I agree the scene is important. It shows how different positions of Ren and Shoutaro are in Kyoko's life now. But whatever way Shou was taking, it was half-hearted. Recently only I read a discussion on mangafox, and I quite agree with that one regarding Shoutaro.
I will quote from there.. Something Vampirecat said which didn't leave my senses, and was really true about Shoutaro.
"He was offering his presence but not real warmth. He was okay with being there so that she wouldn't cry alone, but that was all he felt like doing. He didn't want to hug her nor to console her. So when she didn't jump to take advantage of his minimal benevolence, it was natural that he quickly switched to riling her up."
Regarding Ren, I am jumping now! I really feel next chapter will be humongous development, and I can't wait!
