Chapter 10 - Payback

Unable to fully form sentences, both of them looked on as Mukku happily babbled away about this movie or that…

Dammit Mukku! Tujhe abhi hi ana tha? Anuj looked at his sister with a feigned smile.

“Waise Mujhe toh Aashiqi dekhne ka man kar raha that, lekin mujhe lagraha hai ki maybe there isn’t a chance of that so… what do you both want to watch?” Mukku said she turned on the TV and dropped herself between the two - swinging her big expectant eyes between the two confused humans sitting beside her.

She cackled internally. I know these two boring dummies would have just gone to bed. Now at least they will have a chance to talk to each other. I’ll start a romantic movie and then after some time, pretend to be tired and leave. So they will bloody talk to eachother! Mukku continued scheming, totally unaware of the plan she’d already derailed.

“Areee Mukku…” Anuj was frantically trying to figure out what he could possibly say to dissipate this sudden barrier between him successfully spending some alone time with Anu. “Bachaa, how about we watch a movie another time? Tera aaj bohot lamba din tha right? Aur main bhi bohut tired hoon…” He yawned dramatically, hoping that his strained expression conveyed to Mukku that they should put the evening to a close. Shayad, she will take pity me because Anu is leaving tomorrow and she must think I’m sad. So far what he’d got was an eye roll from his sister.

Suddenly a thought popped into Anupamaa's head, 'Anu, this is your chance. Dinner ke liye badla lene ka…;

“But Bhaiiiii….! I want to spend some more time with Anupamaa” Mukku pouted at her brother.

“Mukkuuuuu….” Would this be the one time his older brother voice was going to work on her? (no chance) He needed her to believe he was too tired and wanted tonight to end.

Before Mukku could argue back, Anupamaa grabbed her elbow to calm her, slightly leaning into her to speak to her conspiratorially, looking at Anuj with a glint in her eye, “Haan Mukku, waise lagta to hai ki tumhara bhai thak gaye hai, shayad unko movie nahi dekhni…”

Oh thank you Anu! Tumhare samjhanepe samaj jaigi and we can be alone together… Anuj’s heart jumped in excitement at Anupamaa’s maneuvering. Totally not expecting what came next…

Anupamaa’ slowly turned her head to look Anuj directly in the eyes, poking her tongue slightly into the side of her cheek she continued, “aise karte hai, Aap soh jaiye, Mukku aur mai movie dekh lete hai…” She had him…"What do you think Mukku?"

“Haaaan! Anu ye sahi hai! Bhai waise bhi you are too boring” Mukku cuddled into Anu and started babbling about what they should watch. The allure of spending time with Anu suddenly derailing Mukku's plan.

Huh?! Anu WHAT? Anuj’s eyes widened in complete shock.

“Errrrr” Anuj tried to maintain his calm while frantically trying to get a handle on the situation. Anuuuuu!?

Anupamaa’s eyes sparkled with a challenge, fully conveying her intentions to Anuj. Who was clearly suffering under the threat of losing even a second of time spent with his love.

His eyes, and his fear, charmed her more than she expected… Haye Anu, ye tune kya kia. Pagal Chokri. Bechareyee kitna pareshaan lagrahe hai.

If she was honest, she really didn’t have the heart to actually go through with her plan of making him suffer. His heart, his love, his sincerity had taken care of that…

Haaan to kya hua, mai thora sa toh tang kar sakti hoon. Unhone kitna tang kia khaate waqt…

She just looked back at him with her eyes wide in innocence, clearly throwing down a challenge. One she secretly hoped he’d win. She was as desperate to spend every moment with him as he was.

“Bhai why do you look like a fish?” Mukku swiveled her head to look at her ridiculous brother who couldn’t do much more than open and close his mouth. Laughing at his behaviour.

Pulling his glasses away into his hands to clean to give him a moment to gather his thoughts, he cleared his throat.

Oh, Bhaiiii! He’s so cute. Clearly he doesn’t want to leave Anu too. Phir baith jao na bhai! But I can’t let him of the hook that easy... Switching her eyes to mock concern, Mukku put a hand on his arm, peering at him with all the innocence she would muster, “Waise bhai, maybe Anupamaa is right. You do look tired. Dheko kaise a jeep muh banaraheo. Why don’t you take a rest? Anu and I can chill”

Now even Mukku was torturing him. Seriously! What was he going to do with these two firecracker women in his life!?

Unsure how exactly to play this, he laughed nervously, “Nahi nahi, it’s ok. Agar tum dono dekhna chaahte ho, I… I can... also watch” he had to pull this back somehow while he formulated his counter attack.

