CHAPTER 14 - Part 1

The day after ETF's return from the island:

The entire ETF team, except Chotu, was working on the reports of the resort case in their conference room.

Shree and Riya sat together working on something, while Rathore and Arjun were checking the reports that were made until then and the case file.

Chotu opened the door and suddenly asked, "Riya tumhari sagaai hogayi hain aur tumne hamein bataya bhi nahin?"

Riya shocked looked up once and then like a reflex action turned towards Arjun. A shocked Arjun was already looking at her, while Shree and Rathore were looking at Chotu, the person who just spoke.

"Kya? Kab?" Shree asked, rather yelled. Rathore only raised his eyebrows at her.

Riya then turned away from Arjun, looked at everybody and said, "Mujhe bhi nahin pata," with a perplexed expression on her face.

"Jhoot mat bolo Riya!" Chotu said.

She raised her left hand, showed it to Chotu and asked, "Tumhe koi sagai ki anghuti dikhayi derahi hain? Nahin na? Tho nahin hua hain."

"Tho phir woh admi kaun hain?" Chotu asked.

"Kaunsa aadmi?" Riya asked now irritated. Arjun was equally irritated, for reasons unknown to him.

"Niche khada hain aur keh raha hain tera mangetar hain. Koi Anurag naam hain uska," he said.

Riya's face paled a little, "Kya? Woh yahaan? Sir, excuse me."

She just walked out of the ETF room in a hurry.

Arjun returned to his file, his concentration still on Riya.

Downstairs:

"Hey Riya! So good to see you!" Anurag said and hugged Riya. Riya hugged him back.

"So good to see you too," she said, "Lekin tum mere office mein kya kar rahe ho? And kya kaha tumne Chotu se?"

"That's 'Chotu'?" Anurag said widening his eyes.

"No jokes!" she said firmly, "You didn't answer my question Anurag," she said folding her hands.

"Sach hi tho hain. Sagaai ki preparations shuru hone hi waale hain," he said seriously.

"Lekin maine abhi tak haan nahin kaha hain Anurag!" Riya said even more seriously.

"Tho kehdo Riya. How much more will you make me wait? That's not fair you know? Two years is so long!" he said.

"Lekin Anu.."

"Tumhare paas aur koi reason hain mujhe na kehne ke liye? We were really good friends for four years. Pata nahin kya ho gaya hain tumhe ab!" Anurag said taking Riya's hand into his. She retrieved her hand immediately.

"We were good friends, that's it. Nothing more than that. And I.." she paused shook her head and then said, "Chaachi ne mujhse baat ki. Keh rahi thi ki uncle, business aur hamari shaadi ko link kar rahe hain. Agar woh Chachaji ko help karna hi chahte hain tho ye sab kyun? Jab tak Dadaji zinda the tab tak tho unhe koi security ki zaroorat nahin padi. Tho ab kyun?"

"It's a thousand crore business deal!!! Your Dadaji's presence itself was the biggest security Riya! Dad can't trust you Chachaji just like that. Aur tum 'Sidhaanth Mukherjee' ki beti ho, koi aam ladki nahin. Agar tum hamari ghar ki bahu banogi tho usse zyada plus kya hoga? Dekho Riya ye pyaar vyaar se dad ko koi matlab nahin hain. Lekin main tumse bahut pyaar karta hoon. Mujhe sirf usse matlab hain. I hope you understand. You are a wise girl Riya. You know what's good for our families," he said.

"Lekin.."

"No Riya. Think peacefully. Tumhare paas zyada se zyada pandrah dinon ka waqt hain. Uske baad bhagvaan hi jaane tumhare Chacha aur unke business ka kya hoga. I'll call you back," he said casually and left, leaving Riya with no other choice. But she was determined to say no! She would look for other ways of helping her chachaji. But how?

Riya quietly walked back into the conference room and sat in her place.

Arjun turned towards Rathore. Rathore took the cue and asked Riya, "Riya, are you fine? Kaun tha woh aadmi?"

"I'm fine sir. Anurag Sengupta, a really close friend of the family," Riya said.

"Ek minute! Anurag Sengupta? You don't mean the son of the 'Mukund Sengupta'," Shree asked with complete disbelief. Riya hesitated, she didn't want to reveal her family's background or their status in the society. She cursed herself for saying Anurag's complete name.

"No," she lied.

"Sach bolo Riya. Wahi hain na?"

"Haan wahin hain," she said and got busy with her work.

