This was a comeback episode for some and 'someone ate the bread crumbs I left to mark a trail' episode for others. Sumitra and Ishmeet made a return appearance with this one. Irfan and Abhilasha are clearly looking for their bread crumbs.

Sumitra was really good yesterday. Again, not a serious departure from her usual genre, but she has learnt to modulate her voice at both ends and to make smooth transitions in either directions. On both days this weekend, no sqeaky falsetto was in evidence. Good for her! A

Priyani will remain one of the universe's mysteries to me. She missed sur a great deal and yet got rave reviews all around. Alka was the only nay-sayer and even then it was prefaced by how fantastic she is. What people hear, I really do not. I cannot wait for her to finish singing. Priyani is going to win and I will still not understand why at that point. C+

Toshi was good yesterday. I still find him irritating but his singing was far better than it usually is. His sur and taal were fine and while, unlike the Bhatts, I do not find people flinging themselves around the stage appealing, I will concede he did it with no great detriment to his singing performance. Good show, Toshi! A

Some alien read my comments yesterday and either took over Ishmeet's body or energized him seriously. He was unbelievable. I agree with Mahesh Bhatt that it does not matter whether he sounds like Kunal Ganjawala. His spin on the song worked equally well, and he did not violate the essence of the song. The MDs are territorial about tunes changing (naturally), but I think what Ishmeet did was to infuse the song with his presence not impose himself on it violently. A+ (Many more such surprises, please!)

I was struck by Arshpreet today. Not as much by her singing but the silence of her body language. What do I mean? Arshpreet has been remarkable in singing every kind of song, remarkably well. Each departure has invited one comment from the MDs--this is not her genre. They seem to want her to sing only Punjabi and Punjabi folk-based tunes. Today, Arshpreet's song choice reflected that. And this very quiet person showed in her own way that she was just going with the flow however silly she thought it. Her body language screamed: yeah, whatever, I am here to win and I can do what I like later. I have seldom seen a more expressive silence on stage. I agree with Arshpreet: to stereotype singers who are showing they are versatile is really .... narrow-minded, unimaginative.

Arshpreet sang competently. She was bored with the song. Technically, she was flawless and she did not shortchange the song, but where was the Arshpreet of Justuju jiski thi and Que sera sera? A- (B+)

Irfan was man-in-a-hurry and man-in-a-veri (Tamil for frenzy) last night. The result was painful. The passion that was missing in Prantik's 'Ye dil deewana' was violently splashed around in a song that Arindam sang beautifully a couple of months ago. I don't care what comments he got; he was off-sur, ahead of taal and just flailing about last night. Irfan, where are you? What happened? C+

Harshit could have been better. Harshit's presence is growing on me but I remain dissatisfied with his singing. Yesterday, there were a couple of sur and taal slips, but that is not the major problem. Everything about his singing shows a timidity, a fear of pushing boundaries, of testing himself, that makes me despair. He commented a great deal on Prantika's timidity but Prantika was very courageous when it came to singing. If Harshit doesn't try and find that place where he can really push himself to be the best he can, he will be an also-ran. B+ (he should be a B technically, but I want to make this an encouraging grade today).

Abhilasha is the other fraidy cat here. She is a very lucky young lady and deserved a little scare today. There are no excuses on stage and seventeen is not that young. This is the dead-serious stretch of this competition and she needs to get over stage-fright or whatever it is that bothers her. I thought all the judges were very kind to her but how long will voters be? Today, the Toshis and Ishmeets were clearly auditioning for Vishesh Films and Abhilasha should have been too. I thought Pooja Bhatt had exactly the right reaction at the end, and Abhilasha who hides behind Sumitra a lot, needs to learn how to overcome every anxiety (and Sumitra's anxiety does show when she is listening to comments) and do what she can do. I am not going to grade her today.

Mirande was very, very good. Her throat is still not well, but you could scarcely tell from the way she sang. Her 'Tinka Tinka' sounded like a page from a diary, a poem about a state of mind. Wonderful! This should be Abhilasha's poster-girl: A+.

Abhaas was almost himself. Just some fraction short of his usual virtuosity. A

I really want a break from some of these songs. I realize I am not going to get it, but there is no harm in expressing this view, is there?

I also want to comment on the fact that the Bhatts really make good celebrity judges. They are enthusiastic, encouraging, listen very closely, speak honestly and enjoy the program.

And now we have to wait a whole week for the next program.....

I though Sumitra was great today. So was Abhaas!
Arindam sang bheegi bheegi beautifully a few weeks ago and Irfan's performance was not upto the mark.

I appreciated the guest judges comments and enthusiasm. Sometimes I felt they got carried away but its okay. 😆 Pooja was a guest judge during C2005 and showed the same enthusiasm and spirit.

