Chapter 6

In an instant, Arjun was enveloped in worry. His mind wandered off everywhere, imagining the worst. Pushing away the horrific images his tragedy hit mind played, he scrambled to reality.

"SHREE. RIYA KA PHONE TRACK KARO

NOW."

Shree immediately got to work for he knows that tone, it meant they have trouble. Not understanding why suddenly his senior wanted to track his once upon a time bestie's phone, Shree silently hoped everything was fine.

Everyone's just stared on as the techie hit various buttons. Beside him, Arjun looked like a mess,furiously running his hands in his hair. It was Yash who spoke up, because honestly who would dare?

"Kya hua Arjun? She's at the hospital na? Checkup ke liye gayi na? Ajayegi"

"Something is wrong Yash." Arjun said, every passing minute adding to his worry."Riya didn't receive my calls and now she texted back......"

"Haan toh problem kya hai?"

"Khud hi dekhlo" Arjun said, passing his friend his phone.

Yash took the phone, read the message and voiced out, "Toh usne kahan hi toh hai she's fine. Kyon itni tension lete ho....."

"NO" Arjun took a deep breath and continued.

"Riya doesn't use such short forms. She's someone who'd enunciate every syllable and type in the most accurate grammar syntax"

It was Sakshi's turn to pipe in "She must be in a hurry. Tum na kuch zyada hi tension lete ho uski, koi choti bachi nahi hai..."

Arjun glared at them furiously and was about to shout when Shree spoke up, "Sir woh to office ke Paas hi hai. She's turning the corner as we speak"

"Bola tha na theek hogi...." Before Yash could even complete his sentence, Arjun ran out the hall and down the stairs, not even bothering to wait for the lift.

10 floors later, as Arjun reached the parking lot, he saw a taxi pull up. A few seconds later, Riya came out of it, calming his erratic heart.

As soon as she haw him, hair messed up and breathing heavily, Riya straightened herself and slowly walked upto him, bracing herself for his infamous lecture.

"What the hell Riya? WHAT THE HELL? Bola tha I'll pick you up?! Had hoti hai laparwahi ki! AND WHAT WAS THAT MESSAGE? Pata hai kitna dargaya tha Mein? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU"

Riya stared at him meekly for a couple of seconds and then handed her phone to him and softly explained, "I fell asleep early yesterday and forgot to charge my phone. Hospital mein I noticed ki I had only 7% battery left. Mein ne socha ki office Jaane tak battery bachaye rakhti hoon isiliye didn't take your calls. And woh message bhi short the kyu ke the battery was running out too fast. Dekhiye ab switch off hogaya ".

" You could've called me from the hospital phone?!! "Arjun gritted through his teeth, exasperated with the woman in front of him.

" Number Yaad Nahi sir " Riya replied, visibly afraid of him." Andar chalte hai na I'm so tired. Upar se itni garmi ufff"

" I might as well write my number and slip in your pockets, like for a five year old."

He snorted making Riya wince.

Riya sighed, as they went towards and into the lift. At least he bought this lie.

"And Buddy, what did the doctor say?" Yash asked Riya, as he just read over the report she had just bought him.

" Vitals are normal. Immunity still weak and diet Mein thode changes kiye hain" she replied. "And added a couple of new meds" she said groaning.

" Time se lete rehna warna Arjun Pagal hojayega. You should've seen him today, tum ne calls nahi uthaye and here this janab was about to commit a crime.. He was so tensed."

Riya just smiled, "Unhe toh bas pareshan hone ki aadat hogayi hai."

"Ek Baat batao Riya," began Yash, unsure if it's the right think to ask "Kya tum dono Pehle se aisa hi the? . I mean I've never seen Arjun like this before. Tum dono ke beech kuch...." he trailed off suggestively.

"No Sir Nothing like that." Riya had to admit, she was disappointed with what she was saying. "Rahi Baat unki concern ki, he was always concerned. The difference is Pehle woh chilla ke apna concern dikhate the and now he's all out open. He'd always find something to disagree with me, he just wanted to push me away. But now that I come to think of it, I guess he just was trying to protect me. Can you blame him though, I'd go out on the field and could never shoot. I'd drive him mad " she says laughing at their antics in the past.

" Hmmm. And why do you think he's showing you how he feels? I mean Arjun was never someone who'd let his feelings out, let alone let the entire office know. He's changed, Riya. And I bet a million bucks to say you've sparked that change."

The research specialist just looked on, unsure of what to make of the situation. True, Arjun was always overprotective of her. The fact that she's standing, alive today was a testimonial to that. But did he.....? A question Riya had asked herself many times but dreaded the answer. What if it was just his guilt? For all she knows Arjun does his duty to the fullest, going out of the way to make sure everyone is okay, even if that meant he had to risk his life.

Arjun rubbed his forehead for the umpteenth time, his nerves pounding notoriously, wrecking havoc to his already compromised mind. He just couldn't help but think of Riya. She looked fine, the doctor said she's doing great but there was something Arjun couldn't lay his finger on. Something definitely felt wrong. A sharp pain rose in his chest and as he clutched his shirt above it, he wished only one thing. Riya's safety and happiness.

Riya was passing by his cabin when she saw the uneasiness on her boss' face. Guilt overpowered her mind and she found himself walking over to him.

Arjun looked up as he heard the door open and saw Riya walking towards him. He sighed and looked away. She slowly made her way by his side and held his hands, making him look up into her eyes.

"I'm okay. Look at me. Sab theek hai. Aap itna pareshaan kyu horahe hai."

Arjun spoke up, his voice rough and shaking, "I don't know Riya. Ajeeb sa lag raha hai. As if something wrong is going to happen. As of something is going to hurt us. I just can't get rid of this feeling." he sighed. "And whatever it is I'm fine with it hurting me. I can't loose you Riya. Not again. You've kept me alive Riya. I was dead the day I found out about Roshni. Mar chuka tha Mein. I, I.. I don't want to loose you."

Riya felt a knot in her stomach. Her conversation with Yash a few minutes ago rang in his mind." He's changed, Riya. And I bet a million bucks to say you've sparked that change." he had said.

She felt horrible for lying to him.

A few hours ago

Riya had just come out of the hospital and was about to hire a taxi when she noticed a man gazing at her intently. Clad in a black leather jacket and a mask covering his face, the man kept following her. Fear struck her mind and she kept thinking of the safest thing to do. Should she shout for help or tackle the man alone? She couldn't handle it alone and she knew it. Years off the field had rusted her skills. And on top of that the dying battery of her phone didn't help.

Muttering a prayer and mustering courage Riya moved in and out of random streets hoping the man would lose sight of her. When that didn't work out Riya went to the nearest Metro station and waited for sometime. As the train arrived at the platform, Riya noticed the man getting in. Before he could make head or tail of the situation, Riya backed off and watched the train go.

She quickly hired a taxi and headed for the Headquarters,her heart hammering away in her chest. She didn't know if the man was an eve teaser or a stalker or if there's something much more than that. She desperately hoped it was the first. Because if it was the latter, she was in trouble.

Coming out of her trance, Riya caressed Arjun's hand with her thumbs and said, "Aapke hote mujhe kaisa kuch hosakta hai sir."

Arjun looked at her for reassurance and asked "Are you sure? Kuch nai hoga na?"

Riya nodded in agreement. Little did she know her fate was not so benevolent.
