The sibling of the special child - Abhi
The intensity of love that this child has for his sister is as much as his parents have for her. I dont think it's any less. The quickness with which he defends her is admirable......whether it is taking the blame for her or putting someone in place for speaking rudely to her.
He is concerned about his sister and constantly questions his parents about it. In the past fortnight: ~
1. Will Antara also get married and go away?
2. Why does Arti bua not like Antara?
3. Meekly takes the blame for Antara ( and takes a severe punishment from his mother just to protect her)
4. If Papa can sacrifice for Arti bua why can't I? (Takes the blame for her regarding the mobile with Sameer's father)
5. I wont eat since Antara will be hungry. Who will feed Antara? (when Angel is lost)
6. Who will look after Antara if she is sent away since her mum is with the stars now. (yesterday's epi)
7. Why dont people understand Antara and her condition?
Antara is sometimes rough with him and pushes him away. But this little child never retaliates like the instance when she shoves him and he falls. He doesn't cry.
Of course, he also wants his parents to show love and pay attention to him. If he feels they don't, then he sweetly reminds them. Like when he sits on Vidya's lap and she tells him the next time she will be there when he wakes up. Like when they compliment Antara on how pretty she looks, he asks ...what about me? But no tantrums.
He has taken up Antara's cause with outsiders.
1. Taiji ---- puts her in her place when she verbally and physically abuses Antara. He doesn't understand anything about protocol.... he just knows about love and loyalty.
2. He loses his temper and makes his displeasure apparent to Billo. He gives a cold shoulder to his best friend.
3. Always escorts Antara everywhere giving her dignity and a place of honour.
Thirdly and most importantly, he has achieved what his parents and educators have hitherto failed to achieve. He got his sister to dance on the stage without any formal training, without any flashcards and without the interference from the adults. And in turn, she has responded beautifully to him. It was so heartening and touching to see the two of them.
*A thunderous applause for my little heart throb*
One thing I would have loved to see was the admiration in the eyes of the parents for both the children. The creatives bungled there. Adit and Vidya are sensitive to both their children. It would have made Abhi happier (and the viewers) to see them acknowledge his stupendous efforts.
Its rather a long post and thanks for the patience of reading it through. 😉 😆

Skep, you are right on target as usual, VERY well written, expressed and put together. I think you really captured what a "typical functioning" sibling of an autistic child goes through. So many times that issue is ignored completely in the real world, and the siblings get shoved aside in the whole rush to help the autistic kid. It's neccessary of course for the kid that needs the help, but it is still something that parents need to be aware of and also they need to take care that the siblings who are "normally functioning" don't get forgotten.

Skep - awesome as always...if only there were more siblings in this world like Abhi - I would trade my brother in for him any day!!! The creatives have really worked hard on developing his character which is quite unique...he was a little insecure at first & now all he has in his heart is unconditional love, acceptance, respect & honour for his sister, Antara...
Thanks for a great post Skep!

Skep dearest, NOTHING that you write will ever be long, forget about it being too long!!!!!!! Wait impatiently to read you everytime I open this site and many many times do I open the site mind you. And as usual bang on target about the lovely heartthrob and his peripheral status and about the creatives having given him a miss while the parents look on proudly at little angel's achievement! THANKS Skep, don't want to add a million because then I would feel like changing it to a billion and then again to a trillion and even that would not suffice. Also Abhi's confusion at being scolded in front of tayiji and then applauded in privacy for the same deed was so so natural, confusion writ large on his face and inhabiting his mind, what should his reaction be??? and aditya kind of fails to answer. Such a beautiful world, the world of children, innoncent, guileless, no protocol, no societal worries, no shades. Just right and wrong. Wonderful.
Yes Abhi has indeed been portrayed with a great deal of creative honesty and prowess!! Kudos to the Aap ki Antara team.

Your reflections on Abhi & responses from others reminds me the real world story of Asna & her elder autistic brother Akshay they showed in last episode. The last line of Aasna "It is not a sin to be born autistic....You just love autistic kid....He will love you even more"

Thanks Opti for putting the words so nicely. I forgot to put it since the whole story made me emotional and then I got involved in work.
Skepi as always u have put across the thoughts very nicely. I guess somewhere the story is also telling that children accept things faster than adults as they are more open hearted. Children emulate the reactions of their parents and when he sees Adi-Vid caring abt Antara he understands her. Even Billu has started to understd Antara. Having a free mind is utmost imp if we want to accept things and move ahead.

Skepsie, Brilliant! And yes, very true. Abhi is a true little hero. He did show some jealousy when he woke up crying because Vidya was not with him, but he rallied himself very well.

I have been having such a hard time lately, balancing both my kids' needs (autistic and non). I think we adults have more limitations than the kids. They have so much capacity to enjoy each moment and believe the best of everyone.

Just wanted to add--I love how, despite so many unglamorous problems going on--money, kid stuff, relatives driving them bonkers--Vidya and Aditya still manage to find the joy in each moment. So nice to see them feeling good about each other. I really hope something of that remains.

Mahika.
