PART-2

Time: 6:30 am

Some movements and few whispers in mellowed voice disturbed his sleep. He lazily opened his eyes and found himself not in his bedroom. Uncomfortably, he returned to his sitting posture on the sofa and tried to understand the situation. A few moments later, the memories of the incident that took place last night flooded his mind and he swiftly moved towards the bed to check on the current status of the unconscious girl whom he discovered last night. Alas! She is yet to regain her senses.

To his relief he found Sameer & Ayesha has already arrived and are now attending the girl. Arjun went to his bedroom to freshen up and returned shortly.

Arjun: What's your diagnosis, Sameer?

Sameer: I'm not sure, but she was heavily drugged.

Ayesha: She even has an injury on the posterior side of her head. But fortunately she is not sexually abused. Atleast it appears so.

Arjun: ohh...!!! (Relief washed his face)

Sameer: But we need to transfer her to the hospital immediately before the effects of the drug turns ugly.

Arjun: hmm... Shree prepare my SUV.

Shree nodded & went out. After about 4 minutes, a honk of the SUV was heard and everyone started making arrangements to transfer the girl into the car. They have to be careful especially because it was still raining outside, though its intensity has subsided a lot.

Soon two cars (one of Arjun and the other of Sameer & Ayesha) zoomed off the forest bungalow towards their destination, the nearest hospital.

The girl was admitted in the ICU of the hospital, Sameer was her doctor in charge while Ayesha was her gynaecologist. They soon got busy in carrying out some tests and giving her necessary medication while Arjun waited outside her cabin patiently. After about an hour, Sameer came and informed Arjun that the girl is under observation and they would need some time before concluding what had actually happened to her. He asked Arjun to relax and also advised him to return to BTR office and carry on with his work there; meanwhile if some development takes place in the hospital, he would inform Arjun about the same. Arjun nodded and returned to BTR office not before requesting Sameer to take good care of her.

While driving back to the BTR office, Arjun was completely engrossed in thoughts of the series of incidents that took place in last 24 hours. It was a kind of roller coaster ride for him.

He returned to BTR office at around 11:30 am. As soon as her entered his office, Shree, Chotu and other staffs started bombarding him with their questions about the girl.

Arjun: She was drugged, injured on the back side of her head, no sign of sexual assaults and still unconscious. She is under observation. Doctors are treating her.

Everyone sighed in relief.

Shee: All the necessary protocols about last night's raid and subsequent seizure are done. Detailed report of the same is ready for you to check and submit to head quarters. Here is the Seizure memo sir.

Arjun: Seizure memo is perfect. Take this I've signed it. Fax it to head quarters Chotu.

Chotu: Yes Sir.

Arjun: Shree I've to go through the report, we have to make a strong recommendation against these illegal animal skin smugglings and the probable human trafficking through BTR. Strict actions are needed to be taken immediately against these poachers.

Everyone present there nodded in agreement. Arjun went inside his cabin to work on the report. After about an hour he mailed it to head quarters. He then retired to his bungalow to take a bath and have his lunch.

Ramu Kaka: Arjun baba, how is that betiyan?

Arjun: Still unconscious...Sameer & Ayesha are there treating her. I'll go there in the evening.

Ramu Kaka: Wish she recover soon...God knows what's going on with her family members...they must be hell worried about her by now...

Arjun: Hmm...I guess so.

Ramu Kaka: Arjun baba, you go take a bath while I serve your lunch, it's quite late.

Arjun went inside his bedroom.

After lunch he returned to BTR office only to learn that someone had called up in the office and was enquiring about the girl. However, when Chotu asked the caller about his name, the caller quickly hung up. Chotu find it quite weird.

Arjun: Did you mention anything about the girl, especially about her being already shifted to the hospital?

Chotu: No Sir, I just said that she is not here. I didn't mention anything about her being in the hospital.

Arjun: Oh no...it is not very hard to figure out where she could be if she is not here. And, if the caller is one of those who have drugged her, then she is in danger. I've to go to the hospital.

Arjun blasted the engine of his SUV in a hurry and zoomed away leaving behind a totally confused Chotu.

While driving through the woods, he dialed Ayesha's number.

Ayesha: She is responding, Arjun. We expect her to gain her senses within a couple hours.

Arjun: She might be in danger. I'm on my way to the hospital. Keep a close eye on her and don't leave her secluded in her cabin. Also, don't let any unauthorized person inside.

Ayesha: I see, don't worry Arjun, Sameer & myself will personally keep a close watch on her. Come soon.

Arjun: Hmm.

The call went dead. When Arjun reached the hospital he found Ayesha injecting her with some medicine & Sameer busy in reading her pathological reports. He sighed in relief. Arjun called up the local police station and arranged security for her in the hospital. "What is happening around?" asked Sameer. Arjun informed them about the anonymous phone call asking about the girl's whereabouts and his opinion about the same. Sameer & Ayesha took the matter seriously and appreciated Arjun's decision on the arrangement of her security in the hospital. They were talking among themselves when suddenly; the girl moved and started making some incoherent noises. Sameer went towards the girl to take a closer look followed by Ayesha. The girl slowly opened her eyes and then tried to get up but couldn't when she felt a pain in the backside of her head.