"Bloody hell! He owns the entire Sengupta Group of Companies! They are like the Ambanis of West Bengal! Filthy rich! Aur woh tera mangetar hain?" Shree was literally shouting.

"Woh mera mangetar nahin hain. And Shree, don't waste the office hours, get back to work. Hum baad mein baat karenge," she tried to shove the topic away.

"Lekin Ri.."

"Suna nahin tumne Shree? Time waste mat karo!" Arjun was super pissed now. First, all the mess with Riya's mangetar and now, discussing how filthy rich he was!

"Yes sir," Shree said and got back to his work.

That evening, when they had finally finished the paper work:

"Tum kal se das din sick leave le lo Shree. You can't work like this. Doctors bhi keh rahe hain na ki ye jaldi hi theek ho jayega. A temporary replacement has been arranged too," Rathore told Shree.

"Yes, sir."

"Chotu, Shree aur Riya ka kaam khatam hote hi tum un dono ko unke ghar choddo," Rathore said as he and Arjun walked out of the office.

They were about to get into the SUV when Rathore received a call from the Commissioner. Arjun was waiting for him to finish the call.

Fifteen minutes later..

"Kya hua?" Arjun asked.

"Rafeeq. Kuch bol nahin raha hain. Trivedi ko jo pata thaw oh sab kuch ugalvadiya. Lekin ye Rafeeq, kuch bhi karo mooh nahin khol raha hain," Rathore said.

Just then Chotu came to them in a hurry, "Sir, mujhe immediately ghar pahuchna hoga. Ek emergency hain."

Rathore thought for a moment and said, "Theek hain. Tum mere saath chalo. Main tumhe jaate jaate chod dunga. Rawte?"

"Main unhe chod dunga. Tum jao," he said and turned towards Chotu, "Kahan hain woh?"

"Final mails bhej rahe hain sir," he said.

Rathore and Chotu left and Arjun went back to conference room. Just when he was about to enter he heard Shree say something that stopped him from enetering. He stood there listening..

"Tho karlo na usse shaadi. Ladka acha hain. Rich hain. Tujhse pyaar karta hain aur ye tho dono families ke liye bhi acha hoga," Shree said. He was sounding a bit angry.

"Kya?" Riya said in disbelief.

"Tum tho ye bhi keh rahi ho ki agar tum shaadi ke baad bhi kaam karogi tho usse koi problem nahin hain. Aur kya chahiye tumhe?"

"Shree, tum sab kuch jaante huye bhi.."

"Oh come on Riya! Sab kuch jaanta hoon isiliye keh raha hoon. Aur kitne din wait karogi?"

"Shree I don't love him!"

"Oh right. I forgot! Tum tho Arjun sir se pyaar karti ho na?"

Arjun was shocked! He couldn't believe his ears. He never really understood the true nature of her feelings, but now he knew.

"Shree!!!"

Her tears started flowing unknowingly.

"Na tum unse kuch kahogi aur na hi woh zindagi mein aage badhna chahenge. Almost six months Riya. Aur kitne din Riya? Ek saal? Do saal? How many more years?"

Riya stood there speechless and so was Arjun outside the door.

"Woh zindagi mein kabhi bhi shaayad aage nahin badh paayenge. Tho kya tum unke liye zindagi bhar intazaar karogi?"

Riya turned away from him, "Haan karungi." Shree was shocked.

"Karungi Shree. Jaante ho kyun? Kyunki main unse bahut pyaar karti hoon. Haan Shree, main ye bhi jaanti hoon ki main unke liye ek colleague se zyada kuch nahin hoon aur kabhi ho bhi nahin sakti. Lekin, main kya karoon? Main kisi aur ke saath.. mujshe nahin hoga! I can't Shree!" Riya couldn't control her tears now and she broke down crying.

Shree had seen her cry once before, three months back when Arjun dragged her out of the office room. He tried to console her but in vain. He teased her along with Chotu, but only Shree, apart from Riya herself, knew how much she was suffering. Moreover, he knew Riya stayed all alone. Her family, if that could be even called a family, was not in Mumbai. He wanted her to say it out, vent her grief, share it with him! They were best friends after all.

"Riya, calm down," Shree said putting his hand on her shoulder.

"Kaise Shree? Mujhse aur saha nahin jaa raha hain Shree. Tum jaante ho? You know when he appreciates me, infact agar woh mujhe daant the bhi hain na, tho main itna khush ho jaati hun na Shree, you won't believe me. Kyunki, woh mujhse baat tho kar rahe hain na..he's not giving me the silent treatment. Mere liye woh choti choti cheeze kaafi hain Shree. Isliye tum mujhe baar baar yaad mat dilao.." she couldn't speak.

