Are they from Maganlal Dresswallah?

So says make-up guru Clint Fernandes about Juhi Parmar's not-so-fashionable dresses

Red Outfit
Why does a pretty girl like her want to wear this strange 'wannabe kurta'? It's a bit Spanish-meet-Indian which has turned out to be rather lost in translation. Juhi, one does not need to wear churidars everywhere....!

Yellow Frill kurta
This is the best example of the 'Death of Fashion'. The fabrics used seem interesting … but the garment is a disaster! The strangely cut lining just adds to it. She should have just borrowed clothes from the dancers behind her, silver pants with a black T-shirt and she would look just great.

Blue/black Kurta
I am sure she got it from Maganlal Dresswallah. This is what one wears when one does a period role in a film or play, not really on national television as a hostess! Looks like this pretty lady prefers theatrical costumes to regular clothes.

Juhi reacts: "My producers are leaving no stones unturned to give me the best possible look on screen. They have already employed designers for this. Individual opinions may disagree over fashion; but on the whole I've got good response for my outfits. However, I respect their comments."

"From acting to anchoring"

Juhi Parmar is hot these days. Anyone in her place would be, too. Kumkum (as she is popularly known) is going great in the serial by the same name. Now she is paired alongside Annu Kapoor for the song-based game show on Star One's Antakshari The Great Challenge.

When asked about this new avatar, an elated Juhi says, "I am taking up something different from what I've been doing till now . At the moment I'm totally preparing for it. The production house has set in place a training course and I am being coached under Pandit Satyanarayan Murthy to understand the finer nuances of music."

An ecstatic Juhi remarks, "I enjoy acting, but nothing feels better than being able to interact with a live audience…that too on a grandeur platform like Antakshari, where I get to share the stage with none other than the Annu Kapoor. This will be my first ever anchoring stint and I am very thrilled. As far as music goes, my friends call me a musical encyclopedia as I know many songs, but I am brushing up my musical knowledge for the show to make sure I do a great job!".

She adds, "I have always been a fan of this show right since my school days and I am very excited to be co-hosting it with Annuji." And what about the expectations, does it weight her down, given the fact that she has been paired with Annu Kapoor who is an experienced hand in the show and also that Antakshari has always spelt success.

Juhi is quick to add, "Expectations never bother me. I believe in doing my best and accepting the outcome. It will be my strategy for this show too. Annuji has been extremely cooperative and has helped me benefit from his vast experience about the show" Talk about being nervous hosting a musical show for the first time, the actor says, "I have always encouraged nervousness.

In fact I make it a point to be nervous because it propels you to give a better performance every time. Yes, I am nervous about the show and the response to my performance, but that's perfectly fine with me. I prefer to be nervous than overconfident."

Juhi Parmar's ensembles on Antakshari span two extreme ends of the style spectrum
This Used To Be A Fish Net. Haven't Heard Of Recyling? Can I Play Umrao Jaan Too? I Not Only Move Like Govinda, I Dress Up Like Him Too!

Juhi Parmar's costumes on Star One's Antakshari have been called everything from Maganlal Dresswala's designs to something extras would wear on the show.

So we decided to speak to Reza Sharifi, the designer responsible for her ensembles, on his reaction to all the brickbats.

How long have you been working on the costumes for Antakshari?

I've been on the show since day one. In fact, I even did the clothes for the promo shoot.

However, I was missing from the scene for the third and fourth episode since there was a wedding in my family. During that period, Neeta Lulla and another woman took over.

How did you react to the criticism for the costumes?

I don't appreciate praise, nor do I appreciate negative comments. I am here to make Juhi look as good as possible. I've worked with her before and we share a good rapport.

In fact, I haven't experimented much or given her Western outfits because she's famous for Indian wear and that's what the audience is comfortable watching her in.

Juhi is dressed conservatively because producer Gajendra Singh has tremendous family values and believes that Antakshari is a family show.

Do I need to make Juhi wear figure-hugging, revealing outfits so that people like her clothes? I firmly disagree.

