Cotton ready to shine as evening wear

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS) In the world of fashion, cotton is predominantly associated with saris and salwaar kameez suits, but many designers are now experimenting with this soft and comfortable fabric to give it a completely new look - as evening wear.

Designer Anju Modi maintains that cotton makes for a designer's paradise and looks good on everybody.

'Cotton vibrates with energy and one can never go wrong with the fabric.

Designer Meera Ali said: 'Cotton is no more a day thing. It has become glamorous and colourful. Using bright colours with some embroidery or teaming long kurtas with cotton skirts can give your evening wear a different look.'

Meera's husband, director and designer Muzaffar Ali, candidly confessed to being a cotton lover.

'For men, cotton kurtas, trousers and shirts are passe now. They are more comfortable in experimenting with cotton achkans and dhotis that give them a complete makeover.

Designer Kavita Bhatia favours mixing cotton with other fabrics.

'Mixing cotton with viscous or silk with cotton produces a wonderful combination that is smart, elegant and beautiful at the same time,' she added.

This experimentation was a strict no-no for designer Raghavendra Rathore.

'Experimentation with cotton needs to happen at the textile level and not at the designer level,' he maintained.

Designer Ashish Soni, who is known for his cotton garments, said the fabric could never go out of fashion.

'It is so elegant and versatile. It's all about working with it in a very innovative and appealing manner,' Soni contended.