Ayesha: Don't get up...you have an injury in your head. It will hurt you.

The girl moved her head a bit to take a clear view of her surroundings. When she understood that neither the surrounding nor the persons standing beside her bed are familiar she questioned "Where am I? What has happened to me?"

Ayesha: Hi. This is Dr. Sameer & I'm Dr. Ayesha. We are treating you. At present you are admitted in a Hospital in Alipurduar because you were drugged and unconscious. Arjun, the forest ranger of Buxa Tiger Reserve, have found you unconscious yesterday night in a van full of smuggled goods and he have got you admitted in here this morning.

The girl: Ummm...aaa

The girl seemed to process the information for a few moments. She looked lost and could not comprehend on her present situation.

Ayesha: This is Arjun, the person who was the first to find you.

Arjun came forward and found the girl looking at him. He understood that the girl has still not come to terms with her current situation.

Arjun: What is your name? Where are you from? If you can provide us with a phone number, then we can inform your family members about you.

The girl: ...

Ayesha: What had happened to you? Who drugged you? Are you local or staying at some other place?

The girl: I...I don't know. Ummm... I can't remember.

Ayesha: Ok don't stress yourself, just relax and then try and remember. This is just the effect of drug.

Even after trying hard she failed to remember herself. Arjun then took a writing pad and a pen and handed them over to her.

Arjun: Please sign on the paper.

The girl: But I can't.

Arjun: Don't worry, just relax and then try to sign on the paper.

She scribbled something on the paper and then handed it over to Ayesha saying she can't remember her signature. On the paper she somehow scratched the name or a part of the name "Riya".

Sameer: Ok don't worry, now relax, may be in a day or two you would be able to remember everything.

Meanwhile Ayesha administered an injection on her that will help her nerves to relax and soon she dozed off to sleep.

Sameer: Partial amnesia.

Arjun: What do you mean?

Sameer: Effect of the drug. May be just temporary.

Ayesha: May be not. Let's not overlook the fact that she was hit on the posterior side of the temporal lobe of her brain. It is the site for memory in human beings.

Sameer: Hmmm...you are right Ayesha. We need to take a CT scan of her brain and a MRI may be, to get a deeper understanding. There is a possibility that a blood clot in the capillaries of her temporal lobe is the root cause of her partial amnesia. Ayesha please make arrangements for her CT scan, ASAP.

Ayesha hmmmed and went away.

Arjun: Sameer, can you please elaborate on her present condition so that I too can understand it.

Sameer: Arjun as we all know she is hurt on the backside of her head and she cannot remember anything, there are chances that there is a blood clot or injury in her temporal lobe, a specific part of her brain where memories are stored in humans.

Arjun: That means Riya has lost all her memories!

Sameer: And who is this Riya?

Arjun: She is Riya (pointing towards the girl).

Sameer: How do you know?

Arjun: From her signature.

Sameer: But she doesn't remember her signature (having a puzzled look on his face).

Arjun: Signature is a kind of a reflex action just like cycling or swimming, that once learnt cannot be unlearnt. Even if someone forgets his name he can sign, most likely out of a habit rather than from his memory. She signed as "Riya" so we can safely conclude that her name or a part of her name is "Riya".

Sameer: Offcourse.

Arjun: But what about her memories?

Sameer: I'm not sure Arjun, but let's hope it is just a temporary condition. Now I've to go to look after the ongoing procedure of her CT scan & MRI. You wait here & don't worry we will do whatever we can. Now excuse me.

Arjun: Good luck Sameer.

Sameer went away leaving behind Arjun inside the cabin with a sleeping Riya. Arjun went closer to Riya and observed her sleeping form. She appears to be sleeping peacefully. She is smiling in her sleep. May be she is dreaming. What could probably be the subject of her dream? Arjun wandered. About her family, her friends, her boy friend? Arjun remembered her eyes; big, doe-shaped, black, sparkling pair of eyes. They surely are an ocean of secrets. He wandered what mystery lies within her heart and will he ever be able to get hold of them.

Meanwhile Ayesha entered the cabin along with two nurses. Arjun moved aside to let them do their work. They transferred Riya to a castered (wheeled) bed and went away to get her CT scan & MRI done. Arjun kept on looking at their way. Her eyes have some hypnotizing power for sure, he thought.

Time- 8:00pm

Sameer: Riya's CT scan reports a slight deformation in the temporal lobe of her brain. But we are not sure about the degree of deformation. We have to wait for the MRI reports.

Ayesha: Hmmm, unfortunately my assumptions are slowly turning true. She must have been hit by some blunt yet hard object on the backside of her head that resulted in the deformation of her temporal lobe followed by a few micro clots in the capillaries situated there. The entire situation worsened due to the effect of drugs. She was traumatized as well. The end result is a partial amnesia.

Arjun: So she won't be able to remember anything about her former life ever?