"You deserve much more Riya.." Shree said, now making her sit on the chair.

"Nahin Shree. I don't have any right to interfere in his life. Lekin Shree, kabhi kabhi dar lagta hain ki main..main unke bina ji nahin paaongi!" she said and broke into fresh sobs.

Arjun walked away from the door, trying to comprehend whatever he just heard. This was so sudden for him. Even before he could accept his feelings for Riya, he came to know that Riya was indeed in love with him! He now understood the complete reason for her pain. It was him. He wasn't angry on Riya. In fact he was surprised. He realized how much Riya understood him and respected his thoughts and feelings. How she suffered, despite of her not being at fault. Yes, she wasn't at fault! He had been in love once. He remembered how falling in love with Roshni wasn't in his hands. He didn't even know, how and when he started caring for Riya. So, how can he blame her for anything?

He got into the SUV and called Shree, "ETF office main hi sone ki plan hain kya tum logon ki?"

"Sorry sir. We're coming," Shree said cutting the call.

"Feeling better now?" Shree asked Riya.

"Yeah. I needed someone to talk to Shree. I desperately needed this. Thanks a lot," she said, although she was still in pain. She didn't want to hurt Shree. She playfully hit him on the arm and was now smiling, "I'm going to miss you Shree! Jaldi se theek hoke aa jao."

"Sure Ri. Main bhi tum logon ko bahut miss karunga," he said getting up.

They came downstairs and then got into the SUV. Riya got into the passenger seat in the front and put on her seat belt. Arjun however didn't turn towards her. Shree got into the back.

He silently started the car and they left. The first place was Shree's. They dropped him there. Arjun now headed towards Riya's house. He now looked at her; she was staring out of the window. He knew she was thinking. He let her be.

More than his pain, it was Riya's pain that was hurting him now. According to Riya, she didn't exist for him. He knew how painful it was to love somebody, yet lose them. But, he couldn't tell her that she mattered to him. Why? Because he needed time to figure out things. He still had some incomplete work to finish. Sikender! He gripped the steering in anger. He calmed down immediately.

Riya suddenly became alert and then sighed. She then closed her eyes and a lone tear fell from her eyes.

Arjun worried asked her, "Riya, tum theek ho?"

Riya nodded, "Hum kabhi kabhi zindagi mein kuch aisa kar baiththe hain jisse ham chahkar bhi badal nahin sakte. Jiski vajeh se saari zindagi ekdam ulajh jaati hain! Ye zindagi itni uljhi huyi kyun hain? It used to be so simple!"

Arjun knew Riya wasn't fine right now, she was still hurting. The vehicle came to a sudden halt. Riya opened her eyes and realized that she was speaking to Arjun. She then saw that they had reached her house.

"Sorry sir. Pata nahin main kya bol rahi thi. I'm extremely sorry," she started unbuckling her seat belt and was not able to do even that. She was still in pain and was tensed that she had blurted out all that in front of Arjun.

"Riya stop!" he said and she stopped.

He removed her seat belt and when she was about to get out of the car, "Riya, ek baat kahun?"

"Yes, sir."

"Zindagi ek aisi cheez hain, jise tum agar suljhane ki koshish karogi tho aur bhi ulajh jaaogi. Riya, tum apne ateet ko nahin badal sakti. Lekin apne aaj ko bana sakti ho aur apne aane waale kal ko chun sakti ho. Woh tumhara haq hain. Aur uss haq tumse koi nahin cheen sakta. So, never regret anything you ever did or will do. Remember that." He knew he needn't explain it to her. "Iss baat ko tumse zyada aur kaun samajh sakta hain Riya? Tumne hi tho mujhe ye baat samjhaayi hain," he said to himself.

Riya was stunned. She wondered if it was the same person or someone else. A smile appeared on her lips. Arjun wasn't looking at her.

"Yes sir," she said, "Good night."

She got out of the car without waiting for his reply. She walked towards her house, lost in thought. She remebered the day she said something similar and how he had reacted. He stormed out of the door slamming the door behind him. She wasn't even talking to him then; she was talking to Shree who was in the same room with them.

How much things have changed, she wondered. So will things change for her too?

What did he mean when he said she should never regret anything she ever did?

[Author's note: I've used a beautiful song as background music, with its help I'll carry out the entire sequence. I hope you'll like this song sequence... I'll write down the lyrics and then explain what is going on in the scene. It's an experiment, I hope it works! *fingers crossed* (It is only a background music.)

