In a surprising turn of events, PVR Inox has taken legal action against Maddock Films, seeking Rs 60 crore in damages following the abrupt cancellation of the theatrical release of Bhool Chuk Maaf. The film was originally set to hit cinema screens on May 9, but just a day before its release, Maddock Films pulled the plug, a move that has sparked controversy within the entertainment industry.

Film trade analyst Komal Nahta took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, stating that PVR Inox filed the lawsuit after Maddock backed out of the theatrical release, allegedly due to weak advance bookings. This decision reportedly came as a shock to theatre chains, especially considering the marketing and operational costs already incurred by them in anticipation of the release.

However, Maddock Films offered a different perspective. In a heartfelt statement released to the public, the production house clarified that their decision was made in light of the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict and recent terrorist attacks in the Pahalgam region. The heightened state of national security and widespread safety concerns, they said, prompted them to opt for a digital release instead.

Their official note read, "In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide. While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating this film with you in theaters, the spirit of the nation comes first. JAI HIND."

Set in the spiritual heart of India, Varanasi, Bhool Chuk Maaf is a quirky romantic comedy that blends small-town charm with a supernatural twist. Starring Rajkummar Rao as Ranjan and Wamiqa Gabbi as Titli, the story follows a man caught in a mysterious time loop on the eve of his wedding. As the loop resets to the day of the Haldi ceremony again and again, chaos and laughter ensue.

Directed by Karan Sharma and backed by a stellar supporting cast including Sanjay Mishra, Zakir Hussain, Raghubir Yadav, and Jay Thakkar, the film now aims to reach audiences worldwide via its OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 16.
