Yoo Ah In of Hellbound fame pleads for leniency in drug use case; says, 'I will never lose sight'

Yoo Ah In who is known for his shows like Hellbound, Descendants Of The Sun, Chicago Typewriter and more appeared in front of the Seoul High Court on December 24. He is facing four years in prison for drug use. The prosecution has demanded a long jail term for use of substances like propofol and ketamine. Yoo Ah In is appealing the previous ruling of the Court. The actor is known globally for his work in top Korean dramas and movies like Burning, which got him immense critical acclaim.

Yoo Ah-In was seen in a mint-coloured prison uniform as he expressed deep regret for his actions. It seems he was unwell and needed those medications to handle the pain. Yoo Ah-In apologized to everyone whom he had hurt through his actions, which included his family, fans, and colleagues.

His letter read: “I want to sincerely apologize to everyone I have hurt and disappointed. I caused irreparable pain to my parents, who are now deeply wounded. I also disappointed and hurt my colleagues, associates, and fans who had placed infinite trust in me. My actions were betrayal and illegal. I deeply reflect on my wrongdoing.

I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect, and I am committed to correction and recovery. In front of the public who are observing me and alongside those I am with here, I make a solemn pledge with unwavering determination before this sacred court.

No matter where I am, I will never lose sight of the gravity of my crimes. I will keep a sound mind and never betray my conscience. I earnestly ask for a chance to contribute to society with a firm resolve toward learning and life. I will face the world with greater maturity and health.”

South Korea has strict drug laws and celebrities too have faced the flak. He has been charged with consuming drugs over 180 times between 2020 to 2022. The actor admitted to consuming sleeping pills. He apparently took marijuana to get relief from chronic pain. Yoo Ah In has been sentenced to one year in jail.
