Shreyas Talpade Reflects on Comedy's Golden Era and the Changing Landscape of Hindi Cinema

Shreyas Talpade, a notable figure in Hindi cinema, made his mark during a period when comedy films were at their peak. Iconic movies like Golmaal (2006), Phir Hera Pheri, and Garam Masala (both 2005) defined the era, with Talpade himself featuring in several of these classics. Today, many cinephiles lament that modern comedies lack the charm of those golden days.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Talpade resonates with this sentiment, stating, “I have always enjoyed doing comedy films. In every film of mine, I feel there needs to be some moment where people laugh. I was once known as a serious actor, and then comedy happened. Now, I am known for it. I have no complaints or regrets. We need to make more such films. What has happened today is OTT.”

He further elaborates on the shift in content consumption, particularly on OTT platforms. “On this medium, there is a lot of content, and most of that content is either dark or serious,” he says. “However, we keep searching for more comedies. So the demand is definitely there. Films like Bhagam Bhag (2006), Golmaal were genuinely funny films. Even now there are some, but they are far and few.”

Talpade also shares his admiration for recent comedies. “I started watching Good Newwz (2019) again recently, and I also liked Kunal Kemmu’s directorial Madgaon Express (2024). People are looking for such comedy films. I’m currently working on Housefull 5 and Welcome to the Jungle, both beloved franchises. And Rohit Shetty has announced another Golmaal, which fans are eagerly waiting for. We do miss those comedies we have grown to love.”

When asked about his involvement in the new Golmaal film, Talpade says, “Rohit only reaches out to actors once his script is ready. I believe he’s still working on it, but I’m eagerly waiting for that call.”
