Actress Kangana Ranaut, who started the nepotism debate by labelling filmmaker Karan Johar as its "flag bearer" during his chat show, says she found the open letter by her "Rangoon" co-star Saif Ali Khan on the subject "disturbing".

A day after Saif shared his views on the debate, Kangana wrote an open letter, published on Saturday in the Mid-day tabloid.

"While I enjoyed some of the perspectives on this subject, I did find a few disturbing ones. This morning, I woke up to one such open letter, written by Saif Ali Khan," she wrote.

"The last time I was deeply pained and upset about this issue was when Karan Johar wrote a blog on it, and even once declared in an interview that there are many criteria for excelling in film business. Talent is not one of them."

Kangana said: "I don't know if he was being misinformed, or simply nave, but to discredit the likes of Dilip Kumar, K. Asif, Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt, and many more, whose talent and exceptional abilities have formed the spine of our contemporary film business, is absolutely bizarre."

Before addressing her letter to "Dear friend Saif", she wrote: "My request is that people must not misconstrue this and pit us against each other. This is just a healthy exchange of ideas, and not a clash between individuals."

"In your letter you mentioned that, 'I apologised to Kangana, and I don't owe anyone any explanation, and this issue is over.' But this is not my issue alone."

She said nepotism, "on many levels, fails the test of objectivity and rationale. I have acquired these values from the ones who have found great success and discovered a higher truth, much before me. These values are in the public domain, and no one has a copyright on them."

"So, we owe an explanation to everyone who either owns, or wants to own these values. Like I said, we are the ones who will shape the future of the coming generations."

Referring to another part of Saif's letter, she wrote: "You talked about the relationship between genetics and star kids, where you emphasised on nepotism being an investment on tried and tested genes...I fail to understand how you can compare genetically hybrid racehorses to artistes!"

Are you implying that artistic skills, hard-work, experience, concentration spans, enthusiasm, eagerness, discipline and love, can be inherited through family genes? she asked.

"If your point was true, I would be a farmer back home. I wonder which gene from my gene-pool gave me the keenness to observe my environment, and the dedication to interpret and pursue my interests."

She also said: "You also spoke of eugenics -- which means controlled breeding of the human race. So far, I believe that the human race hasn't found the DNA that can pass on greatness and excellence.

"If it had, we would've loved to repeat the greatness of Einstein, Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Vivekananda, Stephen Hawking, Terence Tao, Daniel Day-Lewis, or Gerhard Richter."

The subtext of all her discussions on this subject has been to encourage outsiders to take the path less travelled, she said in her open letter in mid-day.

"If you don't find acceptance in the mainstream, go off beat -- there are so many ways of doing the same thing," she wrote.

I'm not a Kangna fan but I do admire her courage. She has stood her ground and refuses to budge in this matter, despite KJo and his stooges taking digs. Never liked Kjo or his lame movies. He's just a loud mouth who has some real illusions about himself. Varun Dhawan is a wannabe who I can't take seriously and Saif? lol he's far from classy. Being well read isn't a reflection of class. I'm not going to bother with him.

Good on you, Kangna. Lagi raho and don't back down. Clearly you've spoken the truth and riled up the silver spoon lot!

Whenever kjo open his mouth he always landed himself in trouble. And varun just following his mentor path to stay in the industry. But i cant expect this from saif. Such a dignified men like saif has fell in this dirty politics and now trying to justifying his statement. Why you people can't put this thing nepotisim behind and simply apolozise.

Kudos to you Kangana for calling a spade - a spade and, for not backing down to those who believe in nepotism and practice discrimination based on nepotism.

Saif Ali Khan is a snob who would have never made it in the film industry if it were not for his mother, and she got in because of the Tagore tag. Saif got a National Award simply because his mother was on the selection committee.

I am not her fan. But I commend her for her guts. And never backing away from groupies bullying which is what it's starting to look like. The queen bee( in this case Kjo) says something and the other Chellas follow. It's unfortunate that a well read person like Saif fell for this and now is trying to justify that statement. Just apologize and back away..
The hard fact is that there is neopitism in every walk of life. It's the unfortunate fact. But giving equal opportunity to people without the privileged 'background' is one way to balance this.
I have yet to see Kjo give such opportunities to newbies!

I have spoken about this topic for far to long now I just want this topic to end.
But I am glad Kangana brought this topic forward she has become my new favourite star

Kangna's answer was bang on .. The open letter is so logical and makes so much sense .. all the over-privileged dumb star kids are trying to save their asses and making fun of themselves.

I am not her fan, but I admire Kangana for having the guts to put the BW insider bully gang in thier place! All of them are there coz of thier family, not coz they just got there by sheer hard work. Privileged jerks who think they can harass someone who's a BW outsider! Sorry boys, times are changing! You made yourself look bad and look like unclassy bullies all by yourself with no help from Chudiya, Kangana or Kundan Ka haar! Shame on you and good for you Kangana! At least someone in BW has the guts to tell it like it is!! It's time BW learnt to respect real talent!!

Because despite ALL thier attempts the real superstars are still BW outsiders! At least the ones people take seriously! And the real critically aclaimed actors are also outsiders! Goes to show you can't "breed" talent! Are you getting this Nawaab Sahaab? Didn't expect this from you! Disappointed!

Good on you KR!

Saif Ali Khan and the rest of the privileged bimbos thought they could ridicule Kangana because she comes from an average background and she's a woman! The world is changing, privileged bimbos - wake up and smell the coffee - stop bashing up a lone woman and stop thinking you are so high and mighty that no one can stand up to you.

Hats off to Kangana for speaking her mind, and not being bullied by these have-it-alls who think they rule the world.

May God bless you Kangana, and may God watch over you and your family always!
