Chapter 34B

Rathore took a moment of silence before he started. He looked at others, then annu, who seemed most interested how and what her dost' was gonna brief, and started with the discussion.

'Chotu, Billa ka kya hua?' Rathore asked,

'abhi tak kuch pata nehi chala sir, but my informers are on him,'

'fast chotu, hum zyada time nehi le sakte, date and time abhi tak nehi pata,'

'Sir,' chotu agreed,

'Shree, tumhe kuch aur mila uss chip mein?' rathore asked shree,

'no sir, the third file is blank, I tried again, but no results,'

'kuch to hai shree, why would it be protected so much if it wasn't important, moreover, they wouldn't save it in the chip on the first place,' Ayesha exclaimed, which amused Annu and turned towards her mother and then to her paper,

'I know ayesha, decode karne mein itni muskil hui hai, one code was getting linked to another and then another, aur jab finally decode hua, there isn't anything.'

'aur M.L Khanaa ke bare mein kuch aur information?' Arjun asked shree,

'nehi sir, bas uthna hi tha, usse zyada information ke liye authorized access chahiye, I don't have,' he replied to arjun, giving a brief look at rathore,

'fine ill try to get them. Ill speak to the commissioner tomorrow,' rathore replied back,

'M.L. Khanna? Home minister? Lekin uske bare mein information kiyu?' Sakshi asked looking around,

Sakshi's voice alerted Annu and she looked up from the paper she was writing or drawing something. She found her 'Dost' forward a file to each of them and all engrossed into it, even her mumma. She held onto the marker tight in her palms and leaned towards Ayesha, pressing her lips, to take a look into the file. She found a paper with some printed list in columns. One of them was marked with a red marker, indicating something really important.

'matlab Ranbir usdin, khanna ke bare mein bata raha tha? It wasn't about food?' sakshi asked gaining attention from annu, who shouted haan' along with her dost who muttered a shayad.'

All looked at her and she smiled at her dost, who shook his head at her slightly. Ayesha nudged her to keep quiet but she was too mesmerized with all the proceeding going on.

Sakshi made a weird face at her and she leaned onto Ayesha all the way smiling at sakshi.

'Annu shh,' Ayesha muttered at her,

'per mujhe bhook lagi hai na?' she said making a sad hungry face at her,

'Annu..' Ayesha scolded her with wide eyes, which she replied with a scary pout towards rathore.

Rathore signed and sat down on his chair. He didn't have much to do in the conversation between the mother and daughter, other than waiting silently for them to finish quickly. Annu surely wasn't the right person to mess up with.

Ayesha looked around avoiding anyone's eyes, she was feeling highly embarrassed now. Finally she stood up,

'Sir, mein isse kisi ke pass chorke ati hu, warna wo bohot disturb karegi,' Ayesha told rathore who made a blank face,

'nehi mujhe nehi jana,' came a loud shout from the conference room, which alerted everyone,

'Annu, bhook lagi haina, chalo,' Ayesha again called gritting her teeth,

'mujhe nehi jana, wo sab bule hai,' she exclaimed, looking outside at the other members smirking faces,

'koi bura nehi hai chalo,' Ayesha held her arm and pulled her down, but she started jumping and yelling again. Finally chotu came into her rescue,

'Ayesha tum rehene do, mein le chalta hu, chalogi na?' chotu stood up,

Annu gave him a skeptical look at his huge frame and held onto her Ayesha tight, eyeing Chotu with her wide scared eyes. Ayesha couldn't get her out of her hold, while chotu was confused and sat back on his seat.

'Annu, ye chotu hai aur bohot acha hai, tumhare dost jaisa,' arjun explained to her, which was the biggest surprise to the rest of the ETF members, who looked at each other shocked,

Annu again looked back at Chotu and then her dost, then at Arjun, who gave his approval in a nod.

'Chalogi?' Chotu asked again,

'haan pel ek con..d...' she looked at rathore for help,

'condition, batao kya hai condition?' Sameer spoke up, breathing out, resting his hands on the table,

'mujhe godh mein jana hai..' she said which again made Ayesha glare at her, but she was smart enough to ignore.