Anu gently placed her hand over Mukku’s, which was still placed on his in mock concern, looking at him, enjoying this too much she decided to push it a bit further “Are you sure Anuj? Agar apse hoga nahi, toh it’s ok?” Shifting her eyes to Mukku, trying to hold back her laughter, she said “waise bhi Mukku, tumhara bhai se aisi ummeed nahi rakhni chahie. Haina woh Boring Kapadia…” both women dissolved in giggles.

Anuj, with a slight pout on his face, muttered, “haan, haslo haslo”. Why did this all sound like all the times Anu had called his Bholuraam?

Just about catching their breaths, Mukku said, “Haan, waise Bhai you are so BORING” she stuck her tongue out at him once more. Pretending to play with her fingernails, giving him a sideways glance, she asked in a haughty manner, “you tell us, why should we let you watch a movie with us?” Giving a sideways glance to Anu, who was still laughing, Mukku gave her a quick wink.

“Mukku ki Bacchi!” Pouncing on his sister, he grabbed her ear and twisted it slightly and started to tickle his cartoon of a sister, “Mujhe Itna tang kar rahi hai, main tujhe nahi chorunga!”

“Aaahhhh Bhai…” Mukku struggled away from her brother both of them just started attacking each other with tickles and pokes, their sibling bond taking its most childish face. “Tu rukh main tujhe batata hoon”

Anupamaa looked at the two warring siblings just inches from her on the couch as they continued to play fight. She smiled at the youthful innocence of their bond, their most precious relationship, and smiled. Taking a moment to thank her Kanhaaji for bringing such people into her life, and asked for their protection, doing her habitual “thu thu thu” she continued laughing and tried to interject as their struggle continued, “Are aap dono bache hain kya? Lag jayegi! Bas karo. Aap dono toh Pakhi aur Samar sey bhi zada lardte hai!” her tone was far from serious, savoring it, acutely aware that she’d miss these moments from tomorrow.

Anuj, who finally had Mukku in an immovable, but painless lock said, “Haan ab pooch Mukku ki bacchi, ab bol”

Mukku continued to struggle against Anuj’s grip and decided to try another route, “Anuuuuu dekho na! Bhai mujhe tang kar raha hai!” she looked grumpily at her brother, “Waise bhi… Anu ne bhi aapko boring bulaya, I was just playing along! Aap Anu ko aise pakro, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. Mujhe chooorooooo”. Mukku continued to struggle.

Anupamaa, suddenly hot, looked down, hiding a blush, very much reminded of how we had held her just before… Trying to hold it together herself now.

It’s not like Mukku was wrong. She really wouldn’t mind…

Trying to keep a straight face she said, “erm… Haaan, haan Anuj aap Mukku ko choriye ne? Baas” gently cajoling him with her eyes, offering a truce.

Anuj looked at his sister, mostly unaware of the sudden Havoc in Anupamaa’s mind, gently letting go of his struggling captive “Haan, theek hai, but you have to behave now! Waise tu theek hai na? Lagi toh nahi” he immediately softened as he checked her wrists and made sure she was actually ok.

Anu, hot flare-up forgotten momentarily, looked on with great affection as the warring siblings suddenly melted, checking each other for damage.

Not that it lasted, as soon as he was satisfied with Mukku’s state he looked directly at Anu, eyes searing her…

Oh yes, the heat was back. Control Anu...

“Aur Anu, tumhe toh mai dekh loonga”. His simple words depicted the shift in their relationship, if only to them. There has been a time when Mukku had asked him to pull Anu’s ear for their childish hopscotch plan in the office car park. Then, he had no right to do so. But now, the heat in eyes spoke of the change. As if saying, ab mujhe tumpeh bhi Haq hai. He would have his revenge for her antics.

Now it was Anu who felt like a fish. She quickly stopped herself from just looking at him, opening and closing her mouth. She blushed profusely and smiled softly.

Mukku watched the subtle exchange, reading it for their usual cute flirting, felt a pang in her heart. Why won’t they just talk to each other and be together?!

Sighing internally, she thought to push them a bit, “Oyeee hoyeeeee” her eyes shifting between the two cuties, “lagta hai ki shayad aaj Ashiqui dekhne ko mil jaigi!”

Anuj, slightly shaken out of his reverie of starting at Anu - who just continued to blush as her eyes danced - cleared his throat once more. Directing Mukku towards the inevitable plan for the night, he asked, hoping to distract his sister, “

Erm… ok then… so what movie shall we watch?” For the sake of their rouse, he would have to put his plans on hold. At At least for now.
