He just verbally abused her in public for trying to celebrate something with her kids, disappeared for months to live with the woman who was clearly very much sexually interested in him, drove her to suicidal ideation and was about to divorce her to take care of the same woman all the while saying that dil se he would always be Upmaa's husband . Just because Upmaa is a terrible character and Vanraj is a monster, doesn't mean that he was a good or even decent partner to anyone.

Actually come to think of it, not going to court was a calculated move by both Anupama and Maaya.

Anupama may not have approached court knowing well that Kapadias will be charged of negligence (Choti Anu was ill on a summer camp and the mother never knew of it or called to check in, Maaya had mentioned of being in possession of solid saboot) and abuse leading to severe punishment to everyone's involved and the child being handed to Maaya (because they were not aware of her past) or the orphanage.

Maaya may not have approached court due to the dark past and her being a single parent still under risk of attack (like her ex-husband or someone from the past) running a risk of the child being handed over to the orphanage.
