Hello guys!

I had written this story long back with Arjun and a little girl called Kiara. But seeing the Arjun-Anjali equation makes me want to change the name to Anjali! That would be a bit tedious and so I guess you can imagine the girl to be Anjali😊.

But I have begun a new story on Page 10,exploring the dynamics of an adult-child relationship. Do enjoy😊

.PROLOGUE

Arjun Rawte thought that he had nothing to lose. But he was wrong.

An ace super cop far from peace and prayers-burnt out and broken down-Arjun accepted the job as a bodyguard just to escape suspension and inch closer to the misson of his life.An emotionally dead,socially indifferent officer knew that nothing could pierce the hard shell he's built around himself-until the little girl he's been hired to protect somehow breaks through.But having something to care about again in making Arjun vulnerable. And when the unthinkable occurs yet again on his guard, a man on fire won't just burn ... he'll explode..

Thank you everyone for the encouraging feedback! I am ready with few parts of the story and

others would follow real soon since my attention span is low and I like to start and end things fast😉

Part 1

Rathore-Arjun,just accept it. It is just a matter of 6 months. I cannot do anything. The number of times you have broken the protocol is more than the number of clauses the protocol has! Your suspension from ETF was inevitable. You should be glad that DIG Cohelo is giving you just a temporary break.

Arjun silently drove the car. He was hearing whatever was being said,but not quite listening.

Rathore-Arjun? He may be the future PM of the country. He has received threat calls about his daughter's kidnapping. The department wants you there.

Arjun- I am not interested. My life has a purpose which does not include babysitting a 9 year old kid.

Rathore- Protecting a 9 year old kid. Sorry, but I thought that you want to fight the cowards who break the most basic rule of combat- Target the enemy,not the family. Why should she pay for her father's profession?

Arjun applied the breaks and looked at Rathore with a meaningful silence. He knew he had been hit and beaten. He muttered a "OK. Book a flight to Delhi."

Next day-Rupantar Mansion.

Mr Roy- Thank you so much ACP Arjun Rawte for accepting the job. I can now be rest assured during by out of town campaigns. I am sure you will have a wonderful time with Kiara.

Arjun raised his eyebrows as if he was doubtful of that. Just then someone ran across the room and stood before him.

"Meet Kiara,Mr Rawte. And Kiara,this is your new bodyguard"

Arjun found himself to be awkwardly standing. He was not used to being around kids. But the girl smiled and confidently put out her hands. Arjun tentatively shook it.

She looked directly into his eyes with her pristine,clear eyes. Arjun was taken aback by her audacity. His team mates, fellow officers,criminals, no one had ever dared to stare into his eyes. But here lay a pair of eyes which was not scared of him,it was inspecting him as if wanting to gauge his depth.

"Officer,this is Maria the house keeper. Feel free to contact her for whatever you need"

"Kiara-don't you want to show your new friend his room?"

"Oh yes! Come Mr..what do I call you?"-she wondered aloud as she pulled him by his hand.- "Friend?"

"Sir"-said Arjun as he withdrew his hand from her grip. " Miss Maria-tell me the directions,I can find my way".

Saying this,Arjun walked away leaving behind a lot of puzzled faces.But he did not care. These social courtesies had ceased to be a part of him long time ago.

Part 2:

Following morning-Arjun dropping Kiara to school

"Bye Maria!" Kiara happily waved as she descended the stairs. Arjun opened the car door behind for her. But she chose to sit on the front seat. Arjun shrugged his shoulders and got onto the drivers seat.

"Sir,I am so glad you came. My previous bodyguard just left suddenly and papa would not let me go to school"!-she said excitedly."He was from Nagaland."

She stared at his unresponsive face and continued- " Where are you from?"

Mumbai.

Arjun kept an eye on the rear glass. He saw a Scorpio closing up and became alert.

Where exactly in Mumbai?

"No where particular".- his attention still on the surroundings.

" What are you looking at?"-Kiara turned behind too.

"You don't need to understand. But I do. So will you please let me focus?"

It was a false alarm and the Scorpio went past them. He just hoped that his rude reply will keep off further questions. But he was not aware of who he was dealing with. Thus,few minutes later came this.

"Can't we be friends?"

"No."

"But..why?

"Look.I am paid to protect you. Not to amuse you".

"But no one would cut your salary if you could just smile and protect me".

Arjun could feel a tinge of irritation rising up and decided to just shut up and ignore the constant chattering. He had greater demons to deal with.

The same day-dinner table.

Arjun gulped his food in a hurry to avoid company. He could hear Kiara and Maria chatting in the kitchen

" So how was your first day with him?"-Maria lovingly asked.

"Difficult"-Kiara replied with a sigh.

"Oh..you will get used to him"

"Haha..I think he needs to get used to me"

"Kiara,just remember that everything happens for a reason. People do not meet randomly-we serve a purpose in each others life"

Kiara nodded understandingly.

"So,you don't like him is it?" Maria inquired.

"Not sure...its just that he is very sad".

"All of us are,dear".

Arjun stiffened up outside. He sensed that this was kid mature beyond her years. But he was not comfortable with someone trying to break into his self constructed barriers. Thus,the security at his forts also needed to be beefed up.

He left the table before she could join him for dinner.

Part 3:

Next day

Arjun drove the car at a high speed to shorten the journey. He could feel Kiara staring at him and tugging at his threads of aloofness. And then she threw a bombshell-

"Do you have a family?"

"No-"

His voice had a dangerous overtone. Kiara sensed this and did not proceed further in this direction.

She noticed the bandage on his arms and casually asked- "How did you

get hurt there?"

Arjun could feel the limits being crossed and thus could not contain himself. He roughly pulled over the car to the side and thundered-

"Why is it so difficult for you to understand that I am not your new toy. I do not have to answer your questions and it would be nice if you kept them to yourself. I am stuck here protecting an elite, spoilt kid when there are millions on the road needing attention".

He saw her eyes suddenly welling up with tears. She immediately looked away. Arjun clenched his jaws. He did not mean to hurt her but his patience was running out. He closed his eyes in exasperation. Just then he heard the door clicking. Kiara had left the car.

He jumped out of his seat and saw her running across the road. He was stunned but gathered his senses and followed her-not sure of her intentions. He could feel the panic,the fear...he remembered having a very similar sensation long long time ago.

He saw her climb up a crowded over-bridge and get lost into the see of people. He was quick to take out his gun and fire in the air to disperse the crowd. He heaved a sigh of relief when he saw her standing safe within his reach.

But she looked pale and fainted on the spot.

Arjun stood frozen.
