“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is complete, the character’s journey…..” : Kunaal Roy Kapur on sequel

Even after more than a decade since its release, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) continues to be adored by fans. The film, which masterfully blends friendship, love, aspirations, and self-discovery, remains a cherished part of Bollywood’s modern cinematic history. The fandom surrounding the movie is as strong as ever, with audiences still celebrating its unforgettable dialogues, soulful music, and heartwarming characters.

Recently, Kunal Roy Kapur, who portrayed Taran in the movie, shared his thoughts on whether a sequel should be made. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, he expressed that he believes the story has already reached its conclusion. It is complete. It is already done, right? The journeys of those characters are done. They are not needed really, he stated. His perspective suggests that the film beautifully wrapped up each character’s arc, leaving little room for further exploration.

Speaking specifically about his character Taran and Aditi (played by Kalki Koechlin), Kunal was asked if they would still be together after all these years. He responded optimistically, saying, given the graph of the movie, they would not be in a divorce court. They would definitely be a happily married couple. I can’t tell if she would be happily married with Taran, but he would probably be happy.

While Kunaal remains skeptical about a sequel, Ranbir Kapoor, who played Bunny, previously revealed that director Ayan Mukerji had a compelling story in mind for a follow-up. During an interaction with fans in 2023, Ranbir shared, I think Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani would make a good sequel. Ayan also had a very nice story, I remember, but then he went into this Brahmastra journey. But, never say never. He might make it after a couple of years, he added. His remarks ignited hope among fans eager to revisit Bunny, Naina, Avi, and Aditi’s lives a decade later.

Despite no confirmation of a sequel, YJHD recently re-released in theaters and received the same overwhelming love it did during its initial run. The nostalgia associated with the film remains intact, with audiences once again singing along to “Badtameez Dil” and tearing up at Bunny and Naina’s emotional moments. Its box office success during the re-release further proved its timeless appeal.

From its memorable characters to its celebration of youthful aspirations, YJHD has gained a cult status over the years.
