Chapter 12

Before you start the chapter, I would like to inform you about some changes that I have made in the Character sketch. Arjun and Sameer know each other since their middle school days i.e. std. 5 while Roshini and Sameer had been friends since the time they were small kids of 2 to 3 years. Roshini being the daughter of a distant relative, made her his cousin too. But due to some issues she along with her family had shifted to Bangalore when Sameer was 10 and she was 7. After that they had met in the college. So now let's start.

Riya saw Sameer going back to his cabin as Arjun too followed the suite not before signaling her to follow him while she discreetly signaled him towards the file telling him that she would come after talking to Sameer. As she entered Sameer’s cabin, she saw him standing near the window looking outside towards the bustling city. Sameer heard her entering and looked at her with an eyebrow raised.

Sameer: You do know I am your senior, right?

Riya chuckled lightly keeping the file on his desk as she went over to him and then stood beside him without a word just looking at the city in front of her while Sameer kept looking at her in confusion.

Riya: I am not here to talk to my senior. She looked at him smiling. I am here to talk to the person I regard as my elder brother. Can I now?

Sameer at first stood shocked. He didn’t know how to reply to that. He had of course seen her as a sister and also, he knew that she too regarded and respected him as an elder brother but none of them had ever said it out aloud. So, what happened now? After a few minutes of silence, as he tried to comprehend her words, he smiled at her warmly making her smile wider.

Sameer: Well then, I guess you do not need permission to talk too, Riya.

She took his hand as she guided him towards the couch that was kept in his cabin and made him to sit there while she herself settled beside him. She looked at his face for a moment trying to strike a conversation but then decided against it. This man sitting in front of her was the ETF chief and beating around the bush would do nothing good yet she knew she couldn’t be very direct.

Riya: It feels so lonely.

Sameer felt his breathe stop for a second. He couldn’t say if she was stating the fact or asking him about it yet somehow, he knew that she was doing both. He looked at her for a second before again turning his face away from her.

Sameer: I understand. But I know Riya, you will be soon out of this phase with your head held high.

Riya knew that he was trying to escape the real issue yet she felt herself flinch at his words as they reminded her of the torturous life she had been living in the past. She shaked her head a little trying to keep her mind away from those thoughts and took a deep breathe, very well knowing that she needed to approach him in a stricter manner.

Riya: Your mother.

He snapped his head towards her suddenly as she continued;

Riya: She must be missing her sons, right?

Sameer couldn’t understand if she was talking about the same what he thought or it was just a slip of tongue. Her eyes held the composure and confidence in them and he knew that she knew what she spoke. Sameer sadly stretched his lips just enough to show that he could smile saying;

Sameer: She does. She misses m-us.

Riya smiled looking at him as she put a curl behind her ears again looking towards the painting which hung just beside the window in the cabin.

Riya: At least you know whom I am speaking about.

Sameer breathe deeply before smirking;

Sameer: I have brothers, though not siblings, maasa treats them as her own.

Riya chuckled at his words while saying;

Riya: Yet we know, we aren’t talking about the ones who are related by blood or family rather the one related by heart.

Sameer sucked in air as he got her words and also the person she was talking about;

Sameer: So, he told you.

Riya: No, he didn’t. But I know everything.

Sameer chuckled shaking his head;

Sameer: Of course, you do. After all you worked on the case and I can’t expect you to be a clueless soul now, can I?

Riya’s smile widened at his response as she laughed a little while he grew sad and serious closing his eyes trying to hide his pain;

Sameer: He was never wrong yet I wronged him. He never backed off yet I decided to back off from providing him any kind of support. He was always with me yet I left him when he needed me the most. He was always trustworthy and yet I misjudged him. Heck, I wasn’t even supposed to judge him ever.

Riya: Though some of the things are correct yet you aren’t entirely correct sir.

Sameer looked at her in confusion as his eyes showed his vulnerability and weakness, his tears and sadness.

Riya: You are right that you shouldn’t have left him on his own and the worst part you should never have blamed him for the happenings. Yet, the judging part is wrong. Believe me when I say this, you aren’t just supposed to judge his deeds but also correct him when required, even if it means that you beat the shit out of him.

Sameer looked at her amused while she just shrugged continuing her sentence;

Riya: A friend is supposed to do that you know even I did the same with Shree and Chotu.

Suddenly Riya stopped in between as she registered the words she had said without a thought as the pang in her heart came back reminding her again how everything had been changed. Sameer looked at her understanding how she must be feeling, after all this friendship thing isn’t new to him. He knew that Riya was terribly missing her good old days and more than that she was missing her friends, her bestie and also that the girls weren’t making it easy for her either. She had already fought for her existence in the last three years and now that she was back to her own people, yet she had to fight for her survival. All alone all by herself or maybe some hot-headed cop was there by her side. The last thought made Sameer smile in his head as he thought about them being with each other.

Sameer: Life never stops Riya. As your mentor I will give you a lesson now.

Riya looked at him as he could see a thin sheet of tears glistening in her eyes which she masked behind her smile perfectly.

Sameer: There might be problems now but remember, it has been almost three years. Ye rishte kaafi waqt se kanch ki seeshi me band pade hai. Thoda waqt do unhe unse bahar aaneka, khuli hawa me saans lene ka, ye bhi phir se mehek uthenge. They suffered you lose and to overcome it, they decided to let your memories be in a safe closet of their hearts where no one else could find them and now to again have them resurfaced, time is the key dear.