What do you think of the outfits made by other designers?

I don't want to comment on that, but it isn't fair to put the blame for some tacky outfits on me. I think they should check who designed those outfits before making nasty comments.

Juhi storms out of Antakshari

She can't sing off the same old hymn sheet as Annu Kapoor

Ashwini Deshmukh

It seems things are not going smooth between Annu Kapoor and Juhi Parmar, the hosts of Zee TV's Antakshari. According to the grapevine, the two anchors can't stand see eye to eye and the actress was so upset while shooting the latest episode (to be aired on Saturday) that she walked out of the sets without completing the shooting. Guest Richa Sharma, immediately stepped into Juhi's shoes and helped Annu complete the episode.

Director Gajendra Singh confirms the news. He recalls, "There was indeed a big fight on the show and Juhi walked out, leaving the show mid-way. I had no other option but to request Richa Sharma, who was present there as a guest to co-host the show with Annuji."

Annu Kapoor with Juhi Parmar in Antakshari
It all started when Annuji put forth a simple question in a tricky way, 'A song sung by R D Burman's saali (sister-in-law)' and no one amongst the contestants and the audiences could answer it. "When someone from the audience complained of asking a difficult question, Annuji got upset and spoke of how ignorant the new generation was and how could they not know about Lataji," says Singh. "The whole conflict between the two is about the old and new generation. Annuji feels old is gold while Juhi insists that new technology and artists have taken our country on a global footing," he adds.

When contacted, Annu Kapoor said jokingly, "It all was very shocking. I commented something in general about the new generation but she (Juhi) took it personally. She is a kid, roothi hai toh mana bhi lenge."

Annu Kapoor has always been the face of Antakshari a show that's been going on for the last 12 years. There hasn't been trouble between former hostess of the eponymous show such as Durga Jasraj, Pallavi Joshi and Renuka Shahane, but with Juhi Parmar his equation is turbulent. "Juhi is a super confident young girl and Annu Kapoor is now feeling and showing his age, which is 51. She's rather quick while age has slowed him down a bit," says our source.

On being questioned about his favourite co-host, Annu Kapoor says, "Pallavi and Renuka were excellent actresses and very good singers also. Thay had a good command over language, so does Juhi. But one shouldn't compare them. They all have different qualities." he adds.

Our source also adds, "Annu does not want to be overshadowed on the show. His extensive knowledge of ragas and music gharanas is a given but Juhi's charm, ready wit and fearlessness are something he's never faced before. Pallavi Joshi always stuck to her job, Renuka Shahane was a woolly-baa-lamb but Juhi is a total bindaas girl."

In the recent shoots, the crew openly admits that Annu is very insecure about Juhi and the tension shows even on the show where both of them desperately try to behave as if they are comfortable with one another.

So is the show's future in question as one of the hosts has parted ways? Says Gajendra, "I am going to speak to the two of them individually and I hope it all works out fine and we can shoot the next episode."

April Fool banaya!

Juhi Parmar walks out of the sets of Antakshari — The Great Challenge. But that's just a prank she was playing!

Tera Gussa, Oye Hoye! Juhi Parmar and Annu Kapoor in Antakshari
It seemed like an ordinary day of shoot on the sets of Star One's Antakshari—The Great Challenge.

However, Wednesday afternoon was anything but ordinary. In the middle of a shot, Juhi Parmar staged a walk out from the sets.

She was fuming with rage over something co-anchor Annu Kapoor had said.

The audience was shocked to see an otherwise docile Juhi locking herself up in her vanity van.

A source reveals, "It was quite a sight to see Juhi walk out. She was saying things like 'Annuji should learn to respect his juniors and behave more cordially.

Just because he's a senior doesn't mean he can disrespect juniors'."

After her walkout singer Richa Sharma took the responsibility of hosting the show and continued.

The audience was still wondering why Juhi had walked out and the reason behind her getting so annoyed.