She opened the door and entered the house. Sh opened the window beside the door to see him drive away. A smile appeared on her face again.

[Author's note: I summarized about ten days in a song sequence, like they often do in movies. It is an experiment. I hope it works and you like it. I'm sorry if I disappoint you. The female and male voiced lyrics are Riya's and Arjun's feelings respectively.]

[The music starts...]

"Never regret anything you ever did.." those were the words that kept ringing in her ears. She trusted his words, infact she trusted him once again. She realized her feelings for him long ago, but never accepted them because of a fear that she'll be left heart broken. But that night she did. She decided she won't be afraid anymore, because she felt wasn't doing anything wrong. And she began to feel how beautiful it is to fall in love! The next ten days were the most beautiful days of Riya's life.

[The first scene of the sequence is in the ETF office room. The entire team had just completed solving the case and Riya is with the replacement guy completing the paper work, while Arjun and Rathore are discussing another case.]

Fe: Kehte hain:
Khuda ne iss jahaan mein
Sabhi ke liye kisi na kisi ko hai banaaya
Har kisi ke liye
Tera milna hai uss rab ka ishaara
Maano mujhko banaya tere jaise hi kisi ke liye ||2||

She turned towards him, to see him busy discussing another case. She was just staring at him a smile playing on her lips and was lost in him. She was brought back to this world when Chotu snapped his fingers in front of her eyes and indicated that her work was in front of her not on Arjun sir's face. She smiled to herself.

Riya now gets up from her seat and walks towards Arjun not taking her eyes off him. She hands him over the file and stands beside him. He takes it without looking at her. He checks it out. She was so happy. She couldn't feel anything around her anymore; it was just him and only him. That fear in her was now gone. She knew she would win him over. Maybe it would take time, lots of time! But she would wait for him, forever and ever.

She had no idea where this renewed confidence came from, maybe from his words last night. They gave her undying hope.

[The scene now shifts to a hotel, where they had just solved a case.]

The were standing in a garden and Arjun stood away from all the final proceedings, like he always does. Her work was done too.. She bent down to look at the beautiful roses in the garden and then turned sideways to see Arjun standing a little away from her, lost in thought.

She felt like she was meant for him, that there was an unknown connection between them; he could read her thoughts and she could read his. Her feelings were blossoming like never before. She didn't know the destination of her path, but she decided that she would embrace it no matter what it was. Something kept telling her that she wasn't alone. He was there for her.

[The scene now shifts to the ETF SUV. Arjun was dropping Riya at her place. Since, Shree was on leave, Arjun had been dropping her home. ]

[Music..]

Arjun turned to look at Riya. She was looking outside the window with a sweet smile on her face. It was like she was elsewhere, not in this world. His world seemed so calm to him; he became oblivious to all the turbulence around him.

M: Hmm Meharbaani jaate-jaate mujh pe kar gaya
Guzarta saa lamha ek daaman bhar gaya
Tere nazaara mila, roshan sitaara mila
Taqdeer ki kashtiyon ko kinara mila

Since the day he had realized that he harbored feelings for Riya, he began to understand his feelings and slowly realized how important Riya had been for him. She had been someone who showed him the true meaning of life, directly or indirectly. Things started to seem very different to him. Roshni's memories always brought grief to him. But now, she was a beautiful memory, he would cherish his entire life and that brought nothing but peace to him. Though he hadn't completed that one final task of bringing justice her, he still felt serene. He knew he would complete that too, one day he would! It wasn't about moving on or starting afresh. It was about accepting life the way it is.

Thoughts flooded his mind as she smiled; unaware of the magic it created. He still needed time. He wasn't ready for anything yet. He decided he would let things be for now. They were beautiful just the way they were. He looked away; he looked ahead. God, now wanted him to witness a new beginning, and Arjun Suryakanth Rawte would.

Fe: Sadiyon se tarse hai jaisi zindagi ke liye
Teri saubat mein duaayein hain ussi ke liye

[Arjun and Riya are climbing up the stairs. Arjun is giving her some instructions and details about the case and Riya is noting them down. She suddenly slips and he catches her.]

Kuch toh hai tujhse raabta

She stared at him shocked. She was going to fall, but he caught her in time. She knew he would. And she would, when his step falters. It was a silent promise she made to him.

Jeene ki wajah hi yehi marna issi ke liye
Kehte hain:
Khuda ne iss jahaan mein
Sabhi ke liye kisi na kisi ko hai banaaya

I know you're eager to read about Rathore too.. but I couldn't complete the second part sorry.. This update was important too...
