Aamir Khan has been a part of Bollywood for over four decades, delivering several blockbusters and cult classics. However, not every film journey has been smooth for the superstar. In a recent chat with Too Filmy, Aamir shared that Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was the most difficult film of his career. He called the experience “torturous” and revealed that the film had to be shot twice.
Aamir recalled, “Bohot torture hua. Voh film do dafa bani.” He explained that the team initially shot the film in beautiful locations like Kodai and Ooty for about 60-70 days. However, after wrapping up the shoot, director Mansoor Khan realized that something was not working. “Pehli dafa jab bani, we shot in Kodai and Ooty. We shot for 60-70 days. Shoot ended, and I was shooting for another film. Mansoor then called me two months later and said, ‘There is a problem, Devika ka character work nahi ho raha hai’.”
At that time, Devika was not played by Pooja Bedi. “Us waqt Devika ka character koi aur play kar raha tha, Pooja Bedi nahi thi. Mansoor ne khud accept kiya ki galti unki thi, galat casting ho gayi thi. Jo actress cast ki thi, voh bohot achi insaan thi, but film ko jo chhoti si snobbish ladki chahiye thi, voh feel nahi aa raha tha. So he said that we would have to shoot all the scenes again.”
Aamir revealed that almost 40% of the film had scenes between him and Devika’s character, another 40% with Ayesha Jhulka, and the remaining with supporting actors. He further shared, “Aakhri 20% jo film ka tha, usme 4 actors the—main unka naam nahi loonga—par woh bohot badtameez the. Humein bohot takleef de rahe the. Maine Mansoor se bola, ‘Agar hum 80% film dobara bana rahe hain, to yeh 20% bhi kar lete hain’. To humne puri film dobara shoot ki. Pura cast badal gaya, sirf main, meri bicycle aur Mamik nahi badle. Bohot takleef hui film banane mein.”
Despite all these challenges, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar finally released in 1992 and became a massive hit. Directed by Mansoor Khan, it starred Aamir, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Mamik Singh, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Over time, the film became a cult classic, loved for its emotional depth and inspiring storyline.
After the lukewarm response to Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir is gearing up for his next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, alongside Genelia Deshmukh. Talking about it with Hollywood Reporter India, he said, “Well, it’s a beautiful story. Actually, the easiest way I can describe it is that Taare Zameen Par is a very emotional film that makes you cry, whereas Sitaare Zameen Par makes you laugh. It’s a humorous film. The theme is similar—of people with different abilities, different intelligence, or different challenges—but this time, it leans more towards humour rather than emotions.”
Fans are now eagerly waiting for Aamir’s return to the big screen, hoping for a heartwarming and entertaining experience.
