It was an evening the two Voice Of India (VOI) finalists won't forget in a hurry. On Monday evening, Lata Mangeshkar invited VOI finalists Harshit Saxena and Ishmeet Singh to her residence. The informal chat lasted for nearly an hour… quite a long chat for the otherwise reclusive artiste.
Bring in the new
"They're very talented boys, and the reason why I've agreed to attend the finals is because of their enthusiasm and dedication," says the Nightingale who has recently released two non-film albums of Ghazals and Ganpati bhajans composed by her protg Mayuresh Pai. Lata is steering away from film songs these days. She says only new talents that are well versed in classical music can bring much-needed change in the industry. She went on to say, "It's always good to encourage new talent. I've supported talented composers and singers all my career."
When asked about his reaction, Ishmeet said, "Lata didi made us sit close to her and sing her favourite songs. She served us samosas, joked, laughed and made us feel comfortable." VOI producer Gajendra Singh, "They sat for more than a hour with India's most amazing singer, sang for her, while she regaled them with her childlike enthusiasm."
Real challenge
She selected Mere naina sawan bhadow, Musafir ho yaaron (Kishore) and Tere mere sapne and Man re tu kahe na dheer (Mohd Rafi) for Ishmeet and Harshit to sing. Laughs Mangeshkar, "We had a gala time. They did a fine job of the songs I picked out. But the real challenge for these talented singers is to sing original songs."
Along with doing what she calls the "heartbreaking job" of choosing one of the two as the winner at the VOI finals on November 24, Lataji will also present Ishmeet and Harshit with diamond and gold hand-made watches.