Chotu smiled and came to her. He picked her up and placed her firmly on his left shoulder. She was scared in the beginning but then held onto his head and steadied herself. Bending down slightly, chotu carefully crossed the door and they headed towards the canteen, both happily laughing and giggling among themselves.

Ayesha signed and looked at others, specially Arjun, who was sitting quietly looking down.

'Sorry sir, wo annu itna zid kar rahi thi, isliye lana para, warna mein..' she exclaimed,

'its okay Ayesha, lets continue with the case,' arjun replied, leaning on the chair and picking up his pen,

'hmm...aisha tumhe kya pata chala?' Sameer asked Ayesha,

'Sir, mere informer ne bataya, ki roz subah 9 baje ek aurat uske shop ke phone booth se ek number pe phone karti hai for the past 2 weeks. She never used to speak a word but kept the call after exact 36 seconds everyday. She always used to pay silently and went away.

He found it fishy and followed her for a few days without her notice. Every day she would first visit the vegetable vendor from his shop and buy 2 kilos brinjal and 1.5 kilos tomatoes along with some more vegetables. The shopkeeper had them packed already and handed her the moment she arrived. She paid him in complete cash, she never had to wait for any change. From there she headed towards a hut in a slum.

He tried to find something about her from the neighborhood and they informed about a young woman named maya who stays with her relative who is sick. They had never seen her relative, outside her small hut. Even when maya leaves the house in the morning, she would lock the door from outside. Moreover Maya is dumb but can hear.' Ayesha completed,

'that's the reason she never speaks on the phone, but sends or receives the message by calling at that number,' shree concluded,

'right shree, aisa hi kuch mujhe bhi laga hai, this is the number,' Ayesha exclaimed and gave shree a chit with the number,

It was a mobile number. Shree tried to trace it, but it was switched off. He checked into the details available, it was all fake.

'Awaz to suna hoga? maya ki relative to dumb nehi hai na? ya fir pura khandan dumb hai?' sakshi spoke up,

'nehi, because maya is dumb, they would surely not be in talking terms sakshi,' ayesha exclaimed,

'but doesn't anyone visit maya? They might then be able to meet her sick relative jo har roz brinjal and tomato khati hai,' shree asked with a weird expression,

'neighbours ka kehena hai, maya kisise zyada milti nehi hai. Subah shopping ke baad kabhi nehi nikalti hai,' she explained,

'ye maya bohot zyada ajeeb hai, aur uski relative to usse bhi zyada suspicious,' shree exclaimed

'mujhe bhi maya thori ajeeb lagi isliye meine mere informer ko uss ghar pe nazar rakhne ko kaha hai,'

'good job ayesha,' arjun scowled, and again all looked at arjun surprised,

'Aas pas koi medical store hai waha?' rathore asked lost in himself,

'pata nehi, kyu?' ayesha asked, looking at rathore,

'if the relative is sick, she would need medicines, check the medical stores, waha se kuch pata chalega, kya bimari hai, aur kya medicines leti hai,' Arjun exclaimed and looked at rathore who nodded,

'Right Sir,' Ayesha nodded confident.

'Rawte hum kal subah commissioner sir se Khanna ke bare mein baat karne jayenge, if he is the target he needs protection. I tried to call him now, but Commissioner sir kal milna chahte hai,'

Arjun nodded at him.

'Shree tumhe Jagdish ka phone tap karke kuch faida hua?'

'No sir, natya hadn't called back. Some regular calls from his out station family, some company executives and mostly colleagues, some calls from chauhan also, but none from natya,' shree gave the list to arjun,

'matlab they don't need the materials any more, its all done,' rathore explained,

'right rathore, matlab the D day is pretty near,' arjun nodded at him,

'dammit, abhi tak humare pass koi pakka clue nehi hai, shree ill try to get you the authorized access tomorrow morning, get me Khanna's schedule for the next 15 days. In the mean time check with the other people here,'

'sure sir, ill do that,' shree accepted and went away,

Arjun turned towards the fact board. The empty third file was bothering him a lot. Rathore sat down with the Ranbir's call details file again. Ayesha was restlessly shifting in her seat and sakshi was replying to someone on the phone.

