to sacrifice a lot for her sake.
Except for Sid, as I have already mentioned before, almost everyone, one way or the other, had at one point tried to cause her some harm and were forgiven and embraced by her. She was instrumental in trying to help them out of any sticky situation irrespective of what had happened in the past. It would have to take a very insensitive and ungrateful person to ignore all that.
Coming to what really endeared this lady to her fans, well, as Dr Simran, from the very beginning she was shown as a lady who put others before herself. She left her own sister's marriage to save Anandi. She put up with her mom in laws endless torture without once trying to get back at her. She was pregnant, ill, had high blood pressure and yet sat by her critical father in law inspite of the numerous taunts and open insults by her insolent mother in law in the absence of their son . She always tried to encourage Abhi to take care of his parents inspite of knowing how much her ma in law hated her. In fact it was this that her ma in law had taken advantage of and had nurtured the illicit relation of Abhi and Kiran. Simran was naive ,almost foolishly so in her trust in her man yet when she came to know the ultimate betrayal of that very man she had done all that for, she put her foot down and threw him out of her life. And yet she was so controlled, so decisive in her decision. She did have a nervous breakdown, but she recovered, gathered herself together and faced everything. She decided to bring up her child alone. A very courageous step by any measure. That was a true lesson by all standards.
Yet she has been shown as a woman who has always needed support of her family and even committed big mistakes in trying to keep them happy.
She did a stupid mistake of forcing this very man she loved so dearly to marry another woman because she did not want her father's displeasure and foolishly kept herself connected to them. But when she finally realised her mistake, she tried to correct it, sadly though it was too late.
This is one aspect of Simran which is endearing. She makes mistakes, big ones, but she also accepts her follies. She is not perfect, not by any measure, and has made numerous error in judgements, her insecurity of losing her child made her a liar too, but what really endears her to us is she is strong enough to bear many storms. The insults that she had to bear from her mother in law or Urmilla were heart breaking, but she never let that muddle her professional life. And she does not scheme, or try to be different from what she really is to achieve any objective or get back at them. She is a doctor, carries on her profession and then at the end of the day tries to deal with the problems at home. A very refreshing attitude.
Simran can't cook, she depends completely on external help to clean her house, wears nighties at home, wears simple chiffons at work, drives her own car, reads paper with morning tea, does not wear gaudy bindis or paints her nails blood red and looks like a doctor.......... I guess the best part of Simran is that she is human.
Nikki Aneja's portrayal of course has been instrumental as well. By her own admission she is most unlike Dr Simran. It's the brilliance of her talent that she has evolved a persona so different to what Niki herself is. Truly speaking, I really disliked Niki earlier because she potrayed some typical vampish roles, some of them would even put Astha to shame; her portrayal of dim witted wife in Gharwali Uparwali is in such a contrast to Dr Simran that it is difficult to think it's the same actress potraying these two roles.
So in all, yes, Dr Simran has been a satisfying experience in terms of Indian television characters, especially in todays times, when "strength of character" of a woman means = 6 marriages (be all and end all in a woman's life), 5 divorces, 4 illegitimate children, numerous name changes, 40 years worth of rasoi schemes without the cooking........
Nopes, I would have one Dr Simran anyday instead of 10 Tulsis that I have on my TV screen today.........
👏...wow - when you're hot! you're hot! minnie!
yet another excellent posting with tremondous analysis! good stuff

😆 OK sorry, I exaggerated. She did not marry even twice. But she is somehow the worst of the lot.
The Kasauti heroine married 4 times, Kusum went a complete metamorphosis.
Sigh !!!!

Wow!! I just read this today as I was not regularly connected to the internet on the weekend (moved to a new home). I could not agree more with what you said especially, about the MIL and Urmila bit!! Very well said. It certainly was not easy to forgive the two of them (though both changed completely after they realized their folly) but she did that so very gracefully. I also think Sid feels obliged to Simran for the same reason that Urmila does - because of the way she helped his mom (whom he had always loved) both before and after the leap. Simran also helped him soon after he returned form the States..
BTW, do you write professionally? You write very well so I was rather curious:-)
