Dhanush to star as APJ Abdul Kalam in new biopic announced at Cannes 2025

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, a major cinematic announcement created ripples—actor Dhanush will step into the role of India’s former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in a biopic directed by Om Raut. The film has officially entered production and aims to capture the life of the 'Missile Man of India,' whose journey from Rameswaram to Rashtrapati Bhavan remains etched in the country's collective memory.

The project is backed by Abhishek Agarwal Arts, known for The Kashmir Files, in collaboration with Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series. Dhanush, taking on the titular role, will be supported by a screenplay written by Saiwyn Quadras, who previously penned Neerja, Parmanu, and Maidaan. This combination of talents underlines the ambition behind the film.

Director Om Raut reflected on the weight of the subject: “In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was a man who was known for power of education, excellence and indigenous innovation,” he said. “To bring his story to screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. It’s the most important experience of my life.”

Dr. Kalam’s legacy remains deeply influential, especially among the youth of India and the Global South. The film will trace his personal and professional evolution—growing up in a modest background in Rameswaram, working as a scientist at ISRO and DRDO, and eventually becoming India’s 11th President.

Producer Abhishek Agarwal shared how significant this project is for his team: “We are excited to bring the epic life of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to the big screen. This is one of Indian cinema’s most prestigious projects and will be a grand spectacle on a global scale,” he noted. “We are privileged to tell this story—it’s an emotional moment.”

Bhushan Kumar, who earlier collaborated with Raut on Tanhaji and Adipurush, highlighted the universal appeal of Kalam’s story. “This is more than just a film—it’s a tribute to a man who showed us how dreams, dedication, and humility can shape a nation’s future,” Kumar remarked.

The film sets high expectations, not just as a cinematic work, but as a reflection of a life that continues to inspire generations.