Sameer: That is very hard to predict. Riya may be able to remember everything within a few days or within a few weeks or few months. Riya may not be able to remember anything at all, even.

Arjun: My God!

Ayesha: Don't be so disheartened Arjun. Atleast we know her name. The progress is not as bad as you think.

Sameer: And considering all of our sincere effort and enthusiasm, I'm sure she will be fit soon.

Arjun: Fingers crossed.

Ayesha: It's already late, why don't you stay with us tonight, Arjun?

Arjun: That's so kind of you Ayesha, but I want to stay here for the night.

Sameer: What is it buddy? I admit that Riya is beautiful, but I've never seen you so restless for a girl ever before. I just have a feeling that you are struck by Cupid, my dear friend (smirk).

Arjun: Ayesha can you please check your husband for Schizophrenia, I think he is insane.

Ayesha: Well! Arjun, for the first time ever, I think Sameer is right (giggle).

Arjun: Very funny. Now you two go home coz you need rest. I'm here for her security. See you in the morning. Good night.

Sameer & Ayesha: Good night lover boy (wink).

Sameer & Ayesha went to their house. Arjun sat on the sofa beside her bed.

He should be worried to know that her amnesia may not be a temporary one and she may take a long time to remember her former life, but somewhere deep inside his heart, he was happy to learn that she won't leave him and return to her home anytime soon. In short, Arjun was happy because there are fair chances that Riya will be around.

"Damn you Arjun! What kind of thought is that?" Arjun reprimanded himself. He tried to concentrate on his present responsibilities.

He settled on the couch inside Riya's cabin and dialed Shree's number.

Shree: Sir?

Arjun: Anything important in BTR?

Shree: Negative, Sir!

Arjun: Good.

Shree: Sir, how is the girl, any improvement?

Arjun: Riya is physically recovering but doctors diagnosed her of partial amnesia.

Shree: Her name is Riya?

Arjun: Hmm, I guess so.

Then Arjun explained everything that happened in the hospital that evening. He bid him goodbye by informing that he won't return to BTR that night.

After the call ended, Shree said to himself, "Riya...nice name, she must be a Bengali girl, her face has a Bengali aura."

Scene Shifts to the flat of Sameer & Ayesha.

Time- 10:30 pm

Sameer & Ayesha had already reached their home, freshened up and had their dinner. Now they are preparing for their sleep.

Sameer: Ayesha what do you think, should we discuss the matter with a neurologist?

Ayesha: Yeah, we should definitely.

Sameer: Tomorrow we are going to get her MRI report and then we are going to discuss the case with Dr. Sourav Chatterjee, the neurologist in our hospital, what do you say?

Ayesha: That's absolutely fine.

Sameer: She is beautiful, isn't she?

Ayesha: Yup. You seem to be pretty impressed on her (smirk).

Sameer: I think Arjun is completely impressed by her.

Ayesha: Hmm and so are you.

Sameer: Yes, but I'm completely mesmerized by you sweet heart.

Ayesha: Shut up, liar!

Sameer: I'm not lying dear, please come to me, I can prove it any time (wink).

Ayesha: No you don't have to dear hubby, I'm tired and I need some sleep.

Sameer: I'll help you to fall asleep.

Ayesha: No please...not tonight!

And with that Sameer pulled Ayesha on bed and both of them dived into their own sweet world of love and passion.

Next morning.

Riya's cabin.

Time: 7:00 am

Riya opened her eyes, scanned her cabin for a few moments and found a sleeping Arjun on the couch. She could recognize his face. She tried to remember his name. He was the forest ranger who rescued her and got her admitted in the hospital. But what was his name, she couldn't remember. She slowly sat up on her bed. She could feel that the pain on the backside of her head has subsided a bit. She slowly climbed down the bed, then taking small steps she went inside the bathroom.

Arjun woke up by the sound of the opening of the bathroom door. He was surprised to found Riya returning from the bathroom after freshening up inside, all by her.

Arjun: Good morning!

Riya: Good morning, thank you & sorry!

Arjun: I didn't get that.

Riya: Thank you for saving me & getting me admitted in here and sorry because I couldn't recall your name.

Arjun: No need of thank you coz that's my duty and my name is Arjun Rawte, Forest Ranger, BTR.

Riya: Hello sir, I'm...aaa...I'm ...

Arjun: Riya.

Riya: Who's Riya?

Arjun: Your name is Riya.

Riya: Are you sure? coz I don't remember anything.

Arjun: Yeah, trust me, I know.

Riya: Ok. Hello Sir, I'm Riya. (She forwarded her hand towards Arjun).

Arjun: Hello Riya, nice meeting you. But please don't call me sir, you are not my sub-ordinate.

Riya: Then how do you know me?

Arjun: I don't till now, but will surely figure out together. Now I really think you should sit down because you are standing since last 10 minutes in a stretch and you are weak.

Riya slowly climbed up her bed and settled down there. Arjun then excused himself and went inside the bathroom. Riya tried hard to remember atleast something that happened in her life earlier than yesterday.

Alas! She failed to do so.
