Thanks for the comments, guys!
Part 44- Engagement(s)
Isha: Di! Where is my golden eye shimmer?
Nisha: (sigh) It's there, Isha! Just look properly.
I: Oh, never mind I found it! Thanks!
Nisha smiled at her sister. Both of them were so scared, nervous and excited. It was the engagement night. THEIR engagement. Finally, they would be engaged. Of course, Eklavya and Manthan had already proposed but this made everything official. Plus, the Viranis insisted on a party. After all, the wedding was to be in a few days. So they had to have an engagement before. Nisha looked at her pink sari.
While Isha kept fixing hers:
Downstairs everybody was at the party and more and more people kept arriving.
N: Isha! Come on! You look fine!
I: But, di, my make up's a little-
N: Everything is fine, Isha! You've been fixing your make up for the last 45 minutes! We need to go downstairs and meet the guests.
I: Are you sure? Because I think my hair –
Nisha didn't bother telling her sister that her hair was fine for the billionth time. She just pulled her out of the room and slowly made her way downstairs. Automatically, Isha's eyes started searching for Eklavya. She couldn't find him anywhere though. She looked over to Nisha but she was already engaged in a conversation with Manthan. Where was Eklavya?
Out of the blue a young man came up to her, introducing himself. Isha tried hard to look like she was interested and kept smiling while her eyes wandered to the party, searching for Eklavya. The man said his name was Raj.
R: You're Isha, right?
I: Uh, yes, I am.
R: I can tell you two apart. You're the prettier one. (winks)
I: We're twins! Identical twins, incase you haven't noticed.
That was the worst thing anyone had ever said to her. You're prettier than your sister? How pathetic was that? They were twins! Identical twins! They looked exactly the same. Raj kept on talking about how Isha's sari was wonderful and how she looked great in it.
R: Really! Your sari and hair and make up is just perfect, Ms. Isha!
I: (smiles uncomfortably)
R: Honestly, you look simply stunning!
I: (mutters under her breath) wish I could say the same about you.
R: Did you say anything?
I: Oh, no, I was just wondering if you've see Eklavya around?
R: Eklavya?
I: My husband-to-be.
R: Oh, no, actually, I haven't.
Suddenly the spot lights turned to Manthan and Nisha as they both made their way to the couple dancing. Isha loved dancing! She was a dancer after all. And Eklavya knew how much she liked to dance so why wasn't he here with her? Plus, Isha didn't think she could stand another minute of this Raj. Suddenly, everybody was staring at Isha. She turned around to see Raj bent down on one knee.
R: May I have a dance?
I: (thinks) Uh, how about NO??!!
But of course, now she was part of the Virani family. She could say stuff like that. She wondered why the Virani kids were allowed to be rude yet the bahus weren't. She had no choice but to dance with Raj. Raj had a huge grin plastered on his face as they danced. He kept pulling her closer, despite Isha's attempts to pull further away.
R: You know, Isha, every since I've seen you, you've been in my head. Girl, you must be tired from running in my head all day!
I: (thinks) No, but I am going to be tired running away from you!
R: You want a drink?
I: No, I'm sorry, I don't drink.
R: How about for a walk?
Isha looked at Raj thinking, what the hell was wrong with him. Suddenly, Raj pulled her closer than they were. His breath felt disgusting on her bare back. A strong arm pulled her away from Raj. It was Eklavya. As soon as she saw him, she felt relieved.
E: I believe the lady said 'no'
R: (annoyed) And you are?
I: This is Eklavya. My to-be-husband. In other words, my fiance.
Raj looked confused. Isha couldn't take it anymore. She knew she was supposed to act like a Virani bahu and be all nice but this was an exception.
I: In other words, I think you need to get lost!
.As Eklavya and Isha walked away from him hand in hand, Raj looked at them with jealousy.
I: Where were you?
E: I was stuck in traffic. I had to get my sherwani.
I: Well, better late than never. Thank God you came. That idiot was so annoying. One more second and I swear I would have showed him what a back kick is.
E: One more second and I think I would have done the same too.
They looked up to the podium. Karan Virani and Gautam Virani were standing there. Eklavya and Manthan went up followed by the twins.
Karan: It brings me great pleasure to announce my son's engagement to Nisha.
Gautam: And my son's engagement to Isha.
Everybody started clapping as the couples exchanged rings. The two couples were so happy that they couldn't express themselves in words. Finally they were engaged! Now in a few days, they would also be married!
