The Romanian film was set in communist Romania and narrates the story of a young girl who wants to undergo an abortion, but has to face complications in a repressed regime where abortion is illegal. But "Happy Ending" does not involve any such plot. Perhaps, the only similarity between the two movies may lie in the styling. It has a completely different storyline and can be called an alternate 90 minute film. It's something completely different than what Anurag Kashyap has attempted till date.
Anurag said, "Though the film is called Happy Ending, it's actually a very sad film. It's written specially for Kalki. The film is about a girl's journey. It's an experimental and edgy 90-minute film situated in a four-day time span. I would say it's in the genre of Christian Mungui's Romanian film, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days."
The Romanian film was shown in Mumbai last year at the MAMI Film Festival. Although the film is based on a bold theme, Anurag has vowed to keep nudity out of it, "I'm totally against nudity, and I don't think Indian audiences are ready for female nudity. " Anurag saw "The Reader," and the sex and nudity in the film made him cry. "We've a long way to go before we achieve that level of sexual maturity." The cast and crew apart from Kalki Koechlin is yet to be finalized.