However, as soon as Richa took over the stage and was about to start, Juhi returned with a smile on her face to reveal the whole fight was staged and it was an April Fool prank they had played on the audience.

This special episode will be telecast on Sunday at 8 pm which incidentally is April Fool's Day

Annu Kapur, the face of Antakshari for the last 13 years, is well-known for his deep knowledge of classical as well as Hindi film music. Known to dominate his co-hosts and the entire show he is a difficult man to deal with. He's allegedly had problems with his co-hosts such as Renuka Shahane and Pallavi Joshi in the past. So it's not surprising that he would try the same stunts this time too. However his current co-host Juhi Parmar refused to tolerate Annu's dominating attitude as was witnessed in the Saturday night episode of Antakshari. Juhi walked out of the stage, leaving Annu Kapur in a state of shock. Juhi did not return to complete the episode and guest Richa Sharma had to step into Juhi's shoes and help Annu complete the remaining portion of the Saturday night show.

So what really went wrong? Had Annu gone too far this time? Did she really want to put Annu in his place? "Not really. Nothing has gone wrong and all is well between us. I don't feel inhibited by his knowledge and presence and I don't see him as a threat to my performance. In fact, we both complement each other very well. His knowledge of old Hindi film music is very good and I am good at new songs. I am a very confident person and no one can dominate me," says Juhi.

Then why did Juhi leave the stage in a huff in the middle of the episode? "Well, it was an April fool joke," laughs Juhi, adding, "and a good creative idea decided by the channel and producer. I have not quit the show and I will return in the Sunday night episode." But she will not return at the beginning of the episode. "There will be some suspense and people will wonder whether I will be back or not. Even Annu will behave as if I have left the show for good. I will come back after the first segment and then it will be revealed that it was an April fool joke," she laughs again.

Antakshari is Juhi's first stint at anchoring and she says she is having a great time. "It's a brilliant show and I have really enjoyed my job over the past two months. I have been acting since the past eight years and have played different characters. But this is an entirely different and absorbing experience for me. When I accepted it I knew I was in for some fantastic experience," gushes the actress who is now known by her real name besides Kumkum, the protagonist of the popular afternoon soap of the same name. "Now people know the real Juhi and not only as the lead character of Kumkum," she adds.

'I don't design my clothes'

Juhi Parmar on her dress sense in Antakshari that's come in for a lot of flak

SUBHASH K JHA

Loads of comments have been made about actress Juhi Parmar's dress sense on Antakshari. In fact, she's received a lot of flak for her clothes, which critics say are rather garish. But Juhi's beyond caring. "I don't have to get worried about the comments on my clothes. I don't design them. I only wear them. If you ask me, I'm very happy with the clothes that Reza has been designing for me. I agree for one week when another designer had taken over the clothes were bad. Reza was busy and we had to get another designer in for a week. What to do? Sometimes the clothes turn out to be quite different from the way they are described to you. By the time I realised that the clothes weren't working for me, it was too late. We work within tight deadlines. These things happen. We just went ahead and recorded the episodes in my bad clothes. That's okay. Hota hai. The show must go on air." There's also speculation about her wavering rapport with co-anchor Anu Kapoor. They seem infinitely removed from each other in age, taste and sensibility. "That's the fun part," says Juhi. "Anuji knows everything about vintage film songs. I don't know that much about old songs. But I know every single contemporary film song by heart, whereas Anuji doesn't even know the lyrics of new songs. So we've stuck a really neat balance between us. We never clash. Yes, there's an age difference. But it works to the show's advantage."

Annu Kapoor: No smoking

Annu Kapoor has completed 100 days of not smoking.

As reported 'Annu kicks butt' (HiTLIST, March 2) the anchor of Star One's Antakshari — The Great Challenge has given up smoking completely.

He says, "I have already crossed the 50-mark and have realised that the older we grow the more careful we need to be.

I think smoking is terrible and one needs to get rid of the habit as soon as possible."

Better late than never, we say.

Hey Anurag, he can be your poster boy for No Smoking!
