Perfect Two

Part 4(b)

Saakshi sighed, looking at her chocolate cake again. She was sad.. no, she was angry.
"Angry with him. For what?" Her subconscious chided. "He broke the rules. He's supposed to have chocolate cake so I can take a bite from his." She argued with herself. "But he doesn't like chocolate cake, like he mentioned. You force him. Like always." Her conscious mocked her.
Didn't it just make things worse? Saakshi groaned. She was right. She forced him.. not only to have a chocolate cake but for everything. She never asked for his opinion.. might be because, she already knew him well but still.. who was she? A mere friend of his.
There might be layers and layers of things she still didn't know about him. Arjun never opened up anyway. He always liked to stay in his own little pyramid.
Yes, he wasn't like this during college days though. He'd take up fights..not that he doesn't now. He would more socialize with people.. flirt with girls or 'let' them flatter him; hard to believe now, given that he stays at least 5 feet away from any girl.
Girls went nuts over his brown skin and black orbs. Besides..Come on, who doesn't love their star quarterback?
But as the days went by, things altered.. he changed. Maybe in a good way. He got quiet, burdened with reality. "Grew up" as some people would name it. And she was a silent spectator of his journey.
She used to play in the band.. so every time, their team won because of him, she used to play a note higher.. being giddy, proud and excited, cause it's him.
They didn't know each other then. Or at least, he didn't. She did know him well though.. Saakshi still remembered well how fast her heart used to beat every time she saw him on the hallway during first semester.
And sometimes, he'd spare a moment or two and look straight at her; making her all jumpy and startled. And those silly butterflies won't stop fluttering in her tummy. God she hated them.. still does.
Then one day, he walked into her classroom. The shock was evident on her face when he sat beside her.. he had noticed it too. That is why the first thing he said to her was neither a Hi or a compliment but something like "Are you blushing, chashmish?"
Saakshi couldn't speak for a moment or so.. she straightened her glasses and stared at their professor in a creepy way while he kept staring at her sideways. She shrugged and muttered, "Of course not! Why would I? You are not even staring at me.. funny, you never look at me. Well, not true, sometimes you do.. I've noticed!"
She bit her tongue before she totally put her foot in her mouth and resumed her scribbling only to realize that he was holding her pen. She could feel the heat radiating from her face and.. he? He was grinning, spinning her pen. Saakshi felt snubbed; for one, he was making her nervous and two, she just made a fool of herself. "Having fun, are we?" She snapped and snatched her pen from his hand.
His grin had gotten bigger. "Very" came his smug reply while she rolled her eyes.
Yeah, not the bestest first "talk", but things got only better as well as baffling for her.
He would show up in the library with math homework and plead her to help him which she'd do anyways. She wasn't sure when she was his official tutor and those library tuitions shifted to Friday nights.
Saakshi would be lying if she said she didn't have a crush on her star quarterback. She did.. but when they became friends and she started knowing him better.. maybe she realized it was never meant to be. So she got over those prickly feelings, or that's what she liked to believe. Arjun was her bestfriend..her family and there's nothing more than platonic love between them.
But then again, when did this badtameez dil ever listen to anyone?
She saw him struggling.. fighting for a better future and then succeeding.. and she was proud of him.
And she was happy that no matter what transpired, he never let her go.. he never let anything come between them. Now that she was thinking, that is why his mere comment hurt her so much. She was used to his pampering..she was used to him.
There was this pattern between them that she was so used to. Now that it was faltering, she felt edgy. She was confused in so many ways.

Arjun found her fiddling with the chocolate cake, sitting in a table alone near the bar. Others were busy chitchatting around her but she paid no attention to them. Judging by the looks on her face, he knew she was lost in her own little world of misery.
Oh, how well he knew his Miss Anand.
Saakshi didn't even realize when the seat next to hers were occupied by none other than the tormentor of her thoughts. Arjun faked a smile at other people who were now moving to this table.
He slid the red velvet cake infront of her and tugged on the chocolate cake plate.. causing her to come back. She gripped on the plate out of an impulse and stared at him. He blinked, motioning her to calm down as it's only him and tugged again.
Saakshi flared up and gripped the plate harder. "Kya hai?" she shot. Arjun chuckled at the childish angry voice of hers that he knew well. "Cake khane de." He shrugged, digging his fork into the cake. He knew well, this informal tone of his always worked.
Saakshi glared at him and snarled, "Par tujhe toh chocolate cake nehi pasand na?""Haan, par what to do? Itni saal kha kha k aadat jo ho gaya hai. Baki kuch hazam nehi hota." He shrugged and kept eating.
"Par Aadato ki gulami karne ki Aadat toh Mr Rawte ko nehi hai na?" Saakshi teased him and Arjun grinned at her, sensing her loosening up already.
He offered her a bite but she looked away.. "Saakshi.. nautanki bandh kar." He chided teasingly. "moti toh already hai hi, thodi aur khaane se kuch nehi hoga." Saakshi smacked him hard on his chest and opened her mouth to yell the day light out of him for calling her a nautanki and Fat!! But he was Arjun Rawte..he grabbed her hand and took the chance to fed her the cake instead; shutting her up instantly. Yes, he knew his way around her.

Saakshi pouted but then got lost in the chocolate cake. That cake tasted so good.. or was it because it was from his fork?
And for a moment or so, everything went normal as Saakshi would call it. They were joking..teasing each other and shoving each other out of the way to have the last bite.Ah so perfect!
Arjun had been in pure bliss.. with her of course. Forgetting everything.. forgetting that she's no longer his to hold.
A pair of piercing blue flashed on the side and he looked up to find a grinning face. She winked and pointed towards him and Saakshi, mouthing a "perfect"; then she walked away, sipping on her wine.
Then it strikes him.. he excused himself and tried to follow her but no luck. By then, she had somehow disappeared. Arjun groaned and turned back to find his seat being occupied by Sid.
Maybe, even Sid had felt the death glare so he stood up immediately and said, "Hey man! Sorry.. I took your seat. Couldn't stay away from my beautiful lady." Sid kissed her knuckles softly and Saakshi let out a nervous smile, switching her eyes from Sid to Mr Volcano AKA Mr Rawte.
Arjun grabbed a chair from a nearby table and scooted in between Sid and Saakshi; giving them both an innocent smile while they gaped at him. Sid sat down with a thud.
Arjun resumed eating and pretended like nothing happened. He was totally ignoring Sid and even blocking his attempt to talk to Saakshi.
Saakshi, trapped between two men, stayed quiet.. occasionally, nodding to them. Arjun's phone beeped and he saw a text from her.
"Wah mere tiger. I really liked what you did there. laage raho"
Arjun frowned at the text, not getting what she meant. She probably meant him sitting between the newly brewed couple, Arjun felt his cheeks getting warmer. Damn you T! He looked around but couldn't find her.
"Where are you?" He texted back and then saw Saakshi scrutinizing him. She raised a brow at his phone as if asking who that was. Arjun shrugged and Saakshi felt a ping in her stomach. He was definitely hiding something. Not wanting to create a scene, she stayed quiet and noticed Siam taking the empty seat beside her with his guitar. He was that hipster kinda guy who carried his guitar everywhere even if he's going to the bathroom.
Why? No body knows.
Saakshi grinned remembering something. She leaned on his side and murmured, "Vaise I haven't forgiven you yet."
