Chapter sixteen

Next morning Karan parked a Toyota corolla in the driveway of Mukharjee mansion. Arjun helped Di to get don from the car, and trio approached to the mansion entrance.

A girl of her late 20's, clad in a formal black suit received them.

Girl : (extended her hand to Di) Advocate Tandon, right!! Welcome to the mansion. I'm Pragya Sarkar, Mr. Ratan Mukharjee's PS.

Di : thank you, Miss Sarkar.

Pragya : Plz, call me Pragya.

Di introduced Arjun & Karan to her.

Pragya : I must say Ms. Tandon, you are such a gem, aap ki tabiyat thik nahi hain..phir vi sirf deadline maintain karne ke liya aapne yeh meeting cancel nahi ki...Sir is really impressed with you. That's why he agreed to met you without his lawyer, Mr. Tyagi. & Mr. Tyagi bhi aapki kaafi taarif karr rahe the...

Di : that's his generosity...unko taarif karne ki aadat hain.

Pragya : Aur Sir ko tariff na sunne ki... unke saamne taarif nahi chalti...he's really impressed with your seriousness.

She lead them to a office room inside the mansion. It was a big room, decorated with a hug secretariat table, a pc kept beside it. And some files & two cordless telephone sets on the table, a big window in the right wall, & the left wall was decorated with a bookshelf. A small bar court near the window, and the wooden furniture,& chairs are of old model. Dark red carpet was covering the floor and a long red couch was placed aside. This room was a unusual combination of modern and old school thoughts.

Pragya asked them to wait for Mr. Mukharjee and she went away to inform her boss.

Karan : I'm feeling..as if I've swallowed a bunch of butterflies,,& now they are flying inside my stomach..yaar aisa ghar toh...sirf films main dekha hain!

Arjun felt his palms are sweating...he leaned towards Di.

Arjun : Are you sure Disha! Jo bhi karr rahe ho woh thik hain..

Di : Aab sochne ka waqt nahi hain..chup chap baitho..aage jo hoga dekh lenge.

The door opened and a man of late 50's entered, Pragya followed him. He introduced himself to everyone and the meeting started. Di gave him the particulates and thy discussed on it, Arjun supported Di in between and Karan was a silent audience of everything.

Mukharjee : Impressive Ms. Tandon, I liked your idea..aap toh dono taraf ke liye yeh kaam aasan karr dia...I loved it. Aap bohot tarakki karnewali ho!

Di : Thanks...aap jaise successful insaan se complement milna accha laagta hain. Anyways kuch suggestions vi mil sakta hain kya? (she smiled)

Mukharjee : Concentration & hard work..there is no secret ingredient for success...I've started 27 years back as a junior accountant in a financing company..and now I've found my own empire...meri hard work mujhe yahan laaya hain...but haan..discipline bohot zaroori hain...agar discipline na rahe toh saare mehanat bekar ho jaata hain...

Arjun : Lekin badi success ke liye kuch na kuch kurbaan karna padta hain, kuch khona padta hain..aapne kya khoya hain? Mr. Mukharjee?

Suddenly Ratan Mukharjee's face became grim, for the first time he hesitated to talk.

Mukharjee : Kis kurbani ki baat kar rahe hain aap?

Di : Inka matlab hain, real estate tycoon Ratan Mukharjee banne ki liye insaan Ratan Mukharjee ko kuch khona toh nahi pada na?

Mukharjee : (smiled faintly) Accha sawal kia hain, lawyars! Hann..khoya toh hain...Mili..meri wife...left us 16 years back...when my son Anik was only 4. I couldn't be with her in her last days...nor with my son when he needed me most. Jhamele ke darr se dusri shadi vi nahi ki...sirf kaam pe hi concentrate kia...

He moved to the window, staring at outside.

Mukharjee : Mera bas ek hi family hain, mera beta Anik. Wahi mere personal success hain.

But his voice was not that confident like before, when he was talking about his business.

Karan : apka ek hi beta hain?

Mukharjee : haan...Anik..my only heir. Usiko sab kuch milga...agar...(he paused for a long moment) ..agar zinda rahe toh.

His voice was depressed, as if he had no hope for his son's survival. Arjun opened his mouth to question more but Mr. Mukharjee's phone buzzed. He picked it up and answered. After that he turned to them.

