It was her responsibility to keep the premises clean and she often took Keshubhai with her. As a little boy he used to quietly observe the experts when they scrutinized and examined the diamonds. He had thus become an expert himself. He drinks his tea by blowing lightly into the cup before taking a sip. He is always dressed in a dhoti and kurta, wears a suit only when he was compelled to wear it for a meeting. His clothes have to taken out by his wife Ketki and handed over to him. He loves his mother and wife equally. Keshubhai is a vegetarian. Every Sunday he has his friends over for lunch. Apart from his four close friends he always has others from the neighborhood savoring the lunch cooked by his daughters-in-law. The lunch is enjoyed amidst much boisterous chatter. The bahus quietly swear under their breath as they feel that they don’t even get Sundays to themselves and the house becomes an old age home on Sundays. Keshubhai reads abd writes only Gujarati. His wife Ketki, on the other hand, speaks in other langaues and reads and writes English. This was because her father was railway officer and was posted in different cities. Keshubhai respects his wife’s intelligence and he always shows Ketki the papers and documents he has to sign and takes her opinion. He is cheerful and jovial and loves to wisecrack and laugh at himself. This facet, sadly, is destined to become a cruel joke when the true character of his sons comes to fore.

Sachin Deshmukh{Head of the Deshmukh Family} Born to a farmer in the Bhandara district’s Bhugaon village, Sachin Deshmukh is a self-made gentleman who has come up in life after crossing umpteen hurdles. From a mere clerk he rises to the position of a Bank Manager and he attributes the rise to his wife’s good luck. He is devoted to his job and loves his wife very much. He is a painter in his leisure time. Though his paintings are praiseworthy he does not take it up as a serious hobby. He loves his wife so much that he does not let the wife go home to see her mother. He calls his mother-in-law home instead. Every day he buys ‘gajra’ for his wife and adorns her hair with it himself. From breakfast to dinner they eat together and in the afternoon they talk to each other before eating.

Rasili Parikh {Aatish Parikh's Wife} Irritable nature and a negative approach to everything has made her an unhappy woman who makes others unhappy, too. She is depressed that she has two daughters and no son. She finds fault with her daughters and remains dissatisfied all the time. Ketki loves one of her daughters, Nandini, very much.

{Keshibhai's wife} Cheerful and efficient, Ketki is very devoted to her husband. She never interferes in his work. If Keshubhai says something wrong in front of other people, she remains silent and later when she is alone with him, she points out his mistake to him gently. Keshubhai never disagrees with her. Ketki is completely in charge of the house. Ketki loves simplicity but she never fails to dress up before her husband returns home every evening. Blessed with two sons, Ketki still yearns for a daughter. So she never tires of pampering Nandini, Aatish Patel’s daughter, who lives nearby.

Manda Deshmukh{Sachin Deshmukh's wife} Born in an average peasant family, Manda has grown up under the care of her mother Kalavanti who was widowed when Manda was eight years old. Manda is very simple, God-fearing, compassionate, loving and a complete home bird. Beyond her husband and her family she knows nothing and has no desire to know either. Unlike other women of her social status she does not go out even for shopping or a social gathering without her husband’s permission. She does not even know how to deposit cash or cheque in a bank or pay a bill. Her constant answer when asked why she has no interest in the life beyond her home is: “Why do I need to know? You (Sachin) are there to know and understand all that.” She cannot exist without her husband and she is least bothered when her friends joke about it to her.

Devkiben{Kritika's mother} She is clever, cunning, and extravagant, has her eye on Keshubhai’s wealth. She has taught Kritika to use her beauty and sensuous appeal to her advantage. Keshu does not like her but he cannot stop her from inviting herself to stay in her daughter’s sasural and manipulating her daughter in her own way. She gives Kritika lessons in playing the game of chess in her life.

{Aatish Parikh's Daughter} Nandini is the heroine of the story. Tall, slim and supremely beautiful – at heart and in looks. She is sensitive, thoughtful and intelligent. She is unselfish and thinks about the welfare of her family and dear ones. To contribute to the family’s income she does a course in flower arrangement. In the future course of the story she uses this art and skill to help Ketki to stand on her feet. She addresses Keshu as Papu and Ketki as mamma. Nandini is the elder of the two daughters of Atish Parekh and like a son to him. She and Shantanu are made for each other and they make a fine couple.

Kritika Sanghvi{Mehul Sanghvi's wife} Incredibly beautiful, educated, smart manipulative, cunning, Kritika knows how to use her sex appeal to her advantage. She has made Mehul almost into a goat who tamely listens to her. She knows how smart the younger son Ketan is, so she remains forever alert when he is around. Ketki had seen Kritika at a wedding and had been impressed by her beauty. She had chosen her for Mehul knowing that she was the daughter of a worker in the factory who was no more. He has married average-looking Heena only because she will be inheriting all her father’s wealth. Faizaan is not ashamed of his self-motivated decisions and makes no secret of his intention to do only that job or work which will give him ample rewards. It does not bother him if he is hurting or harming anybody in the process of gaining his rewards. Waqar and Jannat have no idea how Faizaan became such a self-seeking man.

His great joy is taking his begum for a drive in his own big car. He loves good food and he knows where good cuisine is available in the entire city. It gives him immense happiness to give his friends treats in good restaurants. What’s more he enjoys cooking and is a good cook. He talks to his wife in Avadhi language.
