In an epic march of sorts, over 20,000 farmers from Nashik started marching on foot last Tuesday and reached Mumbai's Azad Maidan late last night.
The farmers, who have been demanding an unconditional waiver of loans as well as electricity bills, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, including an announcement of minimum support price for agriculture produce and a pension scheme for farmers., were thoughtful enough to commence their protest late in the night, so as to not inconvenience commuters in the morning rush hours, especially students who will be appearing for their Std 10th exams which started today.
The farmers are demanding the load waiver because of their crops being destroyed in abundance due to unpredictable weather and poor rainfall.
We spoke to a few actors from the industry and asked them for their opinion on the Farmer March and here's what they said.
The Indian farmers are very hardworking. I feel they are very honest. They are children of the nature. As they work in the fields from morning till evening, the scorching heat of the sun, the cold winter winds and the heavy rain cannot stop them from doing their work outside the house. Government should do the best for their help.
https://twitter.com/vivekdahiya08/status/973087254779498497India is an agricultural country. Majority of its population lives in villages and depend on agriculture. The Indian farmer is the backbone of the society. His importance in the economy of the country cannot be over-emphasized. Government should give priority to their demand and help them the best.
https://twitter.com/gautam_rode/status/973129734774247425Government should help them with money, implements and good seeds. There should be good arrangements for irrigation also. It's always a matter of great pleasure to support and stand with the Indian farmer.
https://twitter.com/rohan4747/status/973096338220044288India is a an agricultural country. More than half of its population lives in villages. People work as farmers. But it is pity that our farmer lives in poverty though he is the backbone of our country. He works hard and gets little to eat. If today, they are here for a need, they should be helped in anyway.
https://twitter.com/mishalraheja/status/973139092434276353Well, we hope and pray that the government takes strong measures to help the farmers in the best way possible.
