Anu looked at the mirror adjusting her neckpiece. Their Dream was finally coming true. She knew he would look awesome all dressed up. She wondered how he would react seeing her decked up as his bride. Her heart raced at the mere thought of his scorching gaze on her. A rosy tint adorned her cheek at the thought of finally belonging to him. A knock at the door brought her out of her dreams. She opened to door to see her son standing. He looked at her and took a deep breath. He cupped her cheeks and gave a sigh. Placing a small kiss on her forehead, he said
"Mummy... You look beautiful..."
She smiled. This son of hers had always admired her. Even on the worst days he had found her beautiful.
"Thank You... After all am I not the mother of the most handsome young man?"
He nodded. A wave of sadness hit him and he blinked quickly hoping she hadn't noticed. But she had... how could she not... she was a mother after all. She raised her eyebrow and he nodded in negative. He turned away to leave when she held his hand.
"What is it...?"
He threw himself into her arms like he had always done.
"I'll miss you..."
She stroked his back and gently pushed him away from her.
"I will always be your mother..."
"I know... it's just that everything won't be the same anymore... I mean, you will now belong to Anuj ji...I definitely can't knock your door in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep. I cannot call you at 6 in the morning because my sock is missing. I cannot come running to you in the afternoon because I forgot my lunch. I cannot walk into your room in the evening just because I am upset and want to dance with you. I know... I know... Mummy I am so happy you are finally getting what you want and this is what I want too... It's just that you belonged solely to me... and now I have to share you with Anuj ji... I... Anuj is a nice guy... he loves you and he will treat you like a queen... but... but... but..."
He looked at his mother looking at him intently.
"Mummy... I..."
The tears he had controlled so hard for so many days fell quickly down through his cheeks. She immediately stretched out her hands and wiped them off. Her eyes filled up.
"Now... now... don't cry..."
"Sorry Mummy... I feel so awful... I... I really didn't want to say anything.... Mummy... did I hurt you..."
She nodded in negative and cupped his face.
"No no... its good you told me this... Now I know how much I mean to my son... Listen to me... This bond that we share will never go away... I may leave this place but I will never leave you... Remember that Disney song you used to sing to me... 'You'll be in my heart... always' always my son... you are a part of me... you have grown up so big to completely forget your needs and put my dreams before yours... You have always stood by me... You are a part of me son... How can I leave a part of me behind? You can come home anytime... I will be waiting in the evenings with your favorite snacks to listen to your day.... when days are tough you can sleep over at our house.... I will sing your favorite lullaby... just like always... I will be there son.... Nothing will change... I promise..."
"But... but..."
"She is right, Samar... Nothing will change..."
They both looked to see Anuj standing by the door. He smiled reassuringly at Samar.
"This is my promise to you... and your mother..."
Samar nodded a happy smile spreading his face.
"You are supposed to be in the hall, right?"
"Oh... I came to take my bride down... seems like she already has a chaperone..."
He turned around to leave when Samar stopped him. He took his mother's hand and placed it in Anuj's. He held both their hands in his and said
"Mummy... I think you have lost the sole rights that you had on me... I belong to both of you now..."
He pulled them into a hug.