Mukharjee : I'm sorry..office main ek urgent meeting hain. Baki details aap Ms. Sarkar se le lijiyega...we'll met later.

Di : Yup..no problem, Mr. Mukharjee..you carry on.

Mukharjee : it's nice to meet you, Ms. Tandon.

Di : My pleasure.

H shook hand with Di and departed, Pragya gestured them to sit and followed him. Karan adjusted in his chair and exhaled sharply.

Karan : Uff!! Bach gaya...Di itna boring kaam kaise kati hain tu yaar!!

Arjun :I don't think he's a happy man at all.

In spite of having everything, people remain unhappy in life, this thought made Arjun depressed very time. But his chain of thought was broken by Di.

Di : Mukharjee is not our topic. Asli baat toh hum yeh pata chala hain, ke unki har cheez ka ek hi waris hain, Anik. Phir 50lacks ki liye itna desperate kyun ho gaya yeh!

Karan : Mere taraf matt dekho, mujhe nahi pata iska jawab!

Pragya entered, she asked if they would like to have anything or not.

Karan refused, and said he need some fresh air, Arjun also said so. They both were expecting Di to stop them, but surprising them, she agreed.

Di : Haan..go...Main papers le leti hoon..baad main discuss toh karna hi hain. (smiled to Pragya) Shall we proceed, Ms. Pargya!

Pargya called a servant to escort them to the garden, he took Arjun & Karan to the backyard garden and asked if they want to drink anything. They refused and warded him off.

Arun : Chal karan ghar ki logon se baat karte hain...

Karan : Toh uss naukar to vagaya kyun?

Arjun : Woh kuch nahi batayga... kisi aur..

Karan : Garage ki taraf chal..wahan driver to hoga...bohot kuch pata chalega.

They moved to the car Shade and found a boy of about 22 was washing cars. Karan approached to him, introduced himself, and started talking about cars. That boy introduced himself as Robin D'souza, Housekeeper's son, works here on parttime basis., and a student of mechanical engineering. Arjun land against another car and listened to the conversation.

Karan : Yahan rehte ho?

Robin : Haan...actually aab Kanpur rehti hoon..vacation pe aayi hoon mom se milne..toh socha kuch income karloon...Mr. Mukharjee acchi salary dete hain..ek semester ki fees aa jayega. Mom pe pressure vi thora kum padega.

Karan : Itna bada ghar main kaisa laagta hain? Terrific na?

Robin : Kya terrific! It's hedious! Itna bada ghar..ghar kam aur museum zyada laagta hain.

He moved to turn on the water tap. Arjun called Karan.

Arjun : usko yeh ghar pasand nahi..Anik ke baare main puch...shayed sach bata de.

Karan nodded & Moved to Robin to help him.

Karan : Yeh ghar sach main itna bura hain?

Robbin : Lagna hi chahiye, nahi?

Karan : Kaise?

Robin : Jaise yeh place...aur..

Karan : Yahan ki log?

Robin : Mr. Mukharjee thik thak hain..

Arjun : toh kaun thik nahi hain? Anik?

Nobody noticed when he came closer.

Robin : That's a thorough scoundrel!

Arjun : Accha! (He settled on a car bonnet.)

Robin : No. 1 shaitaan. Hamesha hukum chalata hain..mom ko toh paagal bana deta hain..main jitna ho sake usse dur rehta hoon.

Kabir : Baap bete ka rishta...

Robin : Bill-hook and the pumpkin!..pura din khitpit chalta hain. Iss larke koh toh bas chahiye...kavi yeh..kavi woh...Mr. Mukharjee is really pissed off, aaj kal kuch nahi deta hain...seedha mana kar dete hain, "Nahi Dunga".

Karan : Toh jyada khitpit paison ko leke hi hota hain?

The discussion was full on. Robin also settled on another car, leaving his work.

Robin : Haan...he spend money like water...umar kum hain toh kya hua...pakka harami hain..drugs, gambling, bating, racing..kitna kahun..sab karta hain...na padhai..na kaam...Sir toh fed up hogaya usse.

Arjun : Toh karta kya hain?

Robin : Sirf shaitaani.. Sir ko toh yeh sab bilkul pasand nahi karte...waise vi usulon ki pakke hain woh..saaf saaf mana kia hain Anik ko..ki uska koi bura kaam bardasht nahi karenge.

Karan : Anik ka reaction kya tha?