My analysis on yesterday:

Sumitra-she was quite good yesterday.its not really different from what she usually sings yes it was appealing.i just think she lacked the punch a bit in "hai yeh pyar vyar pyar hai dhoka".(GRADE:A)

Priyani:priyani was not good yesterday.for some reason i dont like her voice.its a touch too shrill for me and i didnt like the song she sang yesterday as well.im not a big alka yagnik fan either so that might be the case(GRADE:B-)

Toshi:he was good but not upto the level of teri deewani or piya re he sang.he sounded a bit flat in the high pitch once or twice but rest he was okay.especially good in the antara.(GRADE:A)

Ishmeet:he was very very good and i agree with bhatt saab that he gave a diferent interpretation to the song.it wasnt like harpreet of srgmp(my fav there but he sang this song like he was reading).actually ishmeet made it sound like an innocent first love song 😆(GRADE:A+)

Ashpreet:she lacked energy.as it is all the girls barring sumitra and mirande chose bad song and this was really bad.(GRADE:C)

Irfaan:before i comment on his performance illl tell u something.in the pritam episode.irfaan was supposed to sing this song.he sang it before pritam and pritam said that this song didnt suit his voice.u can see this when u see the pritam episode again.dunno he wanted to prove something but he sang it here with disastrous results.he slipped in numerous places only the antra was a little ok.he could have selected something like awarapan banjarapan or the pakistani songs(more on that later).(GRADE:C)

Harshit:whatever anyone says i think what abhijeet said about harshit last week was true.he is getting into the kumar sanu mould and i did not like kumar sanu.fine song though and good singing.he slipped here or there though.(GRADE:A)

Abhilasha:cant rate her though she was sounding good.

Mirande:best female singer of the evening and really she showed that this song could be sung differently.her voice is different from alisha chinai but no less sensuos.she is my fav female singer in this contest.i feel there is a touch of himani in her(GRADE:A+)

Abhas:he was good but this song didnt suit him.energywise it was very good but wasnt the best yesterday.(GRADE:B+)

Two more things
the song selection could have been better.i could not understand why no one chose jaadu hai nasha hai or awarapan banjaarapan or any of the pakistani pop songs.but then our judges are dead against pakistani singers.they seem to be stuck in the 1990s

next week on 23rd july is the birthday of my fav singer in the industry kay kay(23rd august).i wish he comes on the show on one of the days or at least his songs are sung

will just comment on the singers/behavior/anything in general that stood out for me on both days

1. Ishmeet - was the best on saturday !! wonder what got into him ... he was just too good ... well beyond my expectations ... he was ok on friday too ... lent a shaan touch to the sonu nigam song which made it sound different ... there is something abt this guy that i quite like ...

2. Sumitra - wow, what restrained singing !! she did lose sur a couple of times in 'kaisi paheli', 'dil ko hazaar baar' was much better a li'l more energy cud've done wonders but we are used to so much energy from her that i didnt mind this at all 😊

3. Sonu Nigam's commments - bang on 👏 i have always maintained that he is a very very good judge, always gives correct and constructive comments, is never rude and as a bonus is just soooo cute 😛

4. The Bhatt trio - they were gud, werent they? nice comments ... maybe a bit overboard at times ... but still ... they were better judges than many others

5. Abhilasha - very dissappointing to see her like this ... want to give her one more chance ... pls pls abhilasha ... we all love you ... pls come back ...

6. Harshit and Arshpreet - why am i clubbing them ??? just like that 😛 but i thot both very equally listless on saturday ... did they hv a fight ? 😉
harshit's tum mile lacked feelings IMO ... the best rendition of this song so far remains the one by Abhijeet Sawant in II1
i think Arshpreet is bored of the Punjabi songs her mentors are making her sing time and again ... but this seems to be a perennial problem wth her team ... none of them hv ventured far from their time and tested domain ... in contrast with prithvi who are testing their team members with some very different types exposing them to harsh comments from the opp team.

P.S. - Aditi's 'Tinka Tinka' mukhda was much better IMO, but will attribute that to Mirande not being completely well yet
and again wonder why the same songs are chosen again and again ... atleast keep away from those songs that other VOI contestants have already sung!!!

I also think that a well Mirande would do more justice to 'Tinka Tinka', a song that registed with me only after Aditi's rendition.

I also wrote that Arshpreet seemed bored. Glad you picked up on it too. You are right that Prithvi is testing singers more. Does it say something about MDs not pushing singers and does it explain why we have this idea that some songs are 'Mukesh' songs, some songs are 'Sonu' songs, some are 'Sunidhi' songs. Singers are willing to try everything but MDs are intrinsically conservative. With the Agni people and the neutral judge, 'this is not your genre' is also a criticism that is made from time to time.

oh yes ... on her day, mirande is one of the best, no doubt abt that ...

arshpreet was def bored, i think it strtd with her song on friday, normally she is very comfy while singing but i saw a slight struggle on friday, she was not enjoying
herself ... and this sort of boiled over on saturday ...

and yes i agree with u on the singers v/s MDs part ... an item number and sunidhi will probably be the first one to come to anyone's mind ... a soft romantic number and its probably alka or shreya ... yes even if alka wants to sing an item number today, the MDs might not allow her to 😊
