Hi Guys,

I'm fairly new to K-drama and find them a refreshing change from Indian soaps.
Am curious about the Noona characters, the sly women, slightly older than the heroes who emotionally manipulate them and frequently form the third angle in love triangles.
Are they like the wicked, Saas/ Mother-in-law of Indian soaps? Tho' stereo typed you can find them in real life. Are noonas real too in Korea?

Any insights?

Well there are some who are plot to separate the leads & get the lead for themselves but the kind of plotting you see is quite different. In hindi serials, there are long dialogues, they are damn draggy & pretty unlikeable. But in most of the K-shows, even the villain isn't exactly one-dimensional..you see a human side to them. I am sure these kind of people exist in all societies.

Yes, i like the villains in K-dramas and some are quite charismatic and walk away with my sympathies. It seems more of mind games here.
i watched coiple of dramas back to back with these kinda antagonists, so was just curious about these characters.
The only Hindi soap i remember with this sort of a woman was in Ashish Sharma's Guanwaon ka devta, where widowed older Bhabhi was the villain in the leads' love story.

Korean drama have meany second leads.. manipulative ommas ..sweet heart appa...comical sidekicks and bricking main leads exactly like how our Hindi dramas do ..but the thing with k-dramas is they keep things short and sweet ..no dragging business..they even give us alittle back story to the baddies making us believe that these guys were actually weren't born bad, in this way there are actually many of villainish character of k-drama that i came to love/sympathized by the end of the series..the thing i like about k-drama is that they are into manipulation and mind game more than all the super draggie sass bahu sazish dramas..!!

Oh!yeah! i like the sidekicks too1they are endearing and like the pace of K-dramas.
Was curious about this particular brand of noona villains not very common in desi soaps, just wondered whether it's somehow reflective of their society.

@simran_singh_24: may be or may not be we can't accurately say that it reflects their society or not ..but these meany noona's/omma's/dongsaeng's /bratty princesses are those type of people whom you will commonly find in all k-dramas..!!

noona basically means older sister. Basically any girl that's older than the guy is a noona. So far I've only seen nice noonas
gu jun pyo's sister-who really liked jan di
or recently tak ye jin from producers.

I think noona romances are very common in kdramas. In which an older woman falls for a younger guy or vice versa like
I hear your voice
we broke up(web drama)

I think the korean equivalent to the evil mother in law...is the rich ,powerful, evil mother in law. They're usually very similar, except for the fact that in kdramas, the mother in laws a least have a job (and a reason for hating the girl, plus they usually become nice at the end)
