Tonight's episode featured an "interesting" discussion on "making a song your own". Mahesh applauded Ishmeet for interpreting Bheege hont tere in his own way and giving the song a "new flavor" whereas Lalit felt the original badmaashi and naughtiness of the original was missing in Ishmeet's rendition.

Should the VOI singers stick to the original song and should they bring their own personality and interpretation to it? Should this sort of originality be encouraged or discouraged from the judges? How much should they experiment with the original?

I think it depends on how they make their presence felt. I loved Ishmeet's performance, partly for the pleasant surprise it was compared to his other recent ones, but also that it was very good.

He was himself, sincerely, not showing himself off. He infused the song with his feeling for it, did not march all over saying and this is how I would do it. He did not take liberties with the tune, taking it to places that its raga would not go, altering the taal structure.

I did not like what Irfan did to his song this week, by contrast.

I personally dont like a song being given a new interpretation... Many of these songs have been heard so many times over, I dont enjoy seeing them being sung differently specially if it is one of my favorite songs... Even in Ishmit's case, I dont think he meant to give it his own interpretation, it just happened... On some other occassions we have seen, a contestant may probably not be able to sing the song in its original flavor, or in some others they try to do too much with a song and in it loose its original charm... And the name it is given is "their interpretation of the song"...
