On a visit to Lucknow recently, Express newsline cornered the lead cast of Aisa Des Hai Mera, Saumya Tandon and Kanwaljit on their food preferences and were surprised to find the varied interests that Saumya Tandon and Kanwaljit had. While the light-eyed Rusty of the serial who plays Kanwaljit's England-born daughter who comes to India to search for her roots, confessed to enjoying Gujarati delicacies, the tall, lanky Kanwaljit says he loves nothing better than to sink his teeth into some meaty delicacies. "I'm a real Gujju when it comes to food. Since I love to munch constantly I find dhoklas, khakhras and murmurey perfect for me since they don't add needless weight and are easy on the digestion too," says Saumya, who is a vegetarian. Contrary to this lovely lady's tastes, actor Kanwaljit lives up to his roots (he was born in Kanpur) and says there's nothing like Avadhi delicacies to tempt the palate. "I love Lucknow for its food and don't miss a single opportunity to try out the asortment of kebabs and other non-vegetarian dishes that are a speciality of this region." Living up to his preferences the Punjabi munda makes sure the hotel staff especially bring in his favourite Kakori kebabs and biryani for him and takes an extra large helping of both, tucking away into the delicacies with a gourmet's enthusiasm. "There are only two places in India where you can have great non-vegetarian food- Lucknow and Hyderabad. And there's no dish like Lakhnavi biryani anywhere in the world.
While he made sure he did not leave without carrying home a special pack of tundey kebabs, Kanwaljit admitted that some of his favourite haunts in Bombay were those that served Lakhnavi food.."I know all the places for great kebabs in Bombauy," he says "I make sure I'm never too far away from the smells and tastes of home."
