Samantha Ruth Prabhu has always been one of the most outspoken stars in the film industry. Recently, she opened up about the gender pay gap in Indian cinema and shared how she has taken a stand for change through her own production house, Tralala Moving Pictures.
The actress, who has been working in films for over 15 years, spoke about how she was part of many projects where male co-stars were paid much more than her, even when the roles and responsibilities were the same. “I have been in many films where, not really sure why, but you’re paid dramatically different salaries for the same number of days and the same kind of role,” she said during a conversation with Foodpharmer.
Samantha also clarified that she understands the difference in pay for big hero-driven films, where the male actor brings the crowd to theatres. However, she pointed out that there have been many films where both leads had equally challenging roles, yet the male actor received a significantly higher pay. “I do understand that there’s a difference. But there are also films where it was an equally demanding role, and there was still this stark difference," she added.
The ‘Oo Antava’ star shared that she is trying to fix the problems she once faced. She believes that the things which disturb us the most often guide us towards our purpose. “15 years I have been in the industry and what I try to do right now is to not repeat the mistakes that were apparent to me. That in my lifetime, I can’t do anything about my situation. But I can do something about the future,” she said.
Samantha continued, “You have to put your weight behind things that bother you. I do believe that you will find your purpose in the things that bother you. That has been my mantra, that my purpose is where the things bother me.”
Samantha was last seen in the web series Citadel: Hunny Bunny opposite Varun Dhawan. She will soon return to screens in the highly awaited The Family Man Season 3 by Raj & DK.