Ayesha was disturbed with annu's long absence with Chotu and had just stood up to take her leave when annu came in giggling in chotu's arms.

'mumma, meine veg..g..ta..ball wala pizza khai, bohot acha tha, haina chotu?' she shouted in an excited tone, jumping in chotu's arms.

Chotu smiled wide nodding his head at her.

Annu clapped her hands and wrapped around his neck,

'bohot mazaa aya, pata hai chotu, mujhe pizza itna pasand hai, mein roz kha sakti hu,' she told chotu who nodded at her,

'mujhe to khana hi bohot pasand hai, mein har waqt kha sakta hu,' chotu told her in a dreamy state,

'chotu!! Annu ab hum saab ghar chalte hai, tumhe sona bhi haina? Team kal subah milte hai, Ayesha chalo mein tum dono ko chor deta hu,' Rathore exclaimed and looked at Arjun, who nodded at him and looked back at the fact board.

'Rawte?' he asked, in a concerned tone,

'tum log jao,' Arjun spoke up still looking at the facts board quietly,

'climinal,' his sharp ears, didn't miss the curse from annu, but he ignored and concentrated back to his work.

Rathore picked up the files and walked out of the room, smiling at annu, who stood at the door, beside chotu.

Sakshi looked at Arjun, but there wasn't any response from his end, so she turned towards the door. She bend down on the little visitor and pulled her cheeks, earning a glare from her. She smirked and looked at Ayesha,

'Ayesha tumhari beti mujhe ghoor rahi hai,' she told Ayesha,

'tumhe kya, wo arjun sir ko bhi ghurti hai, bas ek rathore sir bach gaye, God knows why,' Ayesha replied and both laughed,

Annu was getting negative vibes regarding this lady who was complaining about her to her mumma. When glares didn't work, she looked away. Sakshi left the conference room, bidding her bye, when she got a push from the back. Chotu held sakshi, before she flipped on her heels.

She looked back and found Annu giving her naughty looks, showing her teeth. Ayesha understood and instantly hit annu at her back, dragging her outside by her arm.

'kya hai annu? Agar lag jati to? Tum chup se nehi rehe sakti?' Ayesha again scolded her,

'Ayesha rehene do, its ok,' sakshi and chotu came up but Ayesha was losing it gradually,

'nehi sakshi, ye battameez hoti jaa rahi hai,' She scolded her again.

Annu was now scared of her mumma's wrath and started crying. Sakshi felt for the little beauty and glared at Ayesha. She tried to talk to annu, but she ran to rathore's cabin, and banged into rathod, who was just coming out with the SUV keys.

'Dost' she held onto his legs and hid her face, while others in the office looked at them amused. It was quite late so, not many were still present in the office, except the subordinates, who were also wrapping up to leave. Rathore looked at the smiling faces around and held on Annu. She was too reluctant to look up and cried on his legs.

Finally Sameer, scooped her up in his arms and looked at her. She was sniffing and wiping the tears from her eyes.

'kya hua?' he asked her softly,

'mummy buli..' she replied and held onto his neck.

Ayesha, sakshi and Chotu walked to them. All had a sad face. Sameer understood something had surely transpired between them and let things rest for the time being. Sakshi left with Chotu, while Ayesha walked down to the parking with Sameer and annu in his arms.

Few hours back at the Ever Green' country pub

A lady at her early thirties sat at a corner table sipping her glass of gin, with some crunchy peanuts. She was dressed in a knee length blue ethnic shady gown pairing with a pair of flat shoes. Her hair was short covering her earlobes and she had a animal skin shaded scarf around her neck. Her eyes were drawn with dark kohl pencil and the lips had a deep shade of peach. She had very less accessories, one being a cheap stone set bracelet on her right wrist and a large round shape earring.

