Much a ADO about nothing. The recent hoopla over the possiblity of lead character getting raped in the show and possibily NOT marrying her rapist could have been a very novel move on part of a zeetv soap.

However, the public cannot handle it. The public are so disturbed with the idea of a rape on a show that they can only accept it ulnless the rapist is the husband or the victim marries the rapist. What does this mean for rape victims? It means society is NOT ready to accept the idea that good women are raped. It's too much for people to handle.
It would have been a step forward if we could have seen the struggles a woman goes through and it would have been a very challenging role for Mili to have played, but the public is just not ready for this type of story even for a supporting character.
A bulk of the complaints on this forum were centered on the idea that they just didn't want the rape to happen to Mili because she was a nice character and NOT because writers were reknowned for their poor handling issues. Yes, some posts like SaniCo really did a good job of speaking out against the rape for the RIGHT reasons, but others were just overly dramatic.
Just a few months ago a fan fiction was written where the writer had Abhi rape Simi. Hardly anyone got upset by it because, as several of us noted, it was OK for the people here to have the hero rape the victim. In the eyes of the writer and her fans, this was perfectly acceptable.
It was ONLY after a number of people spoke out that the poorly handled story where the victim had to apologize to the rapist was pulled. The disturbing nature of this story was completely ignored. It was not that it was wrong to have shown a rape, but to blame the victim and deny that it was not a rape was wrong.
So how was this story OK, but not the one that Zeetv was going to show? Why the outrage? How is this ANY different? Is it because Nakul is beating up the girl as well? Hey, he was drunk in the same way Abhi was drunk!
Seriously people; it is about time we are not afraid to see a character raped, getting justice and for the world to learn that rape happens in India and the struggles of the victim and the rights she deserves are shown. It should be done not for the TRP ratings but to inspire and support all those silent victims for whom justice is never shown. These women should not longer be shunned or viewed as shameful. It would be revoluationary to have show a woman put her life back together and find someone who would love her even though she had been raped. Unfortunately, the public is not ready and the CVs are too lazy and afraid to take the challenge.
Perhaps one day someone will take the bold step and show the real truth and lift the veil of shame and silence these women have to endure.

I agree with you on 99.9% of your points. However, I already know that this show would NOT do justice to rape victims. It would NOT portray the rape realistically. It would NOT be utilized as an opportunity to educate the masses. It would make a joke out of a serious issue, and for that reason, I am glad they did not go through with it. Yes, it was just for TRP ratings, and it always will be for TRP ratings. While I agree that the reasons presented for not wanting the rape track to come through were silly, I don't believe it would have been handled gracefully anyway. I just don't expect that much from a serial like this. I have seen one too many poorly handled rape scenes on these stupid serials, and I have read more than my share of appalling and disgusting posts on various forums in regards to those scenes. It would be nice if a show came along that shattered the stigma and ignorance surrounding rape, but it isn't going to come from 12/14 Karol Bagh.

Thanks for your support. I didn't expect much support for my post on this forum. I do agree with you; CVs writers of KB would have done a shoddy job and that's when I would have been outraged. I was never outraged that they would show the character of Mili getting raped. Good women are raped in real life and it would have been a huge step in the right direction to have not shied away from the subject of rape.
I would LOVE to see a show where a woman refuses to marry her rapist; seeks justice and fights to get it. I would like to see the challenges she endures from the judicial system; the reasons WHY women do not speak out. The lack of support from the police, the community etc. In the US soaps brought to light the horrific incidences of rape and were particularly good at presenting the issue of date rape. It really helped make some revolutionary changes.
What does make me pissed off with the CVs was their promotion of the show - that Nakul would rape Mili - were they saying this in order to increase their own TRP ratings and then chickened out?

But isn't that the promise of this show's foundation to show the tabooed topics and initially that was their promos and the survey for the viewers..so why can't we expect something this bold and out of the ordinary from them..
12/24 has already stepped in the row of bringing us many FIRSTS in a row
Like the first show totally shot in Delhi
Choosing their entire cast Delhi based and from Delhi..
Younger boy and the Older Gal love commencement and the follow up with their marriage.
Unwed pregnancy
Now my first ever desi serial and for many living abroad...
Love marriage VS Arrange marriage....

So Why Should not we have put them at the highest pedestal not to talk about the infrastructure.... and expected them to bring these issues wisely and promote the awareness of this violent crime to the masses..