Robin : Kuch nahi..baap ke aage uska bolti hamsha bandh ho jaata hain.

Arjun : Tuh uska expenses?

Robin : Mr. Mukharjee ne uska pocket money bandh karr diya hain...no money, no shaitaani. Gusse main pagal ho gaye yeh ladka. Baap ko seedhe muh kuch nahi keh saakta toh peeth peeche gaaliyan deta hain..

Arjun : Yeh kabse hain?

Robin : Yehi kuch 1 month se...pehle yeh ladka bhi accha tha..padhai karta tha..mujhe vi kahi baar study main help karta tha...but kuch ek saal se suddenly woh badal gaya...aur aab toh..hadd hi karr dia!

Karan : hmm...paisa baap se nahi mila toh car ka accident karke...(he noticed Robin raised an eyebrow)..woh newspaper main padha tha..

Robin : news paper main toh iss planning ki baare main kuch nahi tha..(smiled)..Toh aap bhi guess karr lia! Haan...insurance ki paison ke liye kiya hain itna bada drama...

Arjun : Yeh tumhe kaise pata! (he posed as if he was surprised)

Robin : (smiled) Not only me, all close to him or Mr. Mukharjee know it. If you know the true relationship between this father-son, or know in what kind of trouble that Anik is, it's not that difficult for you too. He knows nobody gonna doubt on him, nor even police..of course due to his father. He just took that opportunity, uska amnesia vi jhoot hain. But the problem is, although he could manage to deceive police, doctor & others, the supreme command is held up.

Karan : Supreme command matlab?

Arjun : Mr. Mukharjee.

Robin : Haan... he's a sly customer, & knows his son's ins & outs more than him. He clearly told Anik,"If you want to stay in my house, just bring a new car exactly like the old one you destroyed." & he also declared if he come to know about his bad company or any misdeeds ever, he'll disinherit him from his property & donate everything to a trust.

Now Arjun realized why that man became sad on Di's question about his son.

Robin : aab se Anik ko accha bacch banke rehna hoga...hain na acchi baat!

The happy tone of Robin made both Karan-Arjun understand how much annoyed he was with Anik. Arjun found it's enough for the day and signaled Karan.

Karan : Ok..yaara...tumse baat karke accha laaga..aab hume chalna chahiye. Di ka vi aane ka time hogaya...

Robin : Haan..mujhe vi accha laaga..aaj kal mujhe toh baat karne ko koi milta hi nahi... phir kab aaoge aap log?

Arjun : Pata nahi...but tum humari yahan aa sakte ho...

Robin & Kabir exchanged their numbers and bid bye. they returned to the main hall of the mansion.

Karan : Aab kya?

Arjun : Disha ka wait karenge...pata nahi kya karr rahi hogi... (thought something) for a change..we can explore the house too...karan tu uss taraf se dekh..main yahan se dekhta hoon..

They moved to two opposite direction of the house.

Disha was discussing the terms and conditions of the deal while the housekeeper entered to inform Pragya about the monthly bills, she excused herself and departed with a big file. The housekeeper also followed her but Disha stopped her.

Di : Excuse me, mam..can I have a glass of water..yahan (showed her glass) Khatam ho gaya..

The caretaker smiled at her and moved to the drinks bar.

Cartaker : Call me Mrs. D'souza, dear...

Disha : It's way too much formal, mam.(she smiled)

Mrs. D'souza : Then call me Aunt shiela. (hold out a glass of water) here you are.

Di : Thanks Aunt Sheila!

Within next to minute Disha found that lady was very jovial and down to earth person, easy to mingle with. She told her about herself, her son, her 22 years job in the mansion, Mr. mukharjee & Anik. Their lifestyle and also Pragya. Di didn't have to question her much, she was very talkative. May be she is like this by nature, or have very less opportunity to talk casually, so when she gets the opportunity, she just opens up.

Di came to know, Mr. Mukharjee throws party in every two week, minimum 60 guests come, Pragya decides the menu at the morning...then the arrangement, food everything is Mrs. D'souza's responsibility.

Di : Matlab bohot work pressure hain...