Riya understood what he was trying to say. Though it did pain her yet she knew that he was right and suddenly she started comparing her relationship with Shree and Chotu to that of Arjun and Sameer. And what amazed her was the similarities. It indeed had been years for them and same for Arjun and Sameer yet they knew that the feelings were still intact in some corner of their hearts. She now knew how Sameer explained her was what he too needed to know yet he didn’t.

Riya: Don’t you think, even you need to do the same? Khuli hawa me saans lene dijiye is rishte ko sir, mehek uthega ye bhi. Shayad pehle se bhi zyada khushbudaar banke.

Sameer looked at her for some time and shaked his head;

Sameer: Then there’s something more that you need to know Riya. Many times, we humans what rests behind are the feelings and the relations. And once you leave something behind, you can’t expect it to be back.

Riya smiled at him as she looked at the same painting in front of her once again. She didn’t know how but that painting was giving her strength, helping her with her words and maybe also was the reason she was so composed. Somehow, she felt at peace.

Riya: Sir, you are my mentor and whatever you would teach me I am sure it must be the right thing todo. But I have learnt something from my mother.

Sameer looked at her face trying to gauge from her expression where she was leading to;

Riya: Rishte peeche choot sakte hai, toot nahi sakte. Zaroorat hai to sirf haath badhaane ki. Baaki to wakt apne aap hi sab kar jata hai.

Her words hit him hard. Indeed, she was right. And after all that had happened the least, he could do was to try and take a step ahead. He knew that it was now his turn to make everything right. His Arjun had done so much for him, for Roshni, for their friendship. Now it was his turn to mend these relations. But the fact was he didn’t know. He didn’t know how was he going to convince Arjun or would he ever forgive him? Riya understood his inner turmoil the way his expressions were changing, gave her an insight to his thoughts.

Riya: A mother’s lap does wonders sir. Saying this stood up going towards the window as she continued to gaze down at the buzzing roads of Mumbai.

Sameer smiled widely as he understood her plan but then was confused. How did she know about it all? These things were very personal and her knowing means either she had put some illegal sources or maybe D.I.G. sir and DCP sir had done honors

Sameer: You know awfully too much about me. Don’t you?

Riya chuckled at his words as she could feel him literally smiling from ear to ear.

Riya: Mhane to bhabhi sa re sandarbh me bhi sab maloom se Kunwar ji.

Sameer looked at her with his eyes wide opened while his mouth opened and closed like a fish. He felt his heart beating fast as if it would come out any moment.

Sameer: How- why- who? Only Arjun knows this. Did he-?

Sameer kept on blabbering while Riya laughed at his face which looked nothing less than that of a tomato, totally flushed and embarrassed.

Riya: Don’t worry sir. Sikandar ke ishq me Saiba ko aapki kundali nikalni padgayi thi. But this is just up tome. I haven’t told this to anyone. Not even during my mission.

Sameer: I know Riya. I trust you. And about my marriage, you know what had happened. Till the time she isn’t comfortable for this relationship, I don’t want anyone to know about us.

Riya: I understand sir. And I must say, you guys have handled all of this very maturely.

Sameer smiled at her while patting the seat beside him as he called her to sit there asking;

Sameer: So, you must even know, Arjun and I have been more of brothers than friends.

Riya sat beside him comfortably looking at him;

Riya: I do. Also, that your parents, specially your maasa loves him more than you.

She said in a teasing tone which made Sameer laugh while Riya too laughed with him;

Sameer: Believe me, I often think if I am her own son or Arjun.

Riya laughed more at his expressions of pure confusion as if a baby is complaining to his mother while seeing her laugh, Rathore could feel his eyes getting wet. This was the first time after her comeback that he had seen her laughing just like she used to back then.

Sameer: And now I have one more competitor.

Riya raised her eyebrows at his words not understanding what he was trying to say as Sameer explained;

Sameer: Come on. Maasa is going to love you more. And if I am not wrong, Babasa will surely keep you like a princess. I do not have a sibling you know.

Riya’s eyes watered as she heard him. She had already lost her parents in these three years and couldn’t even attend their funeral as she busy being Saiba. She got to know about their death yet could do nothing. And today here she got a brother she never had, and now a family he was giving her. This was too much for her. Her happiness could be seen in her eyes.

Sameer: You called me your elder brother Riya. And I am telling you, maasa and Babasa are going to be the happiest. You know, I had told them about you everything till now and now I am going to take you to them. They are very eager to meet you.

Riya didn’t want her emotions to take control over her. She knew once that happens it would be very difficult to control her. She just wiped her tears and hugged Sameer tightly as he laughed at her reaction. After a few minutes, Riya said;

Riya: You do have two cousin sisters, don’t you?

Sameer chuckled at her saying,

Sameer: Yes, but you know, you are exclusively mine. For them I have share them with my other cousins but not you.

Riya laughed with Sameer as both of them again immersed themselves into their talks totally forgetting the file and other works.

Both the person had alack in their lives which the other one fulfilled and these new relationships made them much stronger than before. Riya knew that it was almost sorted at Sameer’s end, yet she needed to talk to Arjun too. She was sure that she was going to mend these long-forgotten relations making them much stronger than before.

Hello people, so I know it’s been a long time. I am pretty busy as I had informed you guys about my tests and exams along with those projects and assignments. They tend to tire me out and hence the wait. I hope this chapter was worth reading and not too much cringe worthy. Do tell me your views. What do you think? And also, Happy Raksha Bandhan in Advance.

Till the next time, take care, stay safe and keep smiling.
