India’s Tabla genius Zakir Hussain is no more. He has died at the age of 73. His demise happened due to heart-related issues. He was admitted at the San Francisco Hospital with heart problems. Zakir Hussain was kept in the ICU. This information was given to PTI by Rakesh Chaurasia, the son of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. His manager Nirmala Bachani said that he had blood-pressure issues. More details are awaited.

Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad posted, “Sad to hear Ustad #ZakirHussain Sahab’s passing. He was a legend and the beats of his tabla will live in our hearts forever. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

The son of renowned Indian Tabla player Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain grew up in Mumbai. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India. He is not only a classical musician but also a composer, percussionist, music producer and actor. In 2009, he won a Grammy Award for the Contemporary World Music Album Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart and Giovanni Hidalgo.

Zakir Hussain was associated with Monkey Man that starred Dev Patel and Sobhita Dhulipala. He also composed music for Manto that had Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead. In Bollywood, he also acted in the movie Saaz where he played the role of Himaan Das.
