Karan Johar reveals his dream cast of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

In a candid chat with Sania Mirza on Myntra’s Glam Stream, the filmmaker said that if the film were made in the modern era, Alia Bhatt would play Anjali, Ranveer Singh would be Rahul, and Ananya Panday would step into Tina’s role originally played by Rani Mukerji. He also playfully added that the role of Tina could easily go to Janhvi Kapoor or Sara Ali Khan, calling them part of the “younger nepo babies” generation.

Regarding nepotism, Karan Johar clarified that he has never cast anyone due to their famous parents' requests. I know they are nepo babies. I've seen them grow up in front of me. But none of their parents have ever called me. I have always been the one to call, he said. He even added that several actors have declined his offers in the past.

Karan remembers his father

During the conversation, Karan became emotional as he remembered his late father, Yash Johar, who significantly boosted his confidence as a filmmaker.

He thought I was the most handsome boy on the planet, and when 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' released, he thought I was James Cameron overnight. He used to tell people, ‘Mera beta bilkul director number 1 hai, Hindustan main kya, globally.’ I used to feel so awkward. He was my fan. I was obsessed with his obsession with me. He would spoil me, but my mother would discipline me, Karan said.

About Dharma Productions

Dharma Productions' journey began in 1980 with Dostana, but faced challenges with films like Duniya and Agneepath. The release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, marked a turning point, revitalizing the production house. This success led to further blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, solidifying Dharma Productions' position as a leading Bollywood banner, now valued at nearly Rs 2,000 crore.

Karan Johar’s career

Karan Johar has several diverse films planned for Dharma Productions, including Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, a romantic drama starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, set for early 2026. Additionally, he's producing Naagzilla, a fantasy-comedy starring Kartik Aaryan, scheduled for August 2026.
