since its saumya's birthday..so here are some never before posted articles about her.

(may 2006)

If you thought only movies were difficult to cast, well, the selection of Aisa Des Hai Mera, Sony?s new prime-time show, sets the record straight. The problem was with choosing the female protagonist Rusty, an Indian with a foreign face and accent. She is half-British, born and brought up in London.

Nauheed cyrusi of Piya basanti fame was the first to be chosen for the role. She cited date problems and the producers almost sued her for not sticking to the contract.

The next to be picked was Shaheen Khan, the main girl in the Pepsi commercial when Shah Rukh Khan plays the snake charmer. But her demand was for a month?s leave for her wedding and she too had to be dropped from Aisa Des...

The makers finally went for newcomer ,Saumya tandon, who had only done some modelling prior to the show. Her audition tape was approved within two days and on the third day she was shooting for her billboards. And believe it or not, on the fourth day, she left for London to be Rusty.

Did you have to go through a makeover to get the character look?
Not much, except that I had to lighten my hair colour. Now, I've shed my Brit image and have got an Indianised look. My hair had to be blackened and I'm wearing a salwar-kameez. I also had to drop my Brit accent.
In a way, it's good because it's difficult to emote with a put on accent. Even the audience prefers this image.

Are you the jeans and T-shirt or salwar-kameez sort of person in real life?
I'm into jeans, T-shirt and jackets. I find it more comfortable on a day-to-day basis. Occasionally, I do wear a sari when I attend family functions. Ultimately, it's all about viewers' choice and so I'm content wearing salwar-kameez in the show.

What is it about your character, Rusty, that you like?
She's very innocent and is yearning for love from her family. She's not a Goddess or someone who doesn't make mistakes but she accepts her mistakes. So in that way, she's a real character. She's open to emotional blackmail as well and although she has her values, she doesn't preach. (does'nt preach? haha)

Do you relate to her?
No, I don't! Rusty is very impulsive. I'm a very cautious person in real life and wouldn't want to make mistakes.(she is a cautious person just like G..in d dhamaka interview he also described himself as a cautious person)

Will there be drama in your love track as well?
The next couple of weeks will see a lot of focus on my love track. There's going to be lots of drama in it.

What attracted you to television?
Television is a big medium today and so it was an obvious choice. I was offered a couple of shows earlier, but somehow, I didn't like them. Television offers good money and exposure. Unlike films, one does not have to be bold on television. Here I can do what I'm comfortable with. Besides, one needs a godfather in the film industry. I came to Mumbai to shoot some ad campaigns. My pictures reached Manish Goswami's office through my co-coordinator. They were looking for a girl with an international look for the show. . That's how I was on 'Aisa Des Hain Mera'.

Does this mean exposure and smooch scenes are out for you?
Absolutely! I'd never do them.

Are you choosy about the television shows that you'll take up?
Let's see. I'd love to do good work but let's see how my career shapes up after this show. Currently, I'm concentrating on this show. It's a daily and so it gets very hectic. I'd also like to do a film if it's good and where I don't really have to compromise.

How about a Balaji show?
It's every actor's dream to do a Balaji show. They know the success formula. So it's a quick route to name and fame. I'm open to any good show that comes my way after this.

How about theatre?
I've done a few Hindi plays before and would love to do more plays whenever I have the time.

How would you want to see yourself a few years from now?
Maybe still acting but I'd love to get back to writing. It was my father's last wish. He felt that I belong to writing. I wrote a book titled 'Meri Bhavnaein', which was an anthology comprising self-written poems. I was in school then. My book was nominated for the 'Young Writers' National Award'. Getting back to writing is a goal that I've set for myself.

Trying to find a strong foothold

Actress Soumya Tandon, who plays Rusti in Aisa Des Hai Mera, thinks that it's difficult for an outsider like her to survive in the industry. "The industry is not so organised, like even if you are fatigued you've to work," says Soumya, quickly adding, "but it's not that I'm not enjoying."

Was it difficult to play? "Actually, it was producer Manish Goswami and director Lekh Tandon who thought that I could play this role. They were sure that I fitted the bill. ." Did she prepare herself for the role?

"No, there was no preparation," she says Soumya is the winner of the 'Femina Cover Girl 2006' and has also done a number of ad campaigns . And acting with seasoned actors was a great opportunity which Soumya didn't want to lose.

"I am getting to learn a lot from them." Soumya is not just a pretty face. When she was a child and her book was even nominated for Modi National Young Writer's award. And whenever she's free, the actress loves to read.

Hey vanzi....I like my doll....Soumya Tandon....

Thanks for the article JOJO....

As usual...conservative opinions....how can you think of even stepping into a Balaji serial with your attitude....The woman is sure to be forgotten soon

Perhaps....after a few years I will read news about her as a famous writer..I think she belongs there
