The much-anticipated teaser of Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, has taken the internet by storm. Marking Fawad’s return to Hindi cinema after several years, the teaser has generated massive buzz among fans who have long awaited his comeback. However, while admirers are celebrating the actor’s re-entry into Bollywood, a growing number of voices from the industry and political circles have sparked a fierce debate, calling the move controversial.

Leading the criticism is veteran filmmaker and Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) President, Ashoke Pandit. In a recent conversation with IANS, Pandit expressed strong objections to Fawad Khan's casting in the film. He stated that the collaboration with Pakistani actors goes against the sentiment of the nation, especially in light of the existing ban placed after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.

Calling the inclusion of Pakistani artists “disrespectful to national interests,” Pandit emphasized that no prominent celebrity from Pakistan has ever condemned terrorist attacks on Indian soil. He firmly believes that art cannot be separated from patriotism, especially when emotions surrounding national security are at stake.

Pandit also warned that this decision could provoke a strong public reaction, hinting at potential protests and backlash from citizens. He reiterated that following the Pulwama attack, major film bodies like FWICE, IMPA, and WIFPA had agreed on a blanket ban against Pakistani actors and technicians in India. According to him, any attempt to bypass that agreement is not just hurtful but also unpatriotic.

While the controversy unfolds, Abir Gulaal continues to remain in the spotlight. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Manish Malhotra in his debut venture, the film promises to be a romantic thriller set against a rich cultural backdrop. With Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor sharing the screen for the first time, the film has already piqued the interest of the audience. The film is all set to hit the thaetres on 9th May, 2025.