Mrs. D'Souza : Haan..but uske liye Mr. Mukharjee se special thanks vi toh milta hain...unse tariff milna bohot tough hain...lekin haan...Master Mukharjee unse bada dheed hain..kuch vi karo..kavi khush nahi karr paoge..ulta galatiya nikalte hain..."Thank you" word uski dictionary main hain hi nahi..(stopped for a while) Don't think I'm reproving him...malik ka beta hain...malik hi hain, naukri karr rahi hoon, namak kha rahi hoon..par zhoot bolna toh paap hain na!...kya bataun...bechara budhe bap ko bohot satata hain...baat nahi sunte hain..galat companies...aur rude behave..yeh ladka insaan kum, janwar zyada hain!...saaf safayi ki waqt kahin baar ghar ki chota chota cheezain gayab dekhi hain...main vi turant Pragya jee ko bata deti hoon, you know rich logon ka naukri..kavi vi chor title lagake bahar karr denge! ( lowered her voice) Main aur Pragya jee, we both know who takes away those things, kahan jata hain woh vi. Mr. Mukharjee jab bhi bahar jaate hain, Anik un logon ko le aata hain..drink vi karta hain...he drinks like a fish, you know! Aur vi kya kya karta hain...! God! Save us!(she trembled)

Di : Toh..Pragya kuch..

Mrs. D'Souza : Kya kahenge! Beta aapne hi ghar main chori karta hain...Mr. Mukharjee knows everything...but he doesn't say anything..agar mera Robin hota toh...( inhaled sharply)..Sir vi Pragya jee ke liye chup rehta hain...haar baan usi ne Anik ka side lete hain..baccha kahke taal deti hain...pragya jee unh pasand hain na...kuch jyada hi...

Di : (thinking something) Aap ka matlab..

Mrs. D'Souza : I don't wanna say anything...I'm just saying they like each other..boss-employee se thora zyaada hi...mujhe vi Pragya jee pasand hain...unke khilaf kuch nahi kahungi...

Di : So you want to say that...

Mrs. D'souza : Baccha hain, thik ho jayega..yeh sab bolte toh hain...par Pragya khud jaanti hain yeh ladka kavi nahi sudhrega. Uss saitaan ko toh woh vi bari mushkil se jhelti hain...sirf Mr. Mukharje ko pasand karti hain, isiliye uska saara attyachar seh leti hain...

Di : But Pragya..her age is..she's like his daughter..

Mrs. D'souza : So what! She's woman...aur Mr. Mukharjee ka dhayan kuch zyada hi rakhte hain...aur ghar ka bi...( she shook her head in denial) Iss ladki ke khilaf main kuch nahi kahungi...she's a good girl..aur Mr. Mukharj vi bohot saalon se akela hain..unhe vi toh koi saathi chahiye na!

Di : But...

She was about to say something but a voice interrupted. It was Arjun's. They entered with Pragya. Mrs. D'souza jumped on her seat as if someone shot her.

Di : My colleagues...Arjun & Karan..

Pragya : Aap ki friends toh ghabra gaye the..hall main mile dono, soch rahe the shayed aap unhe vul hi gaye... (Di smiled & she looked at Mrs. D'souza) Sheila aunty, plumber aaye hain..aap ko kitchen main kuch karana tha na? (to Di) Sorry, Aap ko thori der aur...

Di looked at Mrs. D'souza, & she lightly nodded her had negativity, to stay mum about their discussion. Di blinked her eyes in assurance.

Di : No it's ok..jitna hain main study karke deal finalize karr dungi...agar kuch chahiye toh aapka lawyer toh hain hi..thank for your time.

She straightened up, her friends followed her.

Karan : Kuch pata chala..

Di : Not here...ghar chalke baat karenge..

They reached at driveway and sat into their car. Arjun started the car while they saw Anik standing with the dogs.

Karan : Yeh ladka aab kya karega!

Di : Nothing, ignore him..Arjun jeep matt rokhna.

To prove her words, Anik said something to the dogs and removed them from their belts. Both ran towards the jeep like thrown arrows... Arjun increased the speed and the jeep sprung out of the mansion, pushing away the half open gate.

all three went to MR mukherjee's home and got hold of many details talking to sheila aunty and her son
so dad is not happy with the behaviuor of his son anik and has cut his pocket money and asked him to behave otherwise he will be cut from his property and that is the reason for anik false accident and
insurance claims
but what is the point of killing di i mean obviously anik knows that because of his dad's name no one will believe DI so by killing her he will create more trouble for himself
good thinking on DI's part and asking arjun to not stop the jeep
