There wasn't a bigger campaign and more hope for India to make a mark at the Oscars this year more than ever.
Unlike every year where we would only rely on our submission of the film for the International Feature Film category, this time around, we had not one but four Oscar hopefuls.
Chhello Show (The Last Film Show) for the International Feature Film category, All That Breathes in the Documentary Feature Film category, The Elephant Whisperers in the Documentary Short Film category, and of course a hope for multiple big nods for the mammoth sensation that is RRR'.
The full list of Oscar nominees is now out and it is a mixed bag of news for Indians. Both All That Breathes and The Elephant Whisperers scored a nomination in Documentary Feature Film and Documentary Short Film category respectively but Chello Show missed out in the International Feature Film category. When it comes to the sensation of RRR, the film didn't score any other nominations but as expected, the Golden Globe winning song, Naatu Naatu scored a nomination-
Irrespective of anything, it is indeed a momentous occasion as RRR becomes the first Indian film to score a Oscar nomination in the non International Feature Film category.
Meanwhile, acclaimed features like The Fabelmans, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Top Gun Maverick, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aftersun, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are being pitched as favourites in the Best Picture category. An Oscar nom for Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell and Austin Butler is more or less guaranteed in Best Actor category. Meanwhile, The Daniels, Steven Spielberg and James Cameron among others will be vying for the Best Director trophy, according to early predictions.
The Oscar ceremony will take place on 13 March 2023.
