The panoramic colour of the sea, blue, is a common thread in nature. Over centuries, this hue has come to represent calm, cold, mysticism, and sadness. While major aspects of cinematography, such as camera angles, are duly praised and spoken about, one tends to ignore the usage of vivid colours in scenes. Though a number of colour schemes and palettes are used by the set designers and cinematographers to enhance the scenes, a colour that is largely used is blue. Be it in the form of clear waters or pristine skies, this is one colour that has definitely made its mark in Bollywood. Read on, as we, at BollyCurry, take you through some iconic scenes featuring the deep blue.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) marked the debut of the Greek God, Hrithik Roshan, and Ameesha Patel. An important part of this movie, along with the song "Pyaar Ki Kashti Mein", was filmed on the Star Flyer cruise. The cruise plays a significant part in the plot progression of the film, as it leads up to a series of incidents that allow Rohit (Roshan) and Sonia (Patel) to fall in love with each other.

Ameesha Patel's Humraaz (2002), in which she starred opposite Akshay Khanna and Bobby Deol, had a significantly large portion of the movie shot on a cruise. Patel and Khanna's characters are shown to be a part of a dancing troupe whose latest gig allows them to perform on a cruise. It is here that they came across the aristocrat Raj (Deol), and hatch plan to usurp his property. The movie featured a number of beautifully shot scenes on the cruise and along the beaches of Malaysia.

It is interesting to see how many love stories in Bollywood have begun in the middle of the deep seas. The plot of U, Me Aur Hum (2008) starts with Ajay (Ajay Devgn) meeting his future wife, Piya (Kajol) while vacationing on a cruise with his friends, where their love story blooms amidst fun and frolic in the middle of the ocean. While this movie revolves around the couple's battle with Piya's deteriorating mental health, one cannot deny that the love story is an integral part of the movie. In fact, the first and the last scenes of the movie has Ajay and Piya return to the same cruise where they first met to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on board, accompanied by family and friends.

One of 2011's biggest hits was Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara, starring Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, and Kalki Koechlin in the leading roles. The movie revolves around Kabir's (Deol) bachelor trip across Spain with his childhood buddies, Imran (Akhtar) and Arjun (Roshan), where they indulge in adrenaline filled activities such as sky diving and deep sea diving. Arjun is shown to have hydrophobia, but conquers it with the help of Laila (Kaif), his deep water diving instructor. One has to credit Carlos Catalan for the stellar cinematography in the sequences shot underwater.

This article would not be complete if Zoya Akhtar's recent hit, Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) is not mentioned. Starring an ensemble cast featuring the likes of Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Anil Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra, around 80% of the film was shot on board a luxury cruise, where the Mehras take their family and friends on a cruise to celebrate their 30th marriage anniversary. This trip makes the family come to terms with their dysfunctionality and air out their issues by the end of the movie. The movie boasts of some aesthetically shot scenes on the backdrop of the endless blue waters, and once again, all credit goes to the immensely talented Catalan for the same.

Directors and cinematographers have beautifully envisioned, and brought to life, scenes shot on board cruises, with the backdrop of the deep blue waters and clear skies. These movies have definitely led to the rise in the popularity of cruises, as more people flock off to spend their vacation in the middle of the ocean after watching these films. Which is your favourite Bollywood movie shot on board a cruise ship?
