Performance seems to be a 'key factor' these days and a winning trend in reality shows these days...

What is your definition of performance? How important is it to win a reality show? And to be successful there-after? Can a non-performing singer survive in today's competitive scenario?

not necessarily performance, but they need to have x factor to be able to connect with the public... even the best of singers wont win unless they r able to do so... i dont think reality shows aim at genuinely making a career for aspirants in anycase... it is just a money spinning show for the channel, some excitement for viewers and gives exposure to contestants... but exposure will do nothing for them now, coz there are so many shows and so many aspirants, that before anyone seriously takes note of you, you are already gone and forgotten... most important is Luck...

Performance to me means connection, impact and the cliched 'dil ko choona' 😊
it can be done in many ways and not necessarily by prancing around ... for that as a singer you need to get the feel/mood of the song and have to put yourself in it 100% ... u need not dance to get the mood for a dance number ... dance with your voice/eyes ... if you feel good abt it others will do too ... a genuine/trained singer most often knows if he/she is performing/has performed well and the body language conveys that

Coming to reality shows, they really hve nothing to do with success thereafter.
Barring a miniscule few, i dont think it has done much for the so called winners
Next, do reality shows give us genuine/good singers ??? very very few i wud say ... and even among the few, some are still out there waiting for work ...

As aptly explained by Javed Akhtar in another show.

It is important to be Interactive like a Singer Performing

Unlike
A Performer singing..

Underlying and Important Consideration is " Singer "

So Singing is paramount and singing with performance is superb - but bad singing with superb performance is a big Zero ( as one of the contestant who only Performa....)

Sibal I totally agree with what you said. These are stage shows and a good singer has to connect with the audience and perform in a subtle way.

If we think about it, many contestants of such shows end up making a living doing stage shows and concerts. Many host musical shows on TV. How many of the singers/contestants have been given chances to do playback singing? How many songs went on to become huge hits? Or how many came out with a successful solo album? So, I feel they have to do a decent job at "connecting" with the audience. But like Kiti mentioned, the performance part doesn't mean dancing or moving around on stage. It depends on the song as well. The performance aspect could be done in a subtle way. For example, on Saturday, Arindam was singing dil lena and he subtlety put his hand over his head and hair, which went with the song and lyrics. Even Alka (who usually comments on the technicalities) pointed it out.

To win such shows, "connecting" with the audience, listeners and viewers is key. Even if a singer doesn't have a great playback voice or doesn't always sing in sur, if their voice (and probably personality too) "connects" with the audience, they have a chance of winning.

I watched Lata interview .. where she mentioned about "ayega anay wala song" -Mahal .. at that time equiments were ofcourse not high tech like now so she had to start the song a bit away from mic and then had to walk slowing while singing some line before finally reaching the mic..well she said it was difficult cause she coulsn't sing while walking ......... now who is talking this "Lata" and so far there is only one Lata 😉
I really hate this part of reality shows where stress goes onto performance.. but are they providing really good quality singers? as for fame grukul it was ok .. cause they were talking about since begining all the X-factor and stage performance thing however shows like "Voice of India" where main focus is on Voice ..this shouldn't matter.. however the problem janta kaa hay .. us ka kia karain bhai 😆

Are they stressing performance in the show? I don't think the judges are that much, at least not on a regular basis. 😕 It could be the KEY to winning though. One obvious mention of performance was by Jatin after Sanchari's jaadu hai nasha hai.

so far they are not talking about it much openly .. as you said .. ture.. and I am saying for this show it shouldn't matter.. however I am afraid they would start commenting on it as soon as they start public voting rounds 😊