The lady was quietly sipping her drink, occasionally closing her eyes to enjoy the sip, rolling the drink in her mouth. Her feet tapped softly with the rhythm of the slow soft music being played in the background. She would bite into one of the peanut, several times, relishing its taste and smiling at it. When her glass would empty, she would signal a waiter and he would bring another glass of the same drink.

Right at the other corner, facing her sat a young man, dressed in a simple black tshirt and pants, with a bottle of beer and a glass. He was continuously gaping at the lady who sat right at the other corner, in front of his eyes.

His senses got alerted when the lady suddenly got up and stood at the bar counter asking for two tequila shot. The newly arrived man standing beside her, politely asked her something and she smiled, nodding at the bartender. The bar tender gave her the drink she wanted and the man pushed the glass, smirking at her.

The lady invited the man to her table and both were getting very friendly, laughing and giggling in their conversation.

The lady emptied one of the shots and closed her eyes. She rested her head on the chair headrest silently.

'batao kya pata chala?' she asked softly, almost inaudible to anyone around,

'Ayesha Kapoor ki ek beti hai, aur...' the man informed,

'aur?' the lady asked, opening her eyes and leaning in front, resting her hand on the table,

'Sameer rathore uska dost,' he informed gulping down the rest of his drink,

The lady looked amused at the news. She gave a wicked smile and picked up her other shot. Gulping it down she kept down the glass. She opened her clutch and pulled out an envelope from there.

'Yeah lo, maya ke medicines khatam ho gaye, le ana, aur haan yaha, black tshirt, humpe nazar hai uski, uski nazre...' she gave a smirk and got up.

'haan bache pe nazar rakhna, uski zaroorat ho sakti hai hume,' she whispered and stepped forward.

Tumbling at the initial steps she controlled herself and walked out, holding onto her clutch and smiling at the men she passed by. She walked out and as she had expected the man in the black tshirt followed her.

The man reached the road outside but found the lady missing. She wasn't anywhere at all. The man looked around but couldn't find her. Finally he picked out his phone and dialed a number, but before he could speak on it, his face was covered and he was dragged at a dark corner of the lane. He was beaten roughly and then when he lost senses, he was thrown in front of a moving vehicle.

The man crashed with the vehicle and fell down on the road. His head was bleeding and he lay there unconscious. Few people gathered around him, within next couple of minutes his body was taken to the nearby hospital.

Sameer reached his house after dropping annu and Ayesha at their place. Though Annu was hell bend on showing him her house, but Sameer managed stating an excuse regarding the dark hour. Annu was disappointed but she was tired and exhausted too so could not plead more. She hugged Sameer tight and kissed his cheeks before turning back to her house.

Sameer was happy to be greeting so adorably and returned back home, all the while thinking about her and the case. When life gave him a reason to feel disgusted, it also gave a reason for him to smile. Annu was the only reason he was calm and happy with his otherwise tortured life.

Annu's innocent pleadings, hearty smiles, complains, the greeting, dost' everything was so special and adorable for him. Now he was getting addicted to her. He wanted her with him, every second of his life. Though he knew his work wouldn't allow him to spend much time with her, but he wanted to speak to her once when ever he felt uneasy. Her childish accent and matured answers would easily relieve him of the stress.

He opened his house and stepped inside. He was again back in his lonely life and the reality was even harsh than ever now. He switched the lights and sat quietly in the living room. He was exhausted and over tiredness has taken away his sleep.

He closed his eyes and rubbed his face with his palms. He leaned back on the headrest and kept looking at the ceiling. He would have slept like that, had not he heard a sound from his bedroom and he jerked straight. He stood up and clutched onto his gun. The noise had stopped.

He tiptoed softly towards his bedroom door and pushed it open, holding the gun straight up.

That's how he found her in the moonlight illuminated dark room. A silhouette of a lady sitting on the bed, leaning back on the pillow. He held the gun firm in his hand and pointed to her,

'kaun ho tum? Aur yaha kya kar rahi ho?' he barked in a stern voice.

To his surprised, she laughed. It was a known laughter. Sameer was recalling himself when she switched on the bed light. There she was clad in a satin purple night wear and wet hair, she sat on the bed with a smile curving her lips,

'sapna?'
