Kajol makes her debut in the horror genre with Maa, a film promising both emotional depth and visual terror. In a recent interview with HT, she discussed her motivations for taking on the role, the film's incorporation of mythology, and her children's reactions to her work.
“Maa came to me as a concept note, and I loved it because I am quite a mythology buff. Our country has such wonderful and fabulous stories and one of my favourites is Maa Kali and Raktabeej’s story," Kajol said, explaining what attracted her to the Vishal Furia film.
The Maa trailer hints at a compelling narrative of a mother's fight to shield her daughter from darkness. A particularly striking scene of Kajol's character enduring brutal torture has left a lasting impression on viewers.
“I wasn’t that unsettled by it, probably because I did it," Kajol said. “But everyone around me had the same reaction (makes disgusted face). They said, ‘I can’t see you like this’. But that’s what horror is, and that’s why it will be particularly effective."
Kajol's children, Nysa and Yug, saw the trailer, though she doubts they will watch the whole film. “Nysa might not. She is like me, doesn’t like horror," she added with a laugh.
If asked whether her kids now give her feedback on her performances, Kajol answered right away. “Oh, they have always had opinions. Fortunately or unfortunately, that opinion has not changed. They are very clear about it: ‘We can’t watch you crying on screen; you should do films like papa does. Do Golmaal!’ They want me to do films that only make them laugh, and there is nobody crying, no glycerine is used, and nothing happens to me. I wonder what is this film where nothing happens to me, and I have to do nothing. Why am I in this film?"
The trailer for Maa features Kajol in a powerful role as a mother fighting to shield her daughter from a supernatural threat. The narrative starts with a seemingly ordinary road trip that transforms into a nightmare when a strange entity attacks their car, leaving them stranded in the unsettling village of Chandanpur. As unsettling events occur, Kajol's character uncovers a cursed tree connected to disappearances. Ignoring warnings, she vows to prevent her daughter from being sacrificed to break the curse.
Maa also features Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Surjyasikha Das. Produced by Devgn Films and Jio Studios, the film blends mythology with horror, promising a suspenseful viewing experience.
