I will repeat my original theory. Malti devi is anuj's mom. She and Anuj are working together to teach anupama a lesson about priorities and also to expose Shahs and barkha.

Reason could be many - like their parents forced them to marry the man whose husband so they hate kids born of that man OR they did not want kids but husband forced wife to have kid Or they lost career or something because of that kid Or they are removing husband or in laws anger on their kids Or woman loved another man forced to marry her hubby etc

So a mother can hate her kids very much to point of killing them

In kis Desh mein Mera Dil serial when Prem was in Canada her best friend sanjana got mad after him thinking he too loves her but Prem only took her as a friend, when sanjana propose him , he refused her which was not accepted by her so she committed suicide, Prem had guilt of his friend dying coz of him , much later a villain called rishabh entered to avenge Prem & seperate him from his love heer as he think coz of Prem sanjana committed suicide, sanjana dint died but was in coma , rishab send a wrong news to Prem about sanjana's death. Sanjana could not digest no from Prem so where was Prem wrong.

I hope makers don't bring stupidity that someone close to guruma got attached to anuj , when he refused she can't accept no , she can be anuj friend also. Malti devi might have confusion anuj harmed her
