Renowned filmmaker, poet, journalist, and parliamentarian Pritish Nandy passed away at the age of 73. His son, Kushan Nandy, confirmed the news, leaving the Indian film and literary community in mourning. Born in 1951 in Bhagalpur, Bihar, Nandy’s illustrious career spanned several fields, including painting, journalism, filmmaking, and activism.
Nandy founded Pritish Nandy Communications in 1993, serving as its creative mentor and non-executive chairman. He was known for producing popular films like Chameli, Kaante, and Shaadi Ke Side Effects. His contribution to television content was equally significant, making him a household name. Beyond the screen, Nandy’s influence as a journalist was profound. As the managing editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, he transformed it into one of India’s most respected publications.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Nandy served as a member of parliament from 1998 to 2004, representing Shiv Sena in the Rajya Sabha. His dedication to various causes, including animal activism, earned him respect across political and social circles.
Several Bollywood celebrities expressed their grief over his demise. Actor Anupam Kher took to X (formerly Twitter), sharing heartfelt memories of his bond with Nandy. Kher described him as a fearless individual, a mentor, and a constant source of support during his early days in Mumbai. Reflecting on their friendship, Kher mentioned how Nandy once surprised him by featuring him on the cover of Filmfare and The Illustrated Weekly.
Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh also shared his condolences, calling Nandy’s passing a significant loss to the creative world. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Anil Kapoor, among others, paid their final tributes, acknowledging his contributions to the entertainment industry.