.I have always put Karol-Bagh to be a Different*, Daring** Defying** and Challenging** serial,,
,😍
And hopefully they will come back to the issues raised and follow up with the at-least...with thorough research..Had they gone with this Rape** and then failed to show us the consequences** we had every right to blame them but at this point this is just all futile and delusive because they failed us with their false promos and the add articles just to boost their T.R.Ps😍and ultimately failed themselves in their own promise of being the daring one....

I wonder if the petition had an impact? If you look at the posts everyone is overjoyed that Mili did not get raped. That's fine; I would hate for any woman to get raped. However, it shows that people here are NOT ready to see anyone getting raped on a show. Fine, let it not be the lead character; I totally understand, but what about a supporting character? It is not that the CVs are not ready; it is the public who cannot handle it.

You make such valid points! Rape is a very serious and real issue. It is sick and disturbing. I just recently watched the movie Human Trafficking. I wanted to look away many times, but I didn't. In order to understand how vile things happen and how to stop them, you must fully open your eyes to it.

Of course, Mili getting raped would suck. Any woman getting raped is wrong, regardless if the character is nice or not. I wouldn't have mind the rape track if it was handled properly. I could see Mili fighting for justice and putting Nakul behind bars. Sigh, I'm sure that would never happen...cuz it's much more entertaining for a rape victim to marry her rapist. Lovely.

Apux, when we marry the victim to the rapist we are dumbing down the horrible nature of rape as a crime. Would you EVER want to marry someone who beat you or tried to kill you or try to steal from you? No. So why do we as a society find anything romantic when we make someone marry her rapist? In another show the victim was raped AFTER she married. In part she was continually threatened by the rapist and married him to because he threatend to throw acid at her. Moreover, when the attempted rapist took pictures of the attempted rape and even confessed in public (prior to marrying her), it was considered shameful for the victim to have the rape made public than for it to be used to incriminate the rapist.
Rape has such a horrible impact for a woman; it turns her life into such a mess. It's not something I can stomach either and it's highly disturbing. I can't even bring myself to watch it on screen especially if it is protrayed graphically as we see in some western films. However, such a dreadful incident takes place everyday in India and tragically Indian writers, some of them women, promote the romanticization of rape as part of their shows. For example the writer of one show on another channel has the victim married to person who has tried to attempt to rape her twice after marriage and he is the hero of the show and the people LOVE this guy. When I spoke out on the forum the people booed me off telling me how much they loved this show and I was ruining it for them!

Jaya, I won't go into too much detail about this fan fiction but yes, it was here and pulled. The sad part is that few people here couldn't tell the difference between rape and consensual sex,
and passionately promoted the fan fiction but are not outraged about the rape on KB. Bewilders me.
Re KB; the scary part is that the CVs would have probably headed in that direction (marry Nakul to Mili🤢) as have all CVs on other shows. If you look at the article posted regarding the news regarding the show, you will be horrified to learn that there are a number of shows romanticizing rape.
You hit it right there! (see my underlined part). We have got to fight to move away from this mindset. Men who rape women NEVER respect them in the first place. It doesn't matter if there is any hitting or beating; a rapist is rarely remorseful for his actions.

Many of Ekta shows have already introduced the rape issue & the female getting justice in the end. For instance in Kasauti zindagi ki & Kahani ghar ghar ki had a track in between regarding the plight of a rape victim & how she struggles to get justice. Plus there was anil kappoor movie about 10 years back wherein aishwarya played a rape victim. Actually all shows come up with a rape issue & many show that the victim marries her rapist, for example in pavitra rishta we saw vandu marrying her rapist, this is even more disgusting. So there isnt anything new. A rape would have totally spoiled the storyline of 12/24 KB.
Contrary to your opinion what I feel is if incase mili was raped then the show would have send out the wrong message that girls should keep their mouths shut or face the consequences. It would have proved that rape is a weapon for the man to take his revenge on a girl. Infact mili by saving herself has portrayed herself as a strong & self-reliant women who can fight & protect herself. Mili is the only strong & stable character in the serial from the very beginning, she's never scared of fighting against any injustice, & if her rape was shown it would have portrayed her as a weak woman. Infact by saving herself she has kind of shattered the belief that women are weak against men. A person like mili is infact an inspiration to all women!
