Chapter 12:

€œ- good, right Raj?€ Nandini€™s voice shook him out of his thoughts.

€œOh€ yeah€€ he said absent-mindedly. He eyed the man heading towards Colonel Shakti€™s table€ something wasn€™t right. Nandini thought he was probably thinking of Naina; but Naina knew better. She looked at where he was looking, realising the situation. She leaned a bit towards him.

€œDo you know him?€ she asked quietly, acting normal. Hearing her voice so close to him sent a jolt through his mind. He answered after a few moments of silence.

€œNo€ but something is definitely wrong about him.€

€œHe could be one of Colonel€™s men€ but then again, Colonel doesn€™t seem to recognize him€€ Naina muttered to herself. Rajveer sent an amused glance at her, making her grin as well.

€œSo€ what do you want to do abou-€

€œHey what are you two whispering about? Planning something against our back?€ Nandini teased. Aalekh just raised an eyebrow at her. Pooja and Yudi looked at her in despair, while Ali rolled his eyes; he couldn€™t understand how these things could get so complicated. In his background, people didn€™t bother about hook ups or break ups. Orni, on the other hand, looked to and fro between the three in awe and excitement, moving her head from side to side to look at them in turn.

€œNandini! Of course not€ we were just-€ Naina€™s hand gripping his arm stopped him from finishing the sentence. She looked up at him, discreetly nodding her head to the direction of Colonel€™s table.

The man was playing with Colonel€™s nephew, offering him a chocolate, moving away from the table while the rest of the family was in a heated conversation. Rajveer immediately got up, as well as Ali and Naina. They headed towards the table and Yudi, Pooja and Aalekh towards any exits.

Nandini was amazed by their cooperation; no one had told them what was going on, and yet they were already involved in the situation! She wondered if her batch would€™ve reacted like this in their first year. She headed over to Colonel€™s family, wanting to warn them about the man; he could be dangerous.

Orni, following Yudi€™s instructions, went to a less crowded area at a distance from the man, so that she could take care of the child and return him to his family if the man let him go, even by mistake. The thrill was really getting to her now.

Rajveer caught Gopal by his collar, pushing him back so that he was away from the child. Orni signed to the kid to go to her, and since he was scared and she looked nice enough he ran to her. Gopal made a run for the main exit seeing many people coming in at that precise moment. Yudi was there, already having informed the guard about him. Ali ran after him, knocking down a few chairs, with Naina on his heels. The newcomers got in the way and confused the guard. Gopal slipped though a corner away from Yudi, and ran as fast as his feet could take him.

While all this was happening, Nandini had informed Colonel about Gopal, and Orni had returned his nephew safely. Seeing Gopal go out the front exit, Aalekh went out the back door, hoping to catch him when he got to the main street. Pooja followed him, not wanting her friend to encounter any danger if he was alone. Rajveer tipped his head to a side looking at Nandini, and she understood. She called the police and ran after Rajveer, who was a good distance away in the few moments time.

Gopal had his car parked at the end of the street. He got to it very soon, not realising Rajveer, Nandini, Orni, Naina and Ali were right behind him on the jeep. He saw Pooja and Aalekh run out from the alley at the back of the building and on to the main street, a few metres away from his car. They didn€™t do anything to catch him though. Aalekh seemed to tell Pooja something and they ran the opposite direction. Taking the opportunity, Gopal started to turn his car around, but his heart caught at his throat as he saw an Army jeep in the middle of the road, leaving not enough space for him to slip by. He turned his head back to get a bigger shock. The road where Pooja and Aalekh were was now completely blocked with auto-rickshaws.

In the jeep: Rajveer, Nandini, Naina, Ali & Orni

€œYes!€ Orni exclaimed with a broad grin as she saw Pooja and Aalekh€™s plan in action. Rajveer felt pride swell up in him and looked at the rear-view mirror to see Naina. She wasn€™t there! She had already gotten out with Ali. His mind froze as he saw Gopal bend down and come back up with something in his hand. There was no doubt that it was a knife; the sunlight was reflecting off from it.

Nandini and he followed Naina and Ali, instructing Orni to stay put and duck if she heard any loud sounds. He took out the gun he had gotten from the Ammunitions Room, seeing his friend take hers out. They ran up to catch up to the other two, Rajveer grasping Naina€™s hand to pull her back. Ali slowed down too, staying with Naina.

Gopal suddenly jumped out of the car and threw his knife at Nandini€™s right hand which was holding the gun, since she was at the front.

€œAh!€ she cried, clutching her bleeding hand. Naina ran back to the jeep with her to get first aid help, while Ali ran to Nandini to assist her. Rajveer was still walking towards Gopal, when all of a sudden there was a gunshot. A man in a grey kurti came out of another alley across the street and had shot in the air. He ran over to Gopal and threw a spare gun at him. Suddenly he stopped on his tracks. There was a knife against his throat. Not wasting any time, Rajveer ran at the speed of lightning and punched Gopal on the face, kicking the gun out of his hand.

Aalekh, who had held his knife against the second man€™s throat, was now struggling with him to get the gun out, but it seemed like he was about to shoot Aalekh. Another gunshot stopped everyone on their tracks, dreading the worst. Ali had taken Nandini€™s gun and shot at the second man, aiming at his hand holding the gun.

€œPerfect shot, Cadet Begh! No doubt you€™ll pass this subject without any trouble.€ Rajveer commented proudly. Now that Nandini was at the jeep with Orni to take care of her injury, Naina ran back to Rajveer with necessities; e.g. rope, knife, etc. Pooja had come over as well, now helping with tying the two men up. Only then did they notice a thick crowd gathered at corners of the street; this wasn€™t going to be as easy as the cadets had imagined it or seen in movies!
